This time Jiang Nan wasn’t refusing to help; he’d simply eaten way too much. He could only sprawl in the chair and watch her clean up.

In the end it was Meimei who fed him some digestive tablets, hailed a cab for him, and sent him back to his private villa.

Did this count as "joy turning into sorrow"?

-

For several days in a row, Dan Tingye didn’t show up again.

Meimei was already back to work as usual. Every day after work she would habitually walk to the parking lot to wait for him, but every time, just as she reached the lot, she’d get a text from him saying he was busy.

Counting the weekend, it had been almost a week since she’d seen him.

Was Tingye mad at her, so mad he didn’t even want to see her?

"Meimei, what nonsense are you imagining? Tingye runs such a huge group, of course he’s busy. He’s already working so hard, you can’t keep thinking about him like this."

Meimei once again walked into the parking lot, stood at her usual spot, lowered her head, tugged at her bangs, and muttered with her lips pursed.

She waited a few minutes, but still didn’t see Dan Tingye’s car pull in.

Her phone buzzed, and her heart instantly sank. Her pale fingers tapped open the message; sure enough, it was him saying he couldn’t make it again.

"So it really is that you made Tingye angry."

Meimei couldn’t help knocking herself lightly on the forehead. With her cheeks puffed out, she headed out of the parking lot.

Just as she turned around, a low‑key sports car slowly drove up behind her and stopped less than five meters away, quietly watching her figure.

Only when her figure disappeared from sight did the driver’s side window slowly lower, revealing Dan Tingye’s outrageously handsome face.

His deep black eyes fixed on her thin little figure, and the hand resting on the steering wheel suddenly tightened.

The moment he saw her turn around, he almost couldn’t stop himself from jumping out of the car, going up to pull her into his arms, and telling her he’d been right behind her all along.

But he didn’t. For the first time he realized just how afraid he was of seeing rejection in her eyes. He didn’t want her to be afraid of him—not even a little bit.

"Bang—"

Dan Tingye slammed his fist hard against the steering wheel, started the car, and drove out of the parking lot.

-

"Jiang Nan, where are you taking me?" As soon as Meimei walked out of the parking lot, she saw Jiang Nan waiting outside. The moment he saw her, he said nothing and just grabbed her, pulling her toward the car.

He stuffed her into the car, started it, and drove off.

Meimei clutched the seat belt, staring at him in surprise.

"You’ve been in low spirits the past few days, so I’m taking you out to relax a bit." Jiang Nan turned his head to glance at her, one hand on the steering wheel while the other flicked her little forehead.

"It’s been days. Every time I see you, your little brows are all scrunched up. Aren’t you afraid you’ll turn into an old lady?"

"I’m not, I just..." Meimei bit her lip. When she thought of Dan Tingye, the light in her eyes dimmed. "I’m just worried that in three months, if I don’t meet my dad’s expectations, he’ll take me away."

"What’s there to worry about? I’m here. If Mr. Bai insists on taking you away, I’ll cry and beg him to let you stay. And if that doesn’t work, I’ll just go with you. That way you at least won’t have to worry about being bored on your own."

Jiang Nan drove, casually comforting her as he spoke.

No one could tell whether he was joking or being serious.

"Jiang Nan, I’m fine. You don’t have to go out of your way to cheer me up. It’s getting late, I want to go home and read." Meimei smiled at him, then reached to unbuckle her seat belt.
