A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Episode 5: Payback Part 1
Walking east from the abandoned city of Laval is enough. Walking about a kilometer feels like a revulsion, I discovered a good place to pick up firewood.
There are few trees to call a forest, and there are signs of felling everywhere. Unlike the woods where we had to spend the night the other day, the sun had reached the ground and the whole forest had a bright atmosphere.
Scaffolding is not bad, and tall grass grows everywhere. There aren't a lot of fallen leaves, and if anything happens, they won't take their feet. There are places where fist-sized stones stick out from the ground, but if you keep an eye on your feet, it won't hurt.
"Is there a monster...?
There is some gaze through the woods, but it doesn't look like there are any creatures. I didn't catch my thoughts many times before, and I didn't hear any footsteps or screams. When Reurus is relieved, he steps into the woods watching his surroundings.
This time, the purpose is to collect firewood. I would like to find food if possible, but I am not a hunter, even if I am a former farmer. I know some vegetables grown in the fields, but amateurs are also good at wild plants and mushrooms.
(I mean, mushrooms aren't good... if they suck, they die)
Accidents resulting in the death of mushrooms from mountain harvests have been on the news many times in my previous life. No matter how different the world is, it's dangerous to think that the mushroom ecosystem has changed.
I have never broken my stomach after eating anything since I am now. I may be okay with a small amount of poison mushrooms, but if I succeed, there may also be mushroom monsters.
(Mushroom monster... what kind of monster is he? Did you put the winter insects and summer plants in more danger? What is this, parasitic to moth larvae? Even more dangerous is parasitic to humans.....)
Imagine yourself as a seedbed of mushrooms, and Reurus shook his head. Though I don't think so, the feet that stepped into the woods are about to fall back.
(I'm a kid who freaks out from his own imagination... no, I'm a kid.)
After watching a horror movie, it's the same fear that something is lurking in the dark. Reurus laughed bitterly that he had not abandoned his imagination, and discovered the “first prey” and stopped his feet.
(Is this a vine... okay, I'll take it with me)
I'm glad I came to pick up the firewood, but I just wanted a rope to put it together. For this reason, Reurus nods after checking the flexibility and strength of the vine that was entangled in the tree when he rips it off with his bare hands.
Yeah, I think I'll be able to use it enough to put together firewood.
If people hanged, they would be able to cut a thousand pieces, but they could tie the firewood together. Though the length is fragmented, when you cut about five thousand nearby vines, you now look to the ground.
With axes and so on, we could cut them, but bare-handed reuses are impossible. That's why we collect the branches and dead trees that fall on the ground.
(... does this burn properly?
It was a realuse that decided to collect firewood, but the branches I picked up still seemed to have moisture left. The weather has been nice over the past few days, so it is somewhat dry. If I try to burn it, it will not burn, but I still doubt whether it can be used as firewood.
(When I give it to Dominic, I'll tell him about it.)
Instead of cooking, you will use fire. If you leave it nearby at that time, the moisture will fly and you can use it as firewood - a realuse that you want to use.
There shouldn't be anything I can't use. That's how I walk around, picking up branches and dead trees that are falling on the ground.
The stuff I picked up was mostly small, but inside there were branches as thick as Reurus's arms. However, due to its thickness, it has a lot of moisture and would be inappropriate for use as firewood. For this reason, Reurus decided to use it as a grass stick.
The shape is slightly distorted, but it can also be used as a cane because it is about one meter long. I didn't feel comfortable treating it as a weapon, but just holding a wooden stick made me feel less nervous.
(... no, if you fight a lion like yesterday with a stick like this, you'll die soon...)
Reurus has not seen many monsters before. However, when I lived in Shena Village, I saw a monster coming to vandalize the field, and I shook my head against the memories of that time.
Rather than a lion monster, I didn't think I could defeat even a monster who came to vandalize the field. Even the smallest monster Reurus knows is about the size of a medium-sized dog. If he asks if he can defeat it with a stick of wood, he can only return it.
Even if you get weapons, armor, etc., it is a situation that is lacking not only in gold, but also in the diet of the day. Reurus waved a stick of wood and nodded to see its weight.
"Well, it's better than nothing... no, wait.
With the aim of collecting firewood aside, Reurus looks around and begins to look for stones of affordable size. Looking for a thick vine and collecting about three, the stone is tied to a stick of wood and fixed.
What we are making is a very simple stone axe. It is unforgivable just to have a stick of wood, but I thought about adding more power by putting a stone on the tip.
(Hmm... Stone axe on worn clothes. Instead of medieval times, I feel like I went backwards in B.C.)
Even a stone axe has no sharpness. It would be interesting to include it in the classification of the earliest axe, and it looks more like an axe with a handle on a stone than an axe. I try to shake it gently, but every time I shake it, the stone shakes to see if there is a gap just by tying it with a vine.
"This is what amateur craftsmanship looks like... ah"
When I shook it a little harder, the stone tied with the vine slipped through and flew away. It was a revulsion that dropped it off like it was a delusion, but the asexuality of the embarrassment came up.
Regardless of the appearance, I am ashamed of what I am doing even though the contents are at a good age. I was in the mood to hang my neck on the spot as if my parents had seen me shadow boxing with a string of lights.
"... now, let's pick up the firewood"
I started picking up firewood without the ugliness. I tried to make a stone axe thinking it would be a weapon, but an amateur wouldn't mind carrying a weapon. We should run before we fight.
Tell yourself so, Reurus picks up the firewood. It's not a place you want to stay for long, so you should try not to take as long as you can.
(Then why did I make a stone axe...)
Have you felt relieved by eating and sleeping properly for the first time in a long time? While reflecting on his actions, Reurus picked up some firewood and tied it up with a vine. After collecting about 30 minutes of firewood, he began to move out of the forest.
If you collect too much firewood, it is heavy to walk with, and heavy if you encounter a monster. For this reason, we decided to separate them in a certain amount, and to carry all the firewood we collected only when we returned to Laval Waste City.
(In the spring, it seems good to have wild grass... no mushrooms, no weeds to eat... it would be helpful if there were a lot of dead trees.)
The main purpose, the procurement of firewood, has been successful so far, but we have not found anything that could be used as food at all. It was a disappointing revulsion, but I comforted myself that the firewood was gathering.
After deducting a little tax, I thought I could pay back about the amount of food I had eaten at Dominic's restaurant last night.
(It's too heavy to say thanks for a single night's meal... and I don't really think I can give it back like this, but at least I want a piece of bread)
I want some bread for tonight's meal while paying my thanks. Will it be okay if we negotiate with Dominic around here?
With that in mind, Reurus returns to the forest entrance, but leans his neck with a strange feeling of discomfort. It's not strong enough to call it a bad feeling. A trivial anxiety, like when I went to work in my previous life and thought I might have forgotten to lock my house.
However, there is no house in Reurus today, it is just a thought. Reurus thought so - he ran into a giant rabbit about 80 centimeters long.
"... what?
Unexpectedly stood on the spot and a dazed voice leaked.
A lovely shape with brown fur that resembles a rabbit known to Reurus in his previous life. However, it is a large dog-like body and has two horns on its head like a bullfight. The tip of the horn was very sharp and seemed to penetrate easily, such as the human body.
The opponent must have noticed the approaching Reurus. Lies his body on the ground, putting his strength on his limbs and turning the corner of his head toward Reurus. It seemed like a narrowed bow, completely capturing the reels, which were also in the “range” of idiots.
"--Ooooooooooo!?
A rabbit monster that kicks the ground with its limbs and turns into bullets. It was no coincidence that Reurus was able to avoid the assault. He slipped his feet with fallen leaves and lost his posture.
Thanks to this, I was able to avoid the two corners that flew through my heart - but the corner (s) of the rabbit itself were inevitable, and there was a shock to my left shoulder.
(What, hey, no sign of that!
I always had a bad feeling that the monster would get closer. But this time there was no such thing. Although there was a strange feeling of discomfort, it was a trivial one, and it was just a mistake.
Was the unpleasant feeling so far a coincidence, or was there some reason why my guess didn't work this time?
Although such a question arose, it was only for a moment. If we don't focus on the threat right now, we'll lose our lives instantly.
As a horny rabbit, I suppose the Reurus would have avoided it. Killing the momentum that jumped out by twisting the body in the air landed on the trunk of the tree and set the target to Reurus again.
There were too few actions that could be taken by the rebalanced reuses that slipped their feet with fallen leaves and touched the body of the horny rabbit. Even if we escape, we need to get back in shape, and the horny rabbit won't give us that kind of time.
I have a question as to whether I can escape in the first place. Reurus is also unconfident, but as far as we've heard in his previous life, rabbits travel at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour. If the opponent adds the monster, you won't be surprised if you knock it twice as fast.
I mean, I can't run away. The moment he turned his back, he was stabbed to death by skewers. It was the best way not to meet.
Compared to the monster of the lion, his body is also small, and there is no point in running into the woods. Before that, if we don't avoid the next attack, we'll just die.
"Nnnhh!
The horny rabbit kicks the trunk of the tree. At that moment, Reurus abandoned his posture and avoided the horn rabbit's assault by rolling to the ground. And when he threw away the bundle of wood and the stick in his hand, he crawled to the ground and fled into the forest.
In the woods where there is no flat land and, if anything, a shield. It is self-evident that the latter would be the case if one of them were chosen. If you're lucky, climbing a tree may give up. Considering the time it takes to climb the tree, it looks like a horny rabbit will catch up with me and stab me in the skewer.
Reurus, who had abandoned his luggage and became lightweight, ran to the zigzag and shielded the trees while paying attention to his feet. That way, the horny rabbits won't run wild. I thought so, but when I followed myself, I realized that a faint footsteps would follow me, causing my face to twitch.
Looking back a little bit, he saw a horn rabbit chasing a revulsion with unmatched agility. It would be praiseworthy to follow the Zigzag Reurus and hunt down the four-legged beast and the exact location of its prey - but not as a target.
(I mean, why did you attack him!? A rabbit is a herbivore!?
As far as Reurus knows, a creature called a rabbit should have been a herbivore. Reurus may be attacking because he stepped into the territory, but regardless of his size and sharp horns, it is only fearful that the cute figure of a rabbit known in his previous life will come to kill him.
Ugh!
The fear from behind and the sound of kicking a strong ground. Reurus, who felt them, flew reflexively diagonally forward, jumping forward and rolling the ground. My back hurts because of pebbles and unevenness on the ground, but much better than being penetrated from behind with horns like the tip of a spear.
Seeing a horny rabbit rushing through the air like a bullet at the edge of his sight, Reurus quickly stood up and ran out.
(The opponent walks four legs... how do I escape!?
He desperately searched for a solution while running around, but he never had a wild beast against him in his previous life. I've heard that bears don't like downhills, but where they are now is flat land, not in the woods. On top of that, I didn't think I could scatter horny rabbits on a slight downhill slope, and I began to feel despair in the heart of Reurus.
"Yikes!?
I managed to avoid another assault - my voice leaked into the pain running to my left shoulder. The horns were circumvented, but they were cut with nails. Compared to horns, it was short and did not appear to be a threat, but it seemed to have enough sharpness to rip people's skin.
It's not as deep as a hand, but it's inevitable that bleeding and pain will slow you down.
"Kh... shit!
Health, speed, weapon. It is inferior to all of them. Reurus keeps running while keeping his wounds under control, but he won't get far and he'll lose his life.
If it's impossible to escape, we have to fight. It didn't take long to make that decision, but the question is how to fight it.
--Watch out for horns and nails while catching the horny rabbit rush?
I won in physique, but I don't think I can stop the horny rabbit from penetrating my entire body. You need to stand in the front to catch it in the first place, and you will die from being pushed by momentum through the corners.
--Pick up the stones, throw them at them, fight them away?
I don't think the stone thrown hits, and even if it hits, it's likely to hit the horny rabbit's fur and muscles. It must be judged that there is a greater risk of exposure when picking up stones.
- Do you beat him with a handy branch of a tree?
I don't feel confident being hit by agile horn rabbits, and I don't know if it's as effective as throwing stones. By the way, I felt it was too dangerous to challenge a melee.
(I can't hit you....)
I just feel like beating myself up while collecting firewood. If I had time to make stone axes, I should have quickly collected firewood and returned to the abandoned city of Laval.
It was too late to regret it, but I guess it meant that I didn't recognize the monster. Like my parents in this world, I will be killed by monsters.
- I'm not kidding.
He escaped from the village of Shena and was finally free. There is no social position, it is a life of fishing for leftovers and falling, but it is no longer necessary to continue cultivating the fields to carry out the routine work.
It's no joke to die here. Survive with any hand and sing the song of the world.
"Ugh!?
It was a revulsion that consolidated that determination, but the body swims through the universe in a "something”. Reflectively, I turned my eyes to the main culprit, and there was a stone that I used to make the stone axe earlier, and I just shaken it once and flew away.
(I can't believe it's such a thing!
The feeling of discovering my black history unexpectedly. That is also the case in this life-threatening situation. It was like a sudden burst of unexploded ordnance that I didn't even notice.
Reurus is likely to fall to the ground for each momentum he was running, but aggressively holds his hands against the ground to prevent landing from the face. Still, it wasn't completely safe, and it turned into flashy wings rolling over fallen leaves.
"I, uu...."
Breathing is likely to stop with falling shocks and pain. Still, now that the horny rabbit is chasing him, there is no time to moan at the pain, and when Reurus bites his teeth and endures the pain, he tries to wake his body by supporting the tree next to him.
"A-ah"
And I saw the moment the horny rabbit's body was “fired.” The horny rabbit's body is already in space, like laughing at Reurus, who will soon wake his body up. I was approaching to capture Reurus in range and skewer him with his sharp horns.
It has been a realuse that has so far been able to avoid a horny rabbit attack, but I can't make it this time. I understand that.
Your posture, body pain, and the aim and momentum of the horny rabbit. It concludes that all of this is inescapable.
--A second death is imminent.
The moment he realized it, Reus felt that the sight he was watching was slow motion. It feels like falling on the edge of a previous life, slowly approaching the ground.
The flow of time was felt to be slow, and I even felt like I could see even one hair growing in an approaching horny rabbit.
Though the body moves desperately in such a relaxed world, the horny rabbit strikes clearly faster than the Reurus avoids. No matter how you scratch your feet, a sharp corner will rip out your torso and sew it into the tree behind you.
The rest can't die instantly, they just bleed to death as they beat their guts to pieces and hit them hard. Even if there are flashy wind holes in the abdomen and hate, there is no body that can move smoothly, and no matter how much memory of the previous life there is, I don't think I can do anything.
(I heard that horse running lights are running at this time.....)
It was the same at the time of the “first time", but even with death at present, the running lights did not flow. If I dare say, the sight that looks like slow motion today may be a running lamp, but slowly but surely I don't like seeing horny rabbits.
Reurus' body is also moving slightly, but cannot be avoided no matter how many times it is checked. It is faster to pierce the torso than to avoid it. Poor posture and body aches, too, are simply not fast enough to avoid horny rabbits.
It was impossible to overcome this situation without going faster than a horny rabbit - Gakin and I felt like a gear mesh in my head.
