Chapter 2: The Estate, The Coins, and a Promise.

Thornfield Estate looked like it had been punished too.

The gate hung crooked on one hinge. Weeds had taken over what used to be a garden.

Half the roof tiles were missing, like something had taken bites out of it over the years.

’Cozy,’ Lucien thought. ’Very "abandoned haunted house" energy. Love it.’

Aurelia stepped down from the carriage first, eyes sweeping the property like she was assessing a battlefield.

"Its defensible," she said. "Well barely."

"Thats some high praise you’re giving," Lucien said.

Seraphina covered her mouth, staring up at the sagging roofline. "Is that... moss? On the inside wall?"

"It adds character," Lucien said. "Rustic charm. Very trendy this season."

Evelisse pushed past both of them toward the front door, wings tucked tight. "It’s a shack," she said flatly.

"Just say it’s a shack and call it for what it is."

"It’s a shack," Lucien agreed. "A shack with potential."

She shot him a look like she couldn’t decide whether to be annoyed or impressed he’d just agreed with her. She settled on annoyed. Safer choice.

---

They spent the next two hours cleaning.

Aurelia hauled furniture like it weighed nothing, which — given the state of her mana core — was probably pure stubbornness rather than actual strength.

Seraphina scrubbed the kitchen with a focus that suggested she’d never been allowed to do something so simple and menial before, and didn’t hate it.

Evelisse swept cobwebs out of corners with more violence than the task strictly required, muttering the whole time about spiders, dust, and "stupid drafty spider palace."

Lucien mostly directed traffic and fixed the door hinge with a borrowed tool kit, which turned out to be one of the few practical skills his past life had actually left him with.

By evening, the place looked less like a crime scene and more like a home somebody had simply forgotten to love.

They sat around the one table sturdy enough to hold weight. Lucien laid out the household ledger — such as it was.

He counted the coins twice, just to be sure the number wasn’t lying to him.

"Twelve gold," he said.

"Give or take."

Silence.

"Total?" Seraphina asked carefully.

"Total," Lucien confirmed.

"We are, financially speaking, one bad week away from selling the furniture we just cleaned."

Aurelia didn’t blink.

"I’ve survived on less."

"Comforting," Lucien said.

"Terrifying, but comforting."

Evelisse crossed her arms. "So what, we just starve elegantly?"

"No," Lucien said.

"We figure it out. Together."

That word landed heavier than he meant it to.

He looked at each of them — Aurelia’s guarded stillness, Seraphina’s quiet flinch like she expected the sentence to end in blame, Evelisse’s practiced indifference that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

"Look," he said. "None of us chose this marriage. I know that. You got sold off to a family reject, and I got handed three wives like a consolation prize for having a garbage bloodline. That’s the deal we got dealt."

No one argued. That was answer enough.

"But we’re stuck with each other," he continued.

"Soul contract, remember? So I’d rather we’re stuck together ’well’ than stuck together miserable. You’re my wives. Not hostages, not political furniture. I’ll take care of you — all three of you — as best I can. And however long it takes, I’d like us to actually know each other. Trust each other. Build something real out of whatever this is."

Aurelia studied him for a long moment, like she was checking his words for hidden blades.

"That’s a soldier’s promise," she said finally.

"Simple. No decoration."

"I contain no decoration," Lucien said. "It’s a design flaw."

The corner of her mouth almost moved.

Seraphina’s eyes were suspiciously bright. "No one’s ever promised me anything before," she said softly. "Not... like that."

"Well," Lucien said, "get used to it. I’m apparently very fond of you three now."

Evelisse rolled her eyes, arms still crossed, wings twitching.

"Don’t expect me to fall for a nice speech," she muttered. Then, quieter, almost too quiet to catch, "...But thank you. I guess."

’Progress,’ Lucien thought. ’Glacial. But progress is progress.’

The room fell silent again, the weight of their shared past and uncertain future hanging heavily in the air.

Yet, there was a spark now, a glimmer of hope that hadn’t been there before.

They were a long way from being a family, but they had taken the first step.

Lucien’s gaze drifted from one wife to another, taking in their faces, committing them to memory.

He felt a stirring within him, a desire to protect, to cherish, to know them in a way that went beyond words.

Evelisse, her cheeks flushed from remembering that this was their wedding night and as per Demon customs and the demon marriage contract they had to consumate, she was the first to look away, her gaze falling to the table.

"It’s late," she said softly. "We should... we should retire."

Seraphina nodded, pushing her chair back while blushing too.

"Yes. Goodnight, Lucien."

Aurelia echoed her, acting unbothered

"Goodnight."

Lucien stood as they left the table, watching as they disappeared into the manor, each one moving with a newfound purpose.

He took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest.

It was time to consummate their marriage as the Demon ceremony required, to finalize the bond between them.

Lucien took a deep breath, steeling himself for what was to come.

---

Night settled over the estate.

There was only three real bedrooms worth sleeping in — the rest still needed work — and an unspoken, slightly terrifying understanding of what "consummating the marriage" was going to involve. Hence three rooms were fine.

Aurelia went first.

She didn’t say much walking into the room. She rarely did. But something in the set of her shoulders had shifted — not fear.

Aurelia didn’t seem to know how to do fear, but something quieter. Uncertain. A war hero who’d never once had to fight this particular battle.

He knocked gently on her door, the soft sound echoing in the quiet manor.

"Come in," Aurelia’s voice called, steady and confident.

Lucien pushed open the door, the warm glow of the lanterns spilling into the room. He took a moment to appreciate the space, clean and simple, with a large four-poster bed dominating the center.

Aurelia lay on the edge, her short red hair a wild tangle against the pillows, eyes fixed on him as he approached.

Her body was a study in power defined abs, thick thighs that pressed together even at rest, a generous chest and a rounded backside that spoke of both strength and sensuality.

Lucien’s lips twitched into a sarcastic smirk. "Ready to do your duty as first wife?" he asked, voice low and curious.

Aurelia’s jaw tightened, then softened as she met his stare.

"Do not hesitate, you are my husband now, I will take my duty as your first wife seriously as we are stuck together. So let’s make this count."

She shifted, the fabric of her shift rustling against her thighs, and reached for the ties at her shoulders.

Lucien let out a soft, sarcastic huff, though a tender smile played on his lips.

"Who said I was hesitating, you stubborn warrior? I was simply admiring the view."

"Close the door, husband," she said, her voice husky, drawing him in.

He obeyed, the soft click echoing in the sudden silence. Aurelia’s gaze never wavered as he moved closer, her expression a mix of anticipation and dominance.

"You’re very... forward," Lucien observed, a hint of a smirk playing on his lips.

Aurelia smirked back, a flash of teeth in the dim light.

"What, you thought I’d wait for you to make the first move?"

Lucien chuckled, a low, rich sound.

"Perhaps. But I suppose that’s part of your charm, isn’t it? Straight to the point."

She shrugged, a ripple of movement that drew his attention to the curves of her body, barely concealed by the thin nightdress.

"I don’t see the point in playing games when we both know what’s about to happen."

Lucien’s eyes flickered down, taking in the sight of her ample breasts straining against the fabric, the subtle swell of her hips.

"Indeed, especially since my wife is so beautiful." he agreed, his voice dropping down.

He stepped closer, his long black hair brushing against his shoulders as he leaned in, his lips meeting hers in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of longing and passion.

Aurelia let out a short, breathy laugh. "Flattery won’t win you points, but I’ll take it."

She pulled him closer, her hands gripping his shoulders, and pressed her lips to his.

Their kiss began slow, deep, and exploratory—Lucien’s tongue sliding against hers, while she responded with equal fervor, her mouth demanding and hungry.

He hovered over her, his frame casting a shadow over her scarlet hair.

"You’re so serious about everything, Aurelia," he whispered against her skin.

"Just for tonight, let me take care of you."
