A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Episode 541: Opening of the War Part 2
A visible flame of fire. Almost simultaneously, Reurus grasped the pattern of the Spirit Sword Radia he was carrying and threw the magic out of his sheath.
Reflexively using "caloric release", the explosively improved physical ability - Reus saw the bullet through his eyesight, swinging the blade to the ”destination" where the killing air was directed.
The sound of metal bumping into each other sounds, and a slightly delayed, dry burst sound reaches your ears. Reurus caught the slashed bullet dancing in the air with his horizontal eyes, while thinking about it without alarm.
(Round metal bullets... guns, after all?
Probably a gun - it's a one-shot, too. Reurus thinks so, since only one bullet flew in and no shots were fired.
I've never seen or touched anything in my previous life, but if I lived in modern Japan, I remember seeing it in games and movies. But I never thought there was a gun in this world.
(... no, because there's magic in the world, there's not always a gun. There was also a crossbow.)
With that in mind, Reurus waves his love sword again. Then the bullet cut off with the blade fell to the ground, and the “firing sound” arrived again.
"Don't make it a welcoming greeting, I'll bring you something insignificant...."
It was a Reurus who slashed a bullet with Radia, but said nothing about the shock in his hand.
Despite being hundreds of meters away, the bullet did not stall and flew in a straight line. Raise your eyebrows about the existence of guns with such accuracy and power, and at the same time increase your vigilance.
(It was in Japan in the old days... what was it... hi, a firecracker? Something like that?
There was also the possibility of magic equipment, but I couldn't feel the magic because of the distance. However, Reurus speculates that he is using gunpowder because of the explosion.
"... this is the first time I've seen a weapon, is it aimed at me?"
Gilba moans with her eyebrows raised.
Both the first and second bullets were aimed at Gilba, and if Reurus hadn't cut them off, he would have hit them straight. Gilba was aware of the killing, but it seemed that she had never seen a gun before, and her voice was full of danger.
"It's probably a weapon called a gun... uh, a weapon that flies metal bullets with gunpowder..."
"Hmm... Mr. Reurus is very knowledgeable. But a gun... the Gregorians basically don't use flying gear..."
While saying that, Gilba's appearance was slightly blurred. In addition, the third shot sounded slightly delayed, and Zilba stopped moving with her right arm swinging within seconds.
"Hmm... is it true that Mr. Reurus was right about the metal bullet? That's right."
The bullet was about a centimeter in Gilba's right hand.
(... you grabbed it with your bare hands? Maybe the first shot didn't have to be prevented by me...)
Unlike Reurus, who uses "caloric release", Gilba saw the bullet with just "reinforcement" and grabbed it on top. I was bleeding slightly from the palm of my hand because I couldn't stay intact, but I used healing magic to heal the wound in a few seconds.
"The power is medium... I see, are they extremists around“ no choice of means ”?"
"Speaking of which, some of the extremists I've encountered have been using flying gear. Crossbow... no, it's a weapon that fires arrows when you pull the trigger in the form of a bow?
He remembers the priest who was killed in the neck hunt, the man named Keith, and Reus tells him so.
"With this might, we can take down the inferior monsters... but it's possible that we have more powerful guns and guns, so can't we be alarmed?"
"That's right...."
Reurus slashed another flying bullet and raised his eyebrows to see what happened.
No matter how much "calorific release" is used, it is not easy to fill the distance if it is hundreds of meters away. The number of visible people has increased to about three, and bullets fly in every ten seconds, whether each has a gun or not.
(As expected if Gregorian manipulation were coming at us, but unilaterally attacking from a long distance is unexpected....)
I didn't want to consume much magic, but the distance was troublesome. Therefore, if Reurus is considering how to move, Gilba moves before he gives an answer.
"Mr. Reurus will keep your defenses intact. I'll take care of them."
"Are you okay? Perhaps the purpose is to pull it apart....."
"Until the trap is broken."
If you say so, Zilba will run away. Regardless of the danger of being sniped, they rushed straight to the sniper.
"Sarah always looks around for heat sources. We're on our guard, too. If Mr. Gilba is unfavourable, I need backup....."
I don't think Zilba will be late, but I will not. Those were the Reurus who began to follow Zilba with such thoughts in mind, but before they could do so, they saw Zilba attacking the Gregorians.
The snipers were firing at Zilba as she approached, but despite the distance, Zilba held the bullet with her bare hands, and the momentum of the rush continued.
(Three of those snipers are attacking from other directions in a diversion... I don't think so.)
I think that Jilba's out-of-standard situation is getting worse now, and as Jilba suppresses it in the front, Reurus continues to keep an eye on the surroundings. But there was no sign of it, and I felt doubt in my heart.
(In Zilba's opinion, there were Gregorians still ahead of us... Did you happen to get caught searching for nearby enemies?
It was a revulsion to think like that, but the explosion sounded unexpectedly. It was an explosion that exceeded the sound of gunfire, and three people who had been shooting as Reus turned his gaze were lying on the ground and stopped moving.
Looks like there aren't any ambushes around.
As Reurus and the others catch up, Gilba says, watching her surroundings. Reurus looked at the Gregorians rolling at Zilba's feet, but they were all breathing and there was terrible blood on the ground. In addition, the surrounding area is scattered with gun wreckage and thought fragments, and the smell of gunpowder.
"I don't think Jilba-san took it down..."
"Yes. As I approached, I shook my throat with a dagger and exploded with a gun. That was an unexpected suicide bombing, but as far as I can tell from close range, even the lower part of the Gregorian population... is probably beyond reach of the altar."
"Was it a loss of war before we fought?
Eliza wonders, but her face is slightly bluished by the tragic death of the Gregorians.
Reurus solved the "caloric release" and then checked the Gregorian body, but as Zilba said, there was a stab wound to the throat and burning marks all over his body.
(I've seen you decide not to give me information before... but you can't give me a gun. It's completely broken.)
I also checked the debris of the guns that became fragments and scattered on the ground, but except for parts made of metal such as triggers and barrels, there were traces of wood dust.
As expected, the pieces alone will not tell us the type of gun, and the Reurus sighs small.
(If Gilba is right, do you place the weakest of the Gregorians around the "destination"? Or is it a coincidence? I was aiming for Gilba, and I think she was going to ambush me... No, wait, even if the Gregorians were scattered, the gunshots and explosions...)
With that thought, Reurus can focus on holding the Sword of Love.
"Let's get out of here for a moment. Sarah, are there any heat sources approaching from afar?
"Huh? That kind of heat source... ah! Something's coming! They're coming this way! The number of... three... increased! Uh... five... ten minutes!
"What's the direction?
"Over there, over there! And... over there!
That's what Sarah did with her fingers, but the direction was fragmented. Probably listening to the explosion, they're on their way.
Because the amount of explosive powder exploded was inconsistent, it was more likely that the explosion sound, rather than the firing sound, had engaged "something like a suicide bombing”.
"Then come here. If you move with this number of people, you'll leave a trail and ambush the opponent on your way."
"Looks like they're on their way in a group of people. Would you like to pre-empt them?"
Reurus nods to Gilba's suggestion and asks for the lead. We decided it would be safer for Zilba to lead us through the flats and step back into the area where the trees grow again.
"Gilba and I are going forward. Eliza and the others will try to keep their magic alive and provide backup if they need it. Sarah always searches for enemies. Meer, watch your back."
While giving such instructions, Reus uses "Enhancement" instead of "Caloric Release". Magic is abundant, but I want to keep it as low as possible.
(How far can you fight with 'Reinforcement'... until the priest can handle it? I might be able to fight the bishop if I worked with Jilba....)
Sometimes unexpected attacks can fly in, like earlier snipers. For that reason, the Reurus rushed out, conscious that it could be switched to "caloric release" at any time.
