48 Hours a Day

Chapter 75: Welcome to the Mannheim Defense Line (17)

Zhang Heng had been lying on his knees for half an hour in the inexhaustible snow fields. He held the m28 in his hand and put the gun butt against his right shoulder. His fingers were slightly swollen. Even with his constant calm, he could not help but begin to wonder whether he would be able to complete today's training.

It was his seventy-ninth day in the world, long past his mandate, but because of the extra 24 hours, his stay in the snow was extended to one hundred and forty days, and now more than half the time has passed, but the good news is that it is not far from the end of the war.

In future generations, the Soviet winter war could be roughly divided into two periods of time according to the process. The first phase began on 30 November 1939, when the Soviet army launched a fierce attack on Finland in four directions, resulting in a wave of operations that ended in tragic defeat in other areas, with the exception of reaching their intended targets at the northern end of the front, and forced to halt the attack and continue to reinforce troops from within the country.

At that time, Finland had basically defeated the Soviet Union, particularly the main confrontation in the Karelia Gorge, the Soviet army had been unable to break through the Mannaheim line, which Finland had been painstakingly operating for more than a decade, and had invaded only 20 to 60 kilometres of deep security for the Finnish forces at a heavy cost because it had been unable to ascertain the defensive falsity of the Finnish army.

By January, however, the situation had begun to change sharply, when the Soviet army had established a north-western army in the Karelia isthmus and appointed Tiemushingo as its commander, who at the same time acted as the commander-in-chief of the front line, mobilizing the forces of two groups, a total of 21 infantry divisions and six tank brigades, and attacking the Mannaheim line of defence, when the Finnish side was understaffed, the scarcity of heavy weapons and the excessive depletion of ammunition came to light.

Recently, there have been more and more urgent reports on the front line, but for the time being it has nothing to do with Zhang Heng. During this period, he has experienced more than two dozen battles, big and small, almost every day, swimming on the edge of death. If it is not as easy as it was in World War I, even with his caution, he has hung several colors. One of the most dangerous grenades fell in front of him, but it is not known whether the lucky rabbit's foot between his waist played a role. Finally, the grenade did not explode and let Zhang Heng escape.

This is indeed the most dangerous round of games he has ever experienced, with many factors beyond his control on the battlefield, and even making all the right choices can still result in accidental death.

However, tremendous pressure also gave him unprecedented potential. Zhang Heng's skiing and shooting skills improved rapidly, especially the latter, which took less than a month to upgrade to LV1. At this rate, he may reach LV2 in another month.

Now that his sniper hit range has risen to 200 meters, he can basically guarantee a hit rate of more than 80%, and his most important advance is not yet range.

Simon has been helping Zhang Heng improve the sniper's overall qualities and battlefield sense of smell, which is why he is getting better and better.

The two of them are now engaged in observation training. Simon caught five skunks with a trap. This is a slender, rat-like animal. The girl marks them and releases them. Zhang Heng needs to kill three of them in order to complete the training.

This little thing, dressed in pure white fur, was very difficult to distinguish in the snow, and it was very mechanical. Half an hour later, Zhang Heng only found and shot one, and there were four others who had no idea where they had gone. Zhang Heng even suspected that they had escaped the area.

Another 10 minutes later, Zhang Heng finally found half his exposed head in a snow ditch, but at this moment the distance between the two sides was a bit far away, Zhang Heng did not intend to wait any longer, afraid that the little thing would run away again for a moment, he pulled the trigger, however, stiff fingers obviously affected the shooting accuracy.

The gun failed to hit the target, and the skunk disappeared into the snow ditch after being frightened.

Zhang Heng shook his head, put away the rifle in his hand and gave up the training.

He saw Simon on the other side sitting in front of the campfire.

The guerrillas have also been on holiday in the last week, and fighting in other regions has largely come to an end, waiting for the Karelia Gorge to be divided into victories and losses or, more precisely, for Finland to be able to sustain international assistance.

English-French undertook to send expeditionary troops to fight in Finland, but Sweden and Norway categorically rejected the request for the transit of allied forces, while the German side made clear that it had no intention of participating in the Soviet war, nor of mediating, and that Finnish domestic pessimism had begun regarding the timely arrival of reinforcements and their ability to resist Soviet attacks upon arrival.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been negotiating with the Soviet Union to seek the possibility of a truce, although the harsh conditions imposed by the Soviet Union are unacceptable.

It is now February, and the more time passes, the worse and worse the warming of the weather.

Zhang Heng could quickly let go of these things and stop thinking because he is not a party to the war, but for Simon, her country is about to fail and even risk dying, which I'm afraid is another flavor.

Zhang Heng can feel the latter's mood has obviously been somewhat depressed in recent times, but only if he is able to do very little. Personal power has little effect on a war. Even if he has the same strength as Simon, he cannot change the end result.

So he had to find another way to make the girl feel better.

A snowball fell on Simon's back and the girl's face was puzzled, but she was hit in the left arm by two snowballs and immediately bent over to make ammunition.

Precision backlash from the top sniper fell on Zhang Heng's chest, but at that time, Zhang Heng's two shots arrived. Simon dodged the front one but was hit in the neck by the back one. The snow fell in her collar, making her unbearably shivering, but it also provoked her to win.

Snowballs dancing around in the air, you come and go, at least for a brief moment Simon has forgotten the trauma and pain that war has caused her.

…………

It was already night when the two returned to the camp. Zhang Heng burned the water himself and took a hot bath. When he walked outside the living firewood room in his clothes, he accidentally saw the female doctor Maggie there.

“You're back late. ”

Zhang Heng picked out his eyebrows, "What's up? ”

“The war in the Straits of Karelia was unfavourable and the Soviets had broken the first line of defense. There were reports that those guys were ready to respond to the demands of the Soviet Union, and the war was almost over. Archie wanted to talk to you, wondering if you had time. ”
