Chapter 40: A Bed Big Enough for Four and built to Survive a War!?

’Borin did good work on the estate.’

’Might as well check in, see if there’s anything else worth adding, and ask about expanding the master bedroom while I’m there.’

He headed off toward Blackstone Renovations, weaving through the busy street with no idea what was waiting for him at the estate.

---

Borin looked up from his blueprints the moment Lucien walked in.

"Back again lad," the dwarf said, setting his pen down.

"At this rate I should just give you your own desk with how often you came within the last week."

"I might actually take you up on that, Borin."

"What’s it this time? More roof? Another wing?"

"No, master bedroom expansion," Lucien said. "I want it bigger, a lot bigger."

Borin raised an eyebrow, already reaching for a fresh set of blueprints. "How much bigger are we talking?"

"Big Enough for me and my wives with a larger sleeping area, room for a massive bed, oh and better wardrobe space. More floor space overall. Maybe a small sitting area, if it fits. Improved heating array, better soundproofing." Lucien paused.

"And reinforce the structure, it’s going to be handling more regular weight than a standard bedroom."

Borin’s pen slowed. "...Regular weight."

"It’s going to accommodate four people," Lucien said.

"Four people, you said you and you wife only."

"Wives not wife, Borin."

"Lucky lad, having 3 wives, don’t know how you handle them, I can’t even handle having one, that too a one demon wife and you have three."

"It can’t be that bad."

"Uh-huh, you have no clue."

"So only four people, right?"

"Yeah it’s a family bedroom."

"Of course it is." Borin’s mustache twitched with the effort of not grinning outright. "Well, lucky for you, this estate’s original architecture was built with expansion in mind, noble houses back then liked flexible floor plans. Won’t be hard to knock through the adjoining wall."

---

He sketched out a rough plan as he talked, thinking aloud.

"Reinforce the floor first, given the added weight," he said. "Add a few more mana lamps, since a bigger room needs better lighting. Larger wardrobe, obviously. I’d suggest a small private balcony too, if you’ve got the wall space, nice touch for a master suite. And I’ll widen the bathroom connection while we’re at it, save you walking the long way around."

"Sounds good," Lucien said. "Privacy enchantments too, if you can manage it."

Borin snorted. "Figured you’d ask for that eventually."

He tallied the total, and named a figure that made Lucien blink slightly, 320 gold, before paying it without complaint.

Borin raised an eyebrow at the speed of the payment. "You’re spending money rather freely these days compared to the first time you came here."

"I’m investing in the future," Lucien said.

"That’s one way to describe it, but don’t invest to much or one day you’ll have more kids than you can handle"

"Sounds lie you’ve experienced that," Lucien smiled and said.

"No comments there lad,"

---

"One more thing," Lucien said, as Borin filed the payment away. "Do you sell furniture?"

Borin shook his head. "Renovations, construction, enchantment work. Furniture’s not really our line."

"I need a bed, a big one."

Borin paused mid-motion.

Then the knowing smile crept back in. "How large are we talking?"

"Large enough for four or five people."

Borin looked at him. Then at the payment receipt still sitting on the counter. Then back at him.

"You really are investing in the future."

"Why does everyone keep saying that like it means something?"

Borin just laughed and gave him directions down the street.

"Moonstone Furnishings, tall building, can’t miss it. They stock for every race on the continent, you’ll find what you’re after."

---

Moonstone Furnishings turned out to be exactly as advertised, an elegant, multi-story building with a facade that looked more like a small palace than a furniture shop.

Inside, sections branched off by clientele: standard humanoid furniture on one floor, an entire wing dedicated to oversized Asura pieces, a section for beastkin with prominent signage reading ’Tail Clearance Included’ , another for winged races boasting ’Retractable Wing Supports’.

’Apparently furniture is more complicated than I thought,’ Lucien mused, passing a display labeled ’Asura King Bed - Reinforced Heavenly Iron Frame’, clearly built to survive a small war.

A female demon staff member approached, professional smile in place. "Welcome to Moonstone. What can I help you find today?"

"A bed," Lucien said. "Large enough for four or five adults."

She paused, blinking once, then recovered smoothly, gesturing him toward a private section deeper in the store.

"This way, please."

---

The bed she showed him was, in a word, absurd.

Grand Family Bed

4.5m wide × 3.5m long

Reinforced enchanted wood frame

Self-adjusting mattress

Temperature regulation

Minor fatigue-recovery enchantment

Rated for high-rank demon durability

"Comfortably accommodates five adults," she said, running a hand along the frame.

"...That’s actually cheaper than I expected," Lucien admitted, checking the price tag.

100 gold.

"Beds like this are popular among larger demon households," she explained.

"Some races are simply too large for standard sizing. Wealthy families with big households often prefer them as well." She took a brief pause and continued.

"And certain races like succubi, incubi, etc tend to favor them for... other reasons."

Her gaze drifted over him then height, the physique visible even through his clothing, the faint edge of a marriage tattoo peeking above his collar.

Her cheeks colored slightly.

"A bed like this is usually purchased by larger families," she said, voice a touch higher than before.

"Though I suppose some customers simply have ambitious sleeping arrangements."

Lucien caught the implication easily and let his smile answer for him. "We’re a fairly ambitious family."

She went fully pink, clearing her throat and busying herself with the order form. "R-right. I’ll just get this processed for you."

---

He paid, and on impulse, decided to actually test the storage ring properly for the first time.

He focused, willing the bed toward the ring’s internal space while wrapping it in his mana and touching the frame.

WHOOSH.

Gone entirely. The massive frame simply vanished into nothing, leaving empty floor where it had stood a second earlier.

Lucien stared at his own hand.

’That was ridiculously convenient.’

He tested it further, mentally storing a few smaller display items just out of curiosity before politely declining to purchase them, grinning the entire time.

’Best three hundred gold I’ve ever spent. Furniture, weapons, building materials, monster parts, ingredients, I could carry an entire caravan’s worth of supplies and nobody would ever know.’

---

He left the store considerably lighter in coin, considerably richer in furniture, and pulled out his phone as he walked toward the street to hail a carriage.

Evelisse: Where are you?

Lucien: Shopping.

Evelisse: For what?

He glanced at the ring on his finger, smiling to himself.

Lucien: You’ll see.

Evelisse: That sounds suspicious as hell, what did you get?

Lucien: It’s a surprise, so you’ll have to find out.

Evelisse: I don’t trust you.

He laughed, pocketing the phone, and remembered belatedly that dinner still needed a few more ingredients.

He detoured through a market stall long enough to gather what he needed, storing everything effortlessly into the ring, before finally hailing a carriage home.

’Master bedroom expansion done, enormous bed acquired for the three wives and me.

’Yeah,’ he thought, settling back against the seat as the city rolled by. ’This is definitely becoming a proper family.’

---

The carriage rolled up toward the estate, and Lucien’s easy smile faded the moment the property came into view.

A large, ornate carriage sat parked outside the front gate, polished black wood catching the fading light, a noble crest emblazoned across its door one he didn’t recognize on sight, but unmistakably powerful all the same.

Lucien’s stomach tightened.

’What’s this?’

’...We weren’t expecting guests.’
