A Chronicle of Life in a Different World

Episode 144: Mourning Part 3

Corona found herself powerless when her mother lost her life fighting monsters.

Now it's half a lifetime ago, a distant past. Still, it's a vivid reminder.

--Events that you will never forget until you die.

It is not uncommon for people to lose their lives in the abandoned city of Laval, where Corona lives. I knew the “reality” as a child.

But familiar - that's what killed my family, I never imagined.

It was difficult to imagine a young child's parents dying, and Corona never thought about it until suddenly a farewell visit.

Both his father, Dominique, and his mother, Katerina, were so famous adventurers that no one in the abandoned city of Laval knew their name.

Corona was seven years old. No adventurers surpassed Dominic and Katerina in the abandoned city of Laval.

Not only Dominic, but Caterina was also "fortified", but she was able to use magic, and one of the adventurers in the abandoned city of Laval was out of the box.

If there had been an adventurer that could have reached Corona's parents, it would have been Bartolo, who was an active adventurer at the time. Dominic and Caterina couldn't win with such a baltro.

--If they were together, the end would have been avoided.

Corona is twice as old as she was when she lost the caterine. I'm sure you'll keep thinking about it, even if you're three or four times older.

While Dominic was on a rescue mission elsewhere, Katerina, who was defending Laval Waste City, lost her life fighting monsters.

In words, that's all. It will be common not only in Laval Waste City, but also in other waste cities. I must have been surrounded by such misfortune just because I didn't notice Corona when I was young.

Now Dominic can decide to retire - there's a new wizard named Nicolas and Sharon. But Nicolas was a good adventurer at the time. Sharon wasn't even an adventurer.

We couldn't split both Dominique and Caterina into rescue requests, and Dominique, who was more skilled, decided to do it alone.

There was Bartolo, but he couldn't deal with a powerful monster on his own, and Bartolo didn't have enough skill to complete the rescue request. As far as Corona's personal mood was concerned, it would have been best to decline a rescue request.

That way, Katerina, my mother, would never have lost her life.

I also know that it is difficult for a “present” corona. The connection between waste cities is thin, but it is still not zero. There is a cooperation system in place so that we can accommodate each other when things go wrong and cannot rely on the regular army.

Still, Corona was better than any other adventurer. As a result, I lost my mother, but I was able to witness the death.

I was more fortunate in that respect than Dominic. By the time Dominic got back from the rescue mission, everything was “over.”

I remember that my father, who usually looked harsh, was paranoid. The first time I saw that face, Corona swallowed words, leaving her father to her childhood.

A girl (Corona) who tried to blame her father for leaving her mother elsewhere was shocking enough to swallow words - or perhaps swallowed “it” as a poison.

Unlike children who lived in a safe place like Laval, Corona was close to the world where she cut herself off as the daughter of an adventurer. You might have understood somewhere in your head that an adventurer was "like that”, even if you didn't imagine your family would die.

One day, I stopped seeing adventurers who admired Dominic and Caterina.

Neighbors heading north of Laval Waste Town did not return.

Many people lost their arms and legs and were unable to continue their adventurers, even though their lives were saved.

It was remarkable even after Dominic started a restaurant following Katerina's dream.

I thought that the customers who went there every day had stopped coming by surprise, and they were dead.

The new adventurer who came to say hello to Dominic is gone for the first time.

This is a common occurrence, and Corona doesn't remember how many times. Dominic seemed lonely every time, but he probably had a different feeling than Corona.

Corona grew up without a word from me, seeing Dominic like that.

Spend every day with more and less adventurers and town dwellers at a restaurant that will leave three memories of my father, mother, and Corona.

Dominic had a culinary talent, and at first the crowd of adventurers expanded considerably. It was always a restaurant where adventurers, town residents, adults and children gathered.

That is the dream for Caterina - when she is immersed in "that dream”, she sometimes wants to cry asexually.

This time of year, when Katerina lost her life, it was particularly pronounced, and she was worried that she could make a smile even when she was with customers.

That's why Corona carries her feet to the cemetery in this time of year. I pray to my late mother, thinking of her face, which only exists in memory, and which will never change.

The mother's face gradually becomes blurred, either because she is older or because her memory has stopped at a young age. Even though there should have been a lot of memories, I couldn't remember them if I was careful.

When praying in front of a tombstone, the dead face of Caterina comes to mind. Even if the common memories of everyday life fade, this is not the only one.

Katerina died with a calm smile as if she had been suffering to keep Corona from worrying, but still receiving the footsteps of death.

Rather than pain, rather than fear of dying, she died laughing bitterly until the moment of her immortality, when she could not make her young daughter (Corona) cry.

--Is it okay if we keep it that way?

With that mother's dead face in mind, Corona asks herself.

When I was young, I hated monsters who took my mother's life and wanted to be an adventurer. It's about self-defense, but I've learned a little bit about fighting from Dominic.

But unlike my parents, Corona didn't have the talent to fight. Unlike my magical parents, Corona had no magic.

Of course, you can be an adventurer without magic, but even a magical caterina can kill you. Dominique, who taught him how to fight with the will of Corona, also refused to be an adventurer.

Dominic wasn't the only one who stopped. Bartolo, Nicolas, other adventurers. All the inhabitants of the town who knew Corona stopped.

There is a restaurant built by Dominic and Katerina. I was stopped from succeeding the restaurant in the future and living in peace.

― ― There is no place to look around the abandoned city of Laval, such as peace.

Of course, Corona understands. Even if I became an adventurer, I would simply lose my life quickly and leave Dominic alone.

Anyway, there is something that appeals to me as well as continuing to help Dominic. I'm learning to cook from Dominic little by little in anticipation of the future, but I wonder if that's really enough.

I want to inherit Katerina's legacy and create a restaurant where everyone can smile. But I'm worried that I can do it myself.

If you were as strong as Dominic or Katerina, you might have been an adventurer without hesitation. Still, I feel sympathetic to Dominic's "now” way of making the town's residents smile through cooking.

Your mind is in a mess, and you're upset. Corona therefore kneels before her mother's tombstone that day, asking herself prayers.

"Mother... what should I do? Is it okay if we keep this up? I'm not as strong as my father or mother... and I'm not strong enough to help someone... are you sure I can stay like this?

I grew up looking at Dominic's back, who had protected and nurtured the corona, even after losing the caterina.

I'm asexually worried whether this is okay or not.

So, I'm sure...

"I must have stayed“ back then ”... as a child who couldn't do anything ever since my mother died..."

"- No, I don't think so.

I might have been waiting for that voice to cut off my doubts.

I wondered if it would be better to shift my time to Corona, who was murmuring something with a terrible look. However, when the corona murmur was heard in the wind, Reurus's body was moving on its own.

"- No, I don't think so.

When Reurus called out, Corona raised her face as if she had been hit. You must have been so focused on praying.

"Mr. Reurus...."

"Hello, Corona. I'll disturb you."

I dare to walk along laughing casually. Behind them were Eliza, Sarah, and Meer, but Corona frowned confused to see Reurus and the others.

"That...."

"Oh, this? I gathered them around the woods."

That's how Reus lowered it to the ground in a cage of vines. There were many colorful and varied flowers thrown into the cage like mountains.

"Just before it gets cold, if you look for it, you'll find it. I was careful not to take too much....."

Laval Waste City did not sell flowers to serve as tombstones. That's why I gathered them as I looked around the woods around the abandoned city of Laval.

"Tony stopped me when I tried to get through the gate. You don't have to bother eating flowers because you're hungry..."

I wouldn't do that if I wasn't hungry for as much as a revulsion. Traditional grass used to be physically eaten, and insects and tree roots were eaten, but nostalgia does not necessarily bother to do so.

At the end of the day, I had to pay about 30% of the flowers as tax. Tony told me that he would distribute flowers for graves to the people he wanted.

"But Reurus... isn't this too much to take?

Eliza joins the conversation with a bitter smile, but holds a basket of flowers just like Reurus. Sarah and Meer were the same, and they realized that they had taken too much as a revulsion.

"That's why I thought I'd give it all to the grave markers..."

I don't think so.

"Sometimes, right? So, Corona, can I have your mother give you flowers?

Turning over the cage is an amount that can fill the roots of the tombstone. That sounds rude, but Reurus is the tombstone of the “savior of life” 's mother. Rather than the roots, you won't regret gathering the amount that will fill the entire tombstone.

"Ha, yes...."

Corona nodded in agitation as if the actions of Reurus had poked her in the face. Reus took a large flower out of the cage and placed it at the root of the tombstone. Then put your hands together to meditate, and pray for the blessings of the deceased.

"Reurus, Reurus, how do I do that?

Sarah had a strange look on her face because she didn't know how to visit the tomb. Even as a revulsion, I put my hands together unconsciously, but I don't know how to do it in this world.

"This is somehow true. If you're not rude, you can do whatever you want."

Yes!

When she heard the words of Reurus, Sarah meditated with her hands together to imitate Reurus. Eliza is poking one knee and meditating with her hands in front of her face.

"Well then, I'll be too....."

Meer barely knew Corona, but began praying for her blessings with the Reurus. Is it because I am a Spirit? I am meditating with my right hand against my chest.

Corona shook her mouth slightly as to what she thought of the Reurus, who prayed in that way.

"Thank you... thank you"

And then I got lost for a few seconds before I lowered my head.

"There aren't too many tombmarks! It's hard to give it all!?

"Even if you don't know me, it's the tombstone of" town mates "? It's gonna be tough."

"It's human custom, isn't it? We're Dwarves, we're having a banquet and mourning the dead..."

In a cemetery lined with gravemarks, Eliza's conversations were heard in the wind. While giving flowers to a nearby tombstone, Reus turned his attention to the confused corona.

The usual gentle and gentle signs linger and leave a negative impression. Reurus and the others are about to smile, but it's not going well either.

"I'm sorry for pushing you so suddenly, Corona."

"No... thank you very much. Mother would be delighted to receive so many flowers."

"It would be helpful if you said that... So, is there something wrong with you?

I can't leave the corona behind even as a revus. He would have had more than a human face, but even if he thought of his deceased mother, Corona's expression was dark.

"Do I look worried...?

"Oh, I feel so deeply rooted when I look at my usual smile."

"Smile....."

Corona smiles hauntingly at what caught her.

"... Mr. Reurus, may I ask you a question?

"Question? I don't care what you say.

Reurus laughs when he answers any question he can. I don't care how much time you spend with Corona.

"Well... what can I do?

But the question posed by Corona was very abstract. Corona herself is tilting her neck slightly because the intent of the question is unclear.

It's important to Corona, but when I opened my mouth the way I thought it would - that's where the questions popped up.

"I'm learning to cook from my father, and I can't fight like Reurus... and I think about things at this time of year. If I were as strong as my mother, I'd be different."

(I think you should talk to him like that... but you asked me because I can't talk?

With a corona that looks more serious than I thought, Reurus murmured inside. I know you don't want to worry about Dominic, but why did you choose Reurus to talk to him?

In “this world”, I felt that it was inappropriate to ask the same age heterosexual question (Reus), but if Corona asked me as Reus, I would have to answer.

"There's nothing Corona can do... she's good at cooking, she's attentive, and she can clean, wash, and do all the chores, right? Is there anything else you can do...? Imagine... that's right."

Looking back at the usual corona, Reurus spins words with frustration.

"The chef's sign girl, with a cute smile, is above all“ gentle "... yeah, that's right. Is it characteristic of being kind to everyone?

If I succeed, I may be taken for an Octopus Beauty, but Reus thinks the corona's character will be its kindness.

Maybe because it's the first “kindness” I've ever touched in this world.

"Anyone can be kind to others...."

However, the response seemed unsatisfactory to Corona. The customer's lips were sharpened as if they were stubborn, and the reaction was also novel.

"Hahaha, that's what you can say because you're Corona."

Therefore, Reurus laughs and parries. Corona said anyone could do it, but that's a big mistake.

Be kind to others - if everyone could have done that in this world, Reurus' life would have been different.

"You can be nice to someone you're close to, but it's hard to be nice to strangers. For example, getting hungry and picking up fallen suspects and helping them..."

Even from the rescued side, Reurus, I don't think I can do it.

(Even though Ooi-san said he was dying out of sight of Corona, he knew he'd help if he saw it....)

I don't think it was careless of me to help a stranger, but it saved me. As a realuse, I affirm that corona is not "something anyone can do."

"At least I was saved by that kindness. I'm living like this because I was saved... and I won't let Corona deny it."

…………

Looking straight at him, Corona lost her sight as if she had lost her word.

Look at the realuse, look at the mother's tombstone, and look at the realuse again. The figure looked like a lost child, and Reurus smiled warmly.

"Well, it hasn't been a year since we met. Try talking to him when you get home. More than me, it'll teach you so many good things about Corona."

Usually a silent Dominic, it's also clear that he values his beloved daughter, Corona. It will tell us more about the “good things” of Corona than usual.

"If you're still not convinced, why don't you do more?” You're going to support Corona, and we're going to support you. "

--If that's what you need, I'll knock you down from the front, whether you're an advanced monster or not.

As an analogy to things, Reus said, Corona pulled her lips together in a single letter.

"... so I'm not happy if Mr. Reurus gets hurt."

"Then I'll be strong enough to take him down without getting hurt."

"You could be dead...

"Don't die. What do you promise?

That's how Reurus pointed out his right pinky. Corona looks strange, but gives out her right pinkie finger to mimic Reurus.

"What is this?

"Ah... have you heard of it before? This is how you tie your little finger..."

I wonder if there was a custom of finger cutting, and the corona and little finger shake up and down in a hurry.

"I cut my finger... hah, I can't die anymore"

It's a promise to make with the savior of life. You will have to do your utmost to get home alive under any circumstances.

And the “price” is pushing the back of the corona.

All right, then, let's go do more of Corona's work.

Huh?

Reurus laughs at Corona with a strange face.

"I'm going to have dinner now, and I want you to make me a corona..." "Please, Corona."

Reurus told her to stay away, and Corona opened her eyes as if she had been stunned.

Still, after a few seconds, I had a smile from my heart that I hadn't seen in the last few days.

"I can't help it anymore... I'll ask your father."

"Please... no, I'm really looking forward to it"

Lowering your head heavily deepens Corona's smile.

One step at a time is all that matters. If that's what Corona thinks, I'd be happy to be a Reurus.

With such thoughts on the future, Reurus and the others left the cemetery behind.
