A Chronicle of Life in a Different World

Episode 18: Monster eater

A week has passed since we arrived in the abandoned city of Laval.

One of Dominic's restaurants - quite a small place to call it. Feeling the morning signs in it, Reurus woke up naturally, waking himself up from a wooden box bed that had completely laid on his bed during the past week.

Laying a thin futon transferred from Corona on top of the straw, this is a crude bed that is only a thin futon, but much better than a bed that only lays straw on the ground, as was the case in the village of Shena.

When I woke up with a light stretch, the door of the storage unit was knocked.

"Mr. Reurus, are you awake?

"It just happened. Good morning, sir."

What came across the door was the voice of Corona, and Reurus laughed bitterly that this was something he was accustomed to hearing over the past week.

Then he washed his face with the toilet and water provided by Corona, smoothed the breakfast prepared by Dominic, and turned to the Adventurers' Union.

(Uhm... it's not a dream...)

Reurus murmured with emotion as he greeted the inhabitants of the abandoned city of Laval, who had become somewhat familiar in the past week. I wonder if my current life is a dream with a soft applause, but even if I pinch my cheeks every time, it conveys the pain firmly.

Compared to the life I had in my previous life, the environment in the abandoned city of Laval would be terrible. It is difficult to say that it is comfortable because of the hygienic condition of the living environment and even the danger posed by monsters.

However, there was still a difference between heaven and earth compared to life in Shena village.

If you work as an adventurer, you can earn food and support, and if you are courteous, the inhabitants of the abandoned city of Laval will respond. Without being unreasonably abused, I can feel that I live as a human being.

― ― How precious and happy it is for Reurus to have just “that much”.

Uuuu, good morning

Open the doors of the Adventurers Association with light steps and a light voice tone. Today and today we have to move on to work and make a little money. As the presence or absence of gold is directly related to the quality of the diet, it is more important than ever as a revulsion.

Hey Monster eater

"Are you hungry?

Reurus enters the Adventurers' Union and his fellow workers casually speak up. There was a mix of teasing voices, but Reurus replied with a smile because he did not feel malicious.

"When I was born, I just broke my stomach. Thank you for your stupid tongue, which even monsters can eat deliciously."

"Monster eater" - an nickname used to refer to Reurus recently.

Literally speaking, it felt like a master of demon extermination, but it was a nickname given literally by eating monsters. Other adventurers often left aside materials other than the monsters they had defeated, so they ate them in disappointment.

Regardless of the horny rabbit or the like, eating raw citron, which can only be seen as a giant sea lion, led to it being called that with some kind of fear and teasing.

(It may be like picking up food and being dirty, but if you throw away “food” right in front of you...)

The adventurer who took down the monster also got permission and leveled it all out, so I don't think there's a problem with the Reus himself. No matter how much your diet has improved, you can't miss the food in front of you.

Thanks to Dominic, the nutritional status has greatly improved, but the body that has been using it for many years is always looking for nutrition. Therefore, the carcasses of the abandoned monsters are eaten by the eyes, but it seems that Reurus' behavior is heretical from the perspective of those who hold the position of Adventurer.

Still, all you have to do is make fun of it because you are somewhat familiar with the life of Reurus in the village of Shena.

"If I leave the remains of the monster intact, other monsters will come by. But if you eat it all... I mean, is this a good idea to fill my stomach and keep the monsters away from the abandoned city of Laval?

"Boy... what are you talking about?

Natalia's stunned voice flies over the counter against Reurus, who tries to justify eating monsters.

"Mr. Kanji, it's no longer important for me."

"That's why eating without cooking is a fool's business...."

Against Natalia in fancy clothing, Reurus said nothing more important than being eaten. However, Natalia's voice tone has not changed. He thinks Reurus's behavior is foolish.

"Then I'll cook and eat it from now on."

"I wonder if you have a choice not to eat... come on, don't be stupid and get ready."

That's what Reurus said, pointing his foot towards the armory. Then he wore leather armor commensurate with the size of his body, fitted his nails, lowered his sword to his waist with a sword band, fixed the dagger to the back of his waist with a sheath, and attached his toenails.

"Ugh... it's dangerous. I was myself."

It is a variety of equipment that can be borrowed by the Adventurers Association, except for ankle armor and shoes. What I asked the shoe shop to do is complete and I have been using it since yesterday.

Regardless of the shoes, the toenails were left with the Adventurers' Union. The toenails aren't that big, but the storerooms on the beds of Dominic's restaurants aren't that big.

The warehouse is used not only as a sleeping bed for the revus, but also as its original application. In other words, Dominic and Corona have a lot of space because they don't normally use it. I couldn't bring my toenails there, but I left them with the Adventurers Association.

"Uhh... it's as good as ever. I knew it was a made-to-order."

The shoes are the same, but the toenails are also made to match the body of the revulsion, so it feels good to wear. I don't say it's like a feather, but even if I put it on my ankle, it seems to be light enough.

The shoes and ankle armor that I was asked to make with all the money, but Reurus was impressed that it was worth the price. I felt uncomfortable wearing what was on loan from the Adventurers Association, but the bespoke shoes and toenails fitted into the shape of my feet from the beginning.

It is also convincing that Nicolas and Sharon argue that shoes matter. The shoes were entirely made of leather and the toenails were mostly made of leather, but reinforced with metal plates to protect the tires and knees. I've never tried it, but it looks like I could damage the monster just by kicking my knees.

(But when this happens, I feel uncomfortable with armor and so on.....)

I was even impressed by the user-friendliness of my shoes and toenails, but now I'm worried about other gear. Regardless of the sword you hold in your hand, the leather armor and nails that are fixed to your body are subtly unsized.

Although I have become accustomed to these discomforts to a certain extent, I am determined to have them make something that suits my body once I have saved up money. I don't want it to happen, but that trivial discomfort could kill me.

"Well... what kind of request do you have today?

When the equipped Reurus leaves the vault, he talks to Natalia who plays with the smoke pipe at the reception.

"Well... it's either a farm escort or surveillance around town."

"I mean, as usual."

Hearing Natalia's reply, Reurus smiled a little bitterly. Since Nicolas and Sharon took out the monster on their first day together, only two kinds of requests Natalia talked about have returned to Reurus.

This is the “relatively” safe request Corona was talking about before, and it would be enough for the runaway adventurer Reurus to take care of. However, if I'm unlucky, I could run into a powerful monster and die.

"Well, I'll be watching around town."

Reurus decides without any particular worries. This was not decided without any thought, it was the result of thinking that became a revulsion.

In the case of escorts for agricultural work, it is naturally necessary to protect others. Because of the large number of people working in agriculture, there were many guards, but I didn't think I could fight while protecting others.

In that regard, surveillance around the town is easy. We need to get some distance from Laval Waste City, but we just need to keep an eye on the monsters on the low level of shielding.

This will be our sole surveillance, but if we find the monster, we don't need to crush it. If they decide that they can't defeat them, they turn back to the abandoned city of Laval and bring their backup to beat them.

There are always multiple gatekeepers at the entrance to the abandoned city of Laval, and the “family” can help you if you need them. Even in the shallow, Reurus has become part of Laval's abandoned city, so if you need help, you can help.

Alternatively, you can ask for help from an adventurer who is monitoring monsters around the Raval Waste City at the same request - but Reurus thinks he can defeat monsters that are unlikely to be defeated because they are not his own experience.

The best thing to do is find people and act in multiple ways, but the Adventurers of the abandoned city of Laval are understaffed. Reurus, the rushing adventurer, is acting alone to prove it, and he has never crossed the line without the help of other adventurers.

There are rewards for not finding monsters, no need to protect others, and if so, help your allies defeat monsters. For such reasons, the request received by Reurus was a surveillance option around the abandoned city of Laval.

If you rise in rank as an adventurer, or if you find more than one of your fellow adventurers to work with, you'll be able to take on other requests. However, there is no such thing as a current revulsion, and all it takes is to earn money to make daily living expenses and equipment.

(I wish I could at least get a little more instruction from Nicolas and the others....)

When I think of Nicolas and Sharon, who took care of me for only one day, Reurus sighs. I heard that they were responding to a request from the Adventurers Association, but I haven't seen them since I last met them.

"Well, I guess it's just me around here. Well then, I'll be out, too."

I also wore equipment and received a request. That way, the rest of the time is for “work”.

"Hmm... for now, there's nothing unusual."

Two hours after the abandoned city of Laval. It was a Reurus that occasionally changed places and looked around, but fortunately, I couldn't find a monster.

Stay as close as possible to places where monsters such as the forest are likely to come out, and just check from afar. Frequently I look up at the sky to see if there are any flying monsters, but for now, ordinary birds just pass over my head occasionally.

"Even if there's a monster flying in the sky, you can't do it."

Every time I find a stone of affordable size, I pick it up, but I don't think I can get a flying monster to hit it. Depending on the height of the flight, it will not arrive in the first place.

The body trained in agriculture is quite muscular, and the recent diet and rest tends to heal, but it is difficult to hit monsters that fly tens of meters above their heads with stones the size of which can be controlled by monsters.

The limit would be to concentrate on yourself. Reurus, who thought so, threw the stone he was holding into the sky as if it were a handball, and double-checked its weight and nodded loudly.

"Can baseball pitchers do that... no, can't they?

I have hardly had any baseball experience in my previous life. When I was a kid, I used to play catch balls with friends, and I didn't have precise controls.

Even if there was control like a pitcher, it wouldn't be as helpful as the knowledge you learned in your previous life because your body was different once again. The magic of "Enhancement" used by Nicolas is different, but it's just a promise of something that is not a revus without magic shards.

(Well, I don't know what magic means in the first place...)

I listened to Nicolas and Sharon and tried to gather information to become a realuse, but there was nothing else I could do about magic.

― ― Magic is interference with the world using magic.

When I asked Natalia what magic was, the words of nuance came back. It seems that magic can be used to ignite fire, produce water and ice, blow the wind, cause lightning, and even break the ground at the end of the sentence.

Yeah, I don't know what that means.

Reurus' reaction to the conversation runs out of words.

The existence of magic is familiar in previous life with games and cartoons, but it is only a fictional existence. Perhaps magic existed somewhere on Earth, but I've never heard of magic in the Reurus of the previous life.

That being said, the world of magic has been reborn, and listening to various stories is too sensual. If you have magic and can manipulate it, you don't have to spell or chant it, and you can do it without preliminary movements.

It seems that if you can use magic, you can feel the magic of the opponent and read the signs of magic, but if you can't use magic, it's an extremely noisy story. If a malicious person uses magic, it will suddenly be held in a peaceful city at a man-fire show.

Magic is classified by attributes, and power also determines rank, but if you turn around, that's all. Power also varies greatly depending on the skill and amount of magic of the individual you use, and you can exercise magic as long as magic lasts.

What a terrible thing about that fact.

As far as Sharon is concerned, magic will take time to heal if depleted. However, it can be said that the cost of recovery is only time. Depending on the magic attributes that can be used, it is only feared from the Reurus that magic can be used to gain a means of attacking from a distance.

(Let's give up fighting magical monsters... yeah, we can't do that.)

Naturally, those facts apply not only to people who can use magic, but also to monsters who can use magic. There were few types of monsters that I had encountered before, but even among those few, there were monsters that could use magic.

At least we should stop standing alone. Reurus wonders if there are allies who can use magic, or if he can only use weak magic to target monsters.

(Even if you fight, it's because you're used to fighting monsters.)

Whatever monster you encounter depends on your luck, but for now you should get used to fighting monsters. You should earn money in the process, get some equipment, and then try. With good gear, you can't beat monsters, but with bad gear, you can jump to death.

Stay as safe as you can, make requests, save money, and equip your gear little by little. Adventurer business is like gambling with his life as a chip, but it was also farmer life in Shena village that put his life at risk.

Rather, in the village of Shenna, the reward was too small, contrary to the chips bet. In that sense, the status quo, which rewards only the hard work, is the best environment even as a revulsion, and I can feel that we are moving towards a “bright future” regardless of the speed of cow walking.

"Well then... will you do your best to make a little money?"

Speaking of what I can do now, all I can do is fulfill the request without clues. If you can concentrate on finding monsters and find monsters you can defeat on your own, you can defeat them and increase your rewards. Otherwise, all you have to do is retreat and take safety measures.

I can't believe I want to die again because I've died once. Some risk is tolerated, but there is no need to challenge the monster with a cannon. All you have to do is make money safely and securely.

Regardless of the age of the appearance, the "contents” are considerably older. That's why I don't hesitate to take safety measures, and I don't think it's a shame.

--To know that there are no “safety measures” in this world, experience in the previous life becomes a vendetta.

"... hmm?

Something moved in the woods, about a hundred meters away, in front of Reurus's gaze, which he was watching carefully. Details are unknown because of the distance, but it is an unnatural move if the wind shakes the trees and grass.

Reurus put his hand on the handle of the sword while observing or retreating immediately. A monster you have seen and have defeated may fight, but a monster you see for the first time should escape.

As you think about that, you take a little distance from the forest, and the shadow you see in the forest slowly shows up.

"... what?

It was Nicolas who showed up holding a non-moving Sharon and wetting her whole body with blood.
