100x Reward System: I am the son of ZEUS

Chapter 32: The First No

Sponsored

Here’s the grammar-corrected passage:

Silence stretched across the hillside as fog drifted between the ranks. One hundred pairs of eyes fixed on the young man with the golden eagle on his chest.

Ethan did not raise his voice.

"You asked a fair question," he said. "What if you say no."

He walked the line until he stood in front of the woman who had spoken. She was an auxiliary, late thirties, a scar across the jaw, and eyes too cold, with a gaze that had seen too many fronts and too few promotions.

"Name."

"Auxiliary Lira, sir."

"Lira. You have the right to refuse an order from a tesserarius. You do not have the right to refuse an order from the man who carries the eagle. This eagle.

That is the law of the empire you swore to. But laws are only words until someone makes them real."

He unclipped the golden eagle from his chest and held it out in one hand.

"Anyone who believes the rank does not belong to me may take it. Right here. Right now. No weapons, no magic from the mage until her runs are finished. Just strength. Take it from me, and your no will have power.

If you put me on the ground and keep the eagle, I will walk down this hill and never give another order. If I keep it, the conversation ends.

Who wants it?"

No one moved for three heartbeats.

Then Lira stepped forward.

George’s jaw tightened, knowing what could happen to his soldiers.

The Beta Miles muttered something under her breath to her medics. The mage, still running the slope, slowed just enough to watch.

Ethan smiled.

"Good."

He tossed the eagle to George. "Hold this, please. I guess this is the way."

Lira came in fast, low, the way a calm but wild veteran fights when she has nothing left to lose. Her first strike was a straight jab aimed at his throat.

Ethan turned his shoulder and let it slide past. The second came as a low kick toward his knee. He simply shifted his weight and took it on the shin. Pain flared, sharp and clean, but he ignored it.

On the third strike she closed the distance and drove an elbow toward his ribs. Ethan stepped inside the arc, caught her wrist with one hand, and twisted.

"Aaaa!!!" she moaned in pain.

Her balance broke as he turned her momentum against her and drove her into the wet ground, hard enough to knock the air from her lungs.

Before she could roll, his boot pinned her shoulder. A thin thread of blue lightning crawled from his palm to the mud beside her ear. The grass blackened. Smoke rose in a thin line.

"Still want the eagle?" he asked quietly.

Lira stared at the smoking ground, then at the white hair and the glowing eyes above her. Her chest heaved once, then twice.

"...No, sir."

Ethan stepped back and offered his hand. After a second, she met his blue eyes and took it. He pulled her up and nodded once. The strength in his grip was measured firmly — enough to show control, not enough to crush.

"Anyone else?"

No one answered. The glare he had seen among most of them was gone. A few cadets shifted their weight. An older immunis looked away. The Beta Miles kept her face blank, but her eyes tracked every movement.

Ethan took the eagle back from George and clipped it on. The metal settled against his chest with a familiar weight, and he couldn’t help but smile.

"Then we understand each other. Rank is not given by years. It is taken by results, and from this moment the results are mine. And yours."

The system window flickered at the edge of his vision.

Ethan dismissed it with a blink. Forty-eight hours. He already knew the clock had started the moment he accepted the eagle.

The mage staggered to a halt after her fiftieth run, breathing hard, hair plastered to her forehead, her sweat cutting clean lines through the dirt on her face. Ethan couldn’t help but look at her without pity.

"Your name, mage?"

"Mage Seris."

"Seris. Next time you are late, the number doubles. Understood?"

She straightened as best she could, pride warring with exhaustion across her features. "...Understood, Signifer."

"Good. George, form them up. We leave the hill at dusk. Night march. Full kit. Destination will be given on the move. Anyone who falls out answers to me personally."

George’s salute was sharper than it had been an hour earlier. The change was small, but it was there. The hesitation that had marked him on the resource sector road was now completely gone.

"Yes, sir."

Ethan turned away and looked down the foggy slope. One hundred soldiers. One mage. He smiled into the mist.

"Let’s begin."

Night swallowed the hillside by the time the column moved. Ethan walked at the front with George on his right and Seris half a step behind, still nursing bruised pride and aching legs, as Ethan had ordered her to walk instead of flying.

The system kept a quiet tally in the corner of his vision.

[Unit Cohesion: 41% → 47%]

Slow, but climbing.

Ethan set a steady pace, enough to keep the blood moving and the mind sharp. Fog clung low.

If I need to finish this mission, then they need an enemy to unite against.

Trees rose like darker shapes on either side of the trail. He had chosen the route carefully. Narrow ground with limited visibility. Easy to control if something went wrong. According to the escape routes Rick had shown them, he wanted to visit every single one where beasts were likely to come, and test their luck when they escaped.

So, two hours into the march, he raised a hand when he reached it. The column halted without the usual scatter of questions. That alone was progress.

He pointed to a shallow ridge ahead.

"Scouts reported a small group of half-beasts, half human and monster. One of the many clogs this sector is too lazy to clean, so here we are, to clean."

George’s eyes narrowed. "Orders?"

"We are the ones who will make sure this road is never dirtied again with their presence. Quiet if possible. Loud if necessary.

No survivors either way. Seris, you stay dark until I call for light. George, left flank. Beta Miles, rear security. Auxiliaries, keep the cadets tight. Move."

They moved.

[Unit Cohesion: 47% → 49%]

Ethan took the point himself as George peeled left with a dozen mixed veterans and cadets. The Beta Miles dropped back to watch the rear.

Lira stayed near the center of the auxiliaries, her earlier challenge already folded into the work at hand. Seris kept close enough to hear a quiet order but far enough that her presence would not light up the fog.

The patrol was where the half-beasts usually roamed, but they moved in a loose diamond along a game trail that crossed the ridge. There were actually men instead of half-beasts. Six men. Leather and light mail. Ethan knew who they were. They were men... from the revolutionary.

One carried a short horn on a strap. The tracker walked slightly ahead, head tilted, listening more than watching.

Ethan didn’t know what to do as he turned to his men, his thoughts running wild. He waited until the tracker was isolated by a stand of young pines. Then he closed the distance.

One precise thread of lightning through the base of the skull. The man dropped without a sound. His hand never reached the horn to call his men.

I have to, he told himself. If not, then it won’t be hard for them to point their fingers at him, and the main mission would fail.

The remaining five never saw the first three fall. George’s group hit them from the side. Blades found gaps.

One cadet froze when one of them turned toward him with a raised spear, seeing a man instead of a half-beast. Lira closed the gap, grabbed the cadet by the collar, and shoved him forward while her own short sword finished the last man.

When it was over, the fog smelled of ozone and blood.

Ethan stood over the bodies while the immunes worked. George walked toward him.

"Sir, these are..."

"Revolutionaries," Ethan replied.

George’s face broke into a wide smile. "Now I see why the golden eagle lies on your chest, sir. You didn’t tell us beforehand, thinking any one of us could be a spy... brilliant!"

Ethan gave a fake smile, nodding to George.

Seris stared at the thin trails of lightning still fading from his fingertips. No one had seen it but her.

"That... was not standard legion lightning," she said carefully.

"Yes," Ethan answered. "It was legion lightning — new tools. Remember the difference."

She did not argue. Her eyes stayed on the blackened marks in the dirt longer than necessary.

George approached, wiping his blade. "They will send more when these do not report."

"I am... counting on it." Ethan looked at the dark trees. "Tonight we buried six. Tomorrow they will start looking harder. That is when we decide who among these hundred is ready to do what most can’t."

A new window opened, red-edged.

Ethan looked at the bodies. Yes, he had completed the mission, but at what cost?
