A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Episode 3: Laval Waste City
The sun begins to set in the mountains, and the oblique sun illuminates the earth in orange.
While being afraid of the approaching darkness, Reurus was desperately moving his body to move forward. I don't know what's in the direction of the East Gate that the young soldier told me, but at least I wish there was something I could do to make tonight safe.
A fortress city called Laval, as I learned from soldiers' stories. From there, you can ride in the wind and smell the smell of laughter and dinner, sharpening the spirit of Reurus. The smell of laughter and good smell that arrives is as if there is another world separated by walls.
(I'm afraid I can't deny living in another world.)
It was a realuse that I thought of as an analogy, but it was Japan in Heisei - that is, the other world - that lived in the previous life. As long as magic and monsters exist, we cannot deny the possibility that we are connected to another world by diving through the castle gate.
There is no money to go through the gates, and there is no guarantee of identity, so I can't confirm it no matter how I scratch my feet.
(Beyond the walls... it's impossible. There are soldiers on guard.....)
Nearly ten meters above the stone wall is the figure of a soldier with a bow. The campfire was also prepared as the sun began to set, and the attitude of watching the surroundings from the top of the castle wall was undisturbed by fine dust. No matter how lucky they are in the present Reurus, it will not be possible to cross the walls.
Even if you can break in, you will die without food because you have no money. Even if the monsters don't kill us, there's no chance we'll starve to death.
(I mean, the town is too big... how long does it take to get to the East Gate...)
The town of Laval is very large, as it is rushed by the sunset and travels by small runs, but thinks that the walls are built in a shape close to the circle. The village of Shena was also quite large due to the fact that it had fields inside, but the town of Laval was so many times as big as it could be.
Given the setting sun, the South Gate must have been where Reurus was earlier. It was a real-time rush, but the earliest time left.
Still, before the sun completely ran out, I reached where I could see the East Gate - I opened my eyes unexpectedly.
"... what? Town...?
Behind Reurus's gaze is a dazed murmur. What was there was a swarm of buildings of what should be called a town spreading out of the walls. I thought it was a hallucination of extreme fatigue and hunger, but I was there with a sense of presence.
"What... what is this? What the hell...."
As you remember the unspeakable discomfort, you approach the town and the sweet place. Was there a town built outside the walls? However, I am concerned about the words that the young soldier told me: "If you're lucky, you won't die."
Lined buildings and wooden fences that surround them. It is reinforced by earthen walls, but there are no moats, and it is a poor defense facility compared to the village of Shena. The size itself is much narrower than the town of Laval, but it is clear from the distance that there is a man's work there.
It was a revulsion that made me feel fooled by a fox or a fox, but if there were people, there would be food. As I told myself so, as I approached the town, men wearing poor gear rushed in comparison to the soldiers I had just spoken to.
"What the hell... what are you doing here?
A man with a double-edged sword in his charming armor who thought it was made of animal leather. Among them, a short blonde man calls out, but the atmosphere is different from that of the soldier earlier.
The atmosphere was different from that of a police officer to that of a yakuza, if one could compare it with the knowledge of Reurus. Reurus, with his noble fierceness in his eyes, slightly sucks, but inspires himself by the fact that he has nowhere else to go.
"I'm from Shenna Village... the South Gate? I asked one of my soldiers to come here...."
There is nothing else to say, and I can't afford to fix it. So Reus answered honestly, and the men looked at Reus from head to toe, and put the sword they had in their hand into the sheath.
"Ha, Shenna Village? You've been eating up and running, haven't you?
As Reurus nodded, the men snorted and turned their backs.
"Well, I'm not asking you the details. If you want to come in, do what you want."
"Ah, hey, what the hell is this place..."
I thought they'd ask me more, but Reurus asked the men who backed down lightly. It's good that we got here, but we don't know where it is.
The man who called out to Reus, asking in a hurry, snorted his nose again and replied.
"― ― Laval Waste City. It's a shitty place to gather crowds like Ome."
He dived through a wooden gate driven by armed men and stepped into the abandoned city of Laval, but twisted his neck without understanding what this place was.
(Does waste town look like a slum in my previous life? But in a town of this size, it's a waste town.....)
From the number of buildings lined up and the number of people crossing, it seems that there are more people living than in the village of Shena. I don't know the exact number, but it would be at least a few thousand.
There was no zoning, there was only a road about ten meters wide in the middle of the abandoned city, and the trails seemed to be formed by the disturbed houses. It is impossible to see to the back of the abandoned city, but its messy appearance is more disorderly than that of the village of Shena.
It was a revulsion that rarely looked around, but it was pulled back to reality by the intense hunger transmitted from the abdomen. I have a lot to worry about, but first I have to do something about hunger.
(But you don't have any money...)
If I told them to give me something to eat because I would work and give it back, would they agree to it? Looking around, no restaurant-like buildings were found, and Reurus continued along the abandoned city with a rough step.
Some interlocutors wear swords, but there is no time to be afraid of “such things”. For Reurus today, there is nothing more scary than a hunger so intense that he is about to break through his stomach.
(Speak up in the neighborhood's house and let them grace you... and wait for you to grace me on the street like a beggar...)
If a stranger suddenly comes to the house and says he wants us to eat something, will he give us a meal - no answer.
If you expect the other person's “goodwill” like a beggar on the street, will you be able to get food and money - the answer is no.
Born in this world, Reurus has lived in a narrow environment called Shena Village, but it was impossible to expect that he would do something for free to an unfettered opponent.
Whether it's good or hypocrisy, there's not enough room around to doubt that there are people who can afford it. He looks at the faces of people who interact with him, but he only distorts them in a peculiar way against the reels that turn his eyes.
(Water at least....)
Hunger was already in a dangerous state, and I even felt that my vision was glowing from fatigue and lack of sleep.
Still, if you drink water and physically inflate your belly, you can still do something about it. It is unlikely that monsters will break into this place. All we have to do is sleep through the night and go to the nearby forest in the morning to find something to eat.
So tell yourself, Reurus starts looking for a water field. Water is more essential than human life. There are no rivers nearby, so I suppose they're digging wells.
That's how we look for the water field for a few minutes. Reurus discovered something like a well. They also have wooden well girders, simple but rain-proof roofs, and ropes and barrels for pumping water.
I don't see any pulleys, and I think I need to throw a roped bucket into the well and pull it up with my own hands. From Reurus, who was forced to work in agriculture in the village of Shena, one of the buckets can easily be pulled up even in the worst current conditions.
Whatever it is, it's water. I'm hungry, too, but my throat is dry all day long.
Reus rushed to the well and grabbed the bucket - sooner than someone grabbed its arm.
"Wait."
A stranger grabs Reurus' arm and seals his movements. This man wore leather armor and sword just as he did when he entered the Waste City.
"I don't see your face... is that a superfluous face?
"Ah, ahh... I just got here."
What the hell do you want? It was a realuse that was judged to be bad even if it went out too badly and asked with a suspicious face, but the man gave out his left hand that was empty without paying attention to the fine dust such as the realuse's gaze.
"... where's your hand?
Do you want to shake hands? Reurus grabbed his hand reflectively, but the man turned into a foolish sight.
"It's gold, gold."
"... what?
"If you're going to use a well, pay a water tax. One yura in a barrel."
Water tax, 1 yuan. It was a word I had never heard before, but I understood what it meant. For this reason, Reurus is stunned.
"Water... tax...?
"That's right. Come on, pay up."
You're saying you take taxes to drink water? The Reurus will solidify on the spot, but the man must have figured out he didn't have any money from Reurus's reaction. Brutally throws up and spits away.
"If you don't have the money, get out of here. I'll get in the way of the others."
I spent my previous life in Heisei Japan, and even today, there was no need for drinking water because there was a stream flowing nearby in Shenna Village. Indeed, even in modern times, I have heard that there are paid places for water if I go abroad, but I never thought I would bump into the same wall here.
"Su, a little bit... even a bite..."
Yura is probably the unit of money, but now Reurus is literally empty. In this world, there is no Yura. So I asked him to take a bite, but the man didn't try to get along at all.
If this were the case, the wells elsewhere would be the same. In the abandoned city of Laval, just drinking water seemed to require money.
Are you going to go out of town now and look for water? In a situation where the sun's already gone down?
If you leave this town now, you will be as scared of the monsters as you were last night. In the first place, there is no guarantee that there is a water source nearby, and even if there is, I don't think we can find it in the dark.
It is also out of the question to push back the man in front of you and take away the water. The man is already in a state of imminence from Reurus' attitude and is not pulling out of the sheath, but putting his hand on the handle of the sword. As the atmosphere is familiar with violence, it should also be regarded as the guardian of the well.
"Somewhere... is there a river nearby?
"... you can walk east for an hour. If you want to kill yourself, don't stop."
The danger of walking at night seems to be well understood by the man in front of him. Reurus stood up slowly as he dropped his shoulders.
"I'll work instead of taxes... Can you give me some water?
"What can you do? Have you ever defeated a monster? Have you ever learned a sword? Can you use magic?
Reurus remained silent in response to the man's question. All of this is inexperienced, and there is only one thing we can do about the current revulsion.
"If it's farming..."
It is easy to calculate the four-rule arithmetic, but I don't know the letters or numbers of this world. Even if you can calculate without knowing a word, you won't be trusted. That's what I said about farming, but the reaction was cold.
"I'm on time. Come on, get out of here. Or do you want me to slap you?
A man who takes his hand off the handle of a sword and instead tightens his fist. After seeing it, Reurus lowered his head and turned away from the scene.
(Can't you expect me to share the food with you... gold, money, money... you ungrateful son of a bitch in any world?)
I was going to learn it in the 15 years I spent in Shena village, but the severity doesn't seem to change when I leave the village. At a minimum, the village of Shena may still be better off because the meal was ready.
Reurus moved his feet, which were about to stop, and managed to move forward. But I don't know where to go. As the sun went down, it began to lose popularity, and the candle-like lights that slightly leaked from the houses lit the road, but there was no way to go.
Still, you can't get anything if you stop. It's a short stay, but it doesn't make sense to expect the goodwill of others in the abandoned city of Laval. However, I can't leave the abandoned city right now, so I'll start looking for a place to sleep tonight at least.
(You can still walk... tomorrow is fine... if you sleep and rest overnight, it's still...)
Hungry, thirsty, and tired. They are corrosive to Reurus' body, but if they can walk, they are still fine. In fact, I realized that I had already exceeded my limit, but if I didn't tell myself that it was okay, I would fall like this.
(Ah... speaking of which, did you die under the same circumstances in your previous life...)
He cheated on himself that he was still okay, and he died. The idiot says it won't heal even if he dies, but apparently it was a fact. Reurus wanted to laugh at himself for doing similar things, even though it was because of the environment.
(... hmm?
I didn't actually laugh because I was depleted, but I sniffed a good smell and stopped my feet. In my previous life, anyway, I smelled a fragrant dish that I had no connection to in my present life. A fascinating smell of appetite and belly bugs.
Reurus walks flatly so that he can be caught by the smell. It seemed like a moth attracted to a moth lamp, but Reus couldn't get rid of this smell and walk away.
(Is that... a restaurant? Or is it a tavern?
Then Reurus arrived at a restaurant that was so busy that it could hear the noise outside. It appears to be a two-storey building made of wood and stone, and operates a restaurant on the first floor. There is something like a sign on it, but I am disappointed that I cannot read it on the Reurus.
(Restaurant... but I don't have any money. Then....)
It depends on the dish you make, but cooking uses a lot of ingredients. At that time, slight cuts and skin appeared, but the Reurus that came to mind sparkled his eyes.
Do you have any leftovers?
Whether it's raw garbage from cooking or leftovers left over by guests, that's fine. Even raw garbage can now be eaten without hesitation. Originally, they ate weeds, insects, and even tree roots with dirt at the end of the sentence. The leftovers of the guests are a feast in heaven.
Reurus quickly walked around the shop and started looking for trash cans. I don't think there are any polybuckets, but I thought there were some wooden boxes for discarding garbage.
(Not this way... behind the store? Oh, there's a crate!
Turning to the back of the store, there was a wooden box near the door that looked like the back exit. Reurus immediately rushes over and puts his hand on the lid, slowly lifting it so that it doesn't make a sound.
--But it was empty.
…………
I felt lost when I opened the chest. Reurus checks the wooden box twice or three times, but there are no pieces of vegetables left over.
(Was it a bad time... maybe I'll come in a little later or in the morning...)
It's just getting dark now, and the restaurant is busy as far as I can hear. Even if there is leftovers, it may still be later.
Reurus told himself so and gently closed the lid. Let's wait nearby to be aware of any leftovers for the first time. The Reurus who decided to do so turned his heel back - poking him on the knee.
Though it is leftovers or raw garbage, it is expected that you can eat something. The loss must have cut the thread of tension. Until then, the body that had managed to move stopped moving to betray the will of Reurus.
Instead of just poking your knees, your body leans forward. Reurus, staring at the approaching ground, recalled what he had seen fifteen years earlier, almost dying in his previous life.
(Trying to fish for leftovers... it's a worse cause of death than before)
I am exhausted by overwork and malnutrition. You can't even laugh, even if you're reborn and the cause of death hasn't changed.
(If you survive, you'll end up dying... hah, it didn't mean anything, it was like a garbage life...)
Reurus, lying on the ground, thinks like that, but his thoughts are even billions. The coolness of the lying ground is now pleasant, and Reurus' consciousness gradually falls into darkness.
"Ah... shit, this is no good..."
Finally, he muttered, and Reurus lost consciousness.
