48 Hours a Day

Chapter 614: Unfriendly Towns

Two days later, Zhang Heng and Wendy finally reached their destination.

Looking at the town in the distance, Zhang Hengdao said, "Did your father tell you he was here to talk business? ”

“Yes, that's what he said before he left.” Wendy nodded, then hesitated and said, “Do you think he would have lied to us about this? ”

“Not likely. Didn't you telegraph the sheriff here before? He said your father had left. ”

“Mmm.”

“At least say he had something to do with it, just go check it out. ”

Zhang Heng finished his horse riding with Wendy through a field, but the crop growth in the field was not good, not only because of the weather or for some other reason, it all seemed to be a luxury, and the strangest thing was that there were no cultivators.

Zhang Heng asked Wendy to wait aside, and he himself turned down his horse, walked into a room, knocked on the door, and nobody answered.

Zhang Heng pulled out the revolver in his waist and pushed the door open, while quickly flashing to one side.

After a few seconds of waiting, there was still no movement inside.

Zhang Heng raised his head, looked into his eyes at the speed, and then put away the revolver.

“What do you say?” Wendy asked later.

“Safe, nobody.” Zhang Hengdao, unlike the deserted town he had experienced before the copy began, had no sign of evacuation here. Zhang Hengdao even saw a book that had been turned in half and collapsed on the table.

There are also wooden toys on the ground for children.

Wendy came down from the horse at the same time and walked in, "Where is everybody? ”

“I don't know.” Zhang Hengdao, who simply circled around the house, didn't see any blood or anything suspicious, said openly, "Get out. ”

They then left the farmhouse and reconstructed the door.

Wendy looked at the field around her eyes and mumbled, “How can it be so bad because nobody cares? How much can be gained in such a year? ”

“I'm afraid not.” Zhang Hengdao, “did you notice, not just the farmland, but the other plants along our way are not growing very well. ”

“Why is that? ”

Zhang Heng heard that he looked at the well next to him. He scooped up a bowl of water from the well. He saw that his eyes were cloudy compared to ordinary well water and tasted salty.

Zhang Heng poured the rest on the ground with a sip, "The water here is contaminated, which is why all the plants don't grow well. ”

“Is it artificial, or is it natural? ”

“It's not clear yet, but people in town should know.” Zhang Heng rode the radish again, "Come on, there's a smoke cooker in town, it should belong to someone. ”

About a minute later, Wendy and Zhang Heng entered the town, a town called Bliss that looked no different from the other western towns.

It's a little chilly, but nobody can see it like the farmhouse outside.

Zhang Hengxian opened two rooms at the hotel and put baggage and other items that were inconvenient to bring with him. This time, Zhang Hengxian did not let Wendy go to investigate the news alone.

The latter stood in front of the window and looked down the street.

“Is it my illusion that everyone we see along the way is hostile to us? ”

“Yeah, I'm yellow, and people are pretty hostile to me wherever I go.” Zhang Hengdao, as he talked, counted the bullets in his bag, and halfway through, he couldn't hold Wendy's soft and hard bubbles. Eventually, he taught her the knowledge of spot shooting, pistols, rifles. He had to admit, Wendy did have quite a gift in shooting, and she learned quickly, at least better than Zhang Heng's riding skills.

When she stopped to rest on the road, she would also find Zhang Heng to practice shooting and even hit two rabbits for dinner.

“But I noticed what you said. ”

“I don't like the way they look.” Wendy Dao, she saw a woman across the street wearing clothes on the balcony, who just glanced at her and walked back into the house, closing the doors and windows.

“This isn't a deadly epidemic, is it? Chickenpox? Or more deadly leprosy... I had a chickenpox outbreak in town when I was born, and I heard Dad say they would concentrate sick people in a room, avoid them contagion to healthy people, and then grab them, send one person every day to deliver food and water until...” Wendyton, “everyone in there is dead, not so much treatment, but murder. ”

Zhang Heng, of course, has heard the fame of leprosy, let alone in the 19th century, even in modern times that have been effectively controlled, in some remote places, people still hear the color change, and in this time of underdevelopment, people have little choice but to take leprosy apart from isolation.

“Careful, this town is unusual. ”

“We leave as soon as we find my father, so where do we start next? ”

“Go straight to the sheriff here," Zhang Hengdao, "since no one else wants to talk to us, but before we do, we have to go to the grocery store to make some supplies. ”

…………

The owner of the grocery store was cleaning the shelves. He turned around and saw Zhang Heng and Wendy walking this way. He immediately got off the scaffold and hung up the closed sign. Then he wanted to close the store door.

But the next moment, a hand was stretched out in the door to stop him from moving.

“Sorry, sir, we're closed.” The boss said, while his hands were dark and hard, however, his hands together had not yet given one force, and the door was slowly pushed open from the outside.

“Looks like we got lucky and caught up with the last shift.” Zhang Heng never waited for the boss's defense to come in with Wendy.

This is it, the boss can only helplessly accept the reality and wipe the sweat off his forehead. “Is there anything I can do for you? ”

“Give me four boxes, no, six boxes of bullets. ”

“What model? ”

“Two boxes of 44-40 Winchester, four boxes of 0.45-inch Colt Long Bounce, thank you. ”

“So many bullets, are you going hunting?” The boss took the bullet out of the shelf and barely spoke.

“Is there anything to hunt around here? ”

“As far as I know, you have to go further if you want to hunt. ”

“Then we don't hunt.” Zhang Hengdao, after that, he turned around and looked at Wendy beside him, "Would you like some licorice? ”

“I'm not a kid anymore.” Wendy frowned.

“Eating sugar doesn't mean it's just a kid. I know a guy. To be honest, I don't know how old he is. Anyway, he's older than anyone you've ever met. The guy eats sweets like a bottomless hole. ”
