A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Episode 152: Emergency Request Part 1
What happened while I was away from the abandoned city of Laval for just one day?
Hearing that the well was running low on water, Reurus hurried to the Adventurers' Union, feeling uncomfortable.
I knew which way to go because I needed to take the monster I had hunted, but I had a hunch that something bad was happening.
"At this time of year, we had a tendency to run out of water because of the low rainfall... but this year, however, it was unusual. The amount of water has been visibly decreasing lately, even though it usually decreases more slowly."
And when she arrived at the Adventurers' Union, she asked Natalia, the receptionist.
Natalia is an impressive woman with glossy purple hair and intelligent eyes, but her expression is cloudy compared to before she went to collect food. He did not play with the smoke pipe he had always carried, but he put his hand on his mouth and raised his eyebrows.
Natalia is a very attractive woman from Reurus, and I usually think such a trick is colorful, but I can't afford to slap her lightly this time.
"Speaking of which, it certainly hasn't rained recently...."
Listening to Natalia, Reurus recalls recent events here.
In winter, it was cold every day in the morning and evening, but it was quite warm during the day due to the sunny weather. Sometimes clouds covered the sky, but it did not rain.
As an adventurer, it is better to be sunny than rain. But there will be limits to that.
People cannot live without water. As for Reurus, it feels more painful to starve, but if there is no water, we will have to die thirsty.
It's shorter than starving to death - that's what kills you in a few days.
"Of course, you won't run out of water soon. There's some water in there, and the well doesn't die quickly... but tomorrow we'll need to change the way we ask the boys."
"Tell us what we can do. If we run out of water, it's a matter of life and death."
It seems that water decreased every year during this period, and they were prepared for it. But there will be limits to what you have.
"I'd appreciate it if you said that... even if it was a favor, it wouldn't be difficult for the boys. You know there's a river to the east of town, right?
"Yeah, I've been there before, and I remember the way."
Natalia's mouth-watering river is located about an hour east of Laval Waste City.
This is where I visited under the lead of Senior Adventurer Sharon, with Eliza, who said she wanted to take a bath. The river was not so large, but it was nearly ten meters wide and the water was quite abundant.
Are you investigating? Or should I escort the town's residents to fetch water?
"Both. I'll put all the buckets and pots in the truck and get some water. The boys can leave Eliza's daughter behind in the sense of gathering the monster meat, but please make the safety of the residents a priority."
"Okay. Safety first."
Eliza, a species called the Vampire Species, does not come near any monsters classified as inferior. Face to face with an intermediate monster seems to feel some kind of crisis, and it was a good person for “avoiding monsters”.
"And I need Calvin and the others to move on the water veins around town. If we move a little, there may be plenty of water pulses flowing, and they will be able to dig wells."
"Well? Yeah, we're good at dwarfs. Leave it to me."
Natalia glances at Meer, and Meer slaps her chest with excellence.
Meer's father, Calvin, is the dwarf Leurus brought to town. He is a good blacksmith and has acquired a variety of skills besides blacksmithing. He is also an intermediate monster, but he stands up.
It would be easier to investigate alone around the abandoned city of Laval. Since there are about four dwarves in the abandoned city of Laval, apart from Meer and Calvin, it is likely that one or two water veins will be found in a short period of time if we investigate them separately.
"Is the river survey okay tomorrow? If I just wanted to check it out, I'd still be there...."
The sun is already dark, but the night journey is not so dangerous for the Reurus.
Reurus can feel the magic, and Sarah can feel the heat in a remote place like the Spirit of Fire.
In the case of Reurus, the distance you can feel will vary depending on the magic strength of the opponent, but in the case of Sarah, if she is conscious, she boasts a detection range close to a few hundred meters. Since surprise strikes can be avoided, night-time travel is not a problem.
"Didn't I tell you that water runs out this time of year? Maybe I'll be back in a few days, and no matter how many of the boys stand up, I'm not going to let them go now. Rest tight tonight."
"Okay. Then I'll ask you to redeem the monster you hunted."
Natalia's expression is more serious than usual, but it is not even stuck.
It was the first time Reurus had settled in the abandoned city of Laval in the early spring, but it seemed “usual” that water would decrease during this period.
Still, it looks different compared to the usual year, so I'll be careful to get my hands on it early - it seems to be about that level of recognition.
Reurus was convinced, and when he received the reward for hunting monsters, he left the Adventurers Association behind.
The day after dawn.
As Natalia told us last night, Reurus and the others decided to head for the river east of the abandoned city of Laval.
The amount of water in wells located throughout Laval Waste City is still decreasing, and “water supply” to each household appears to be limited.
Normally, there are only loose restrictions, such as' Don't buy too much water ', but it seems to be clear that there are limits such as how many drinks per person in a barrel.
Reurus' lifesaver, Dominique's restaurant, seems to be off limits, but still needs to be more solemn than usual.
Reurus and the others take the inhabitants of the city, loaded with buckets and pots, and walk eastward from Laval.
The four Reurus are not the only escorts. I don't think it's a problem because Eliza is here, but there are about a dozen adventurers accompanying her besides Reurus as a precaution. The river was in the woods, so one of the reasons for this was the need for vigilance personnel to pump water.
Fifty inhabitants go to the river to fetch water. Sometimes in the winter, the farming season, so the extra manpower was turned around.
Reurus stood at the beginning of the line, avoiding the monster Eliza in the middle of the line, and Sarah and Meer at the end of the line. Other adventurers walk by the side of the line, watching their surroundings.
Still, either in winter or because Reurus and the others were accompanying him, the monster never showed up until he arrived in the river. There was no sign of the monster in Reurus, and Sarah didn't seem to catch any heat.
That's how I got to the East River.
"You're running out of water...."
As I checked the arrival of the river, Reurus murmured.
I approached the river after searching for monsters, but the sound of water flowing is less than when I visited before. It was obvious that the water in the river was dwindling when I looked at it.
The width of the river, which was nearly ten meters when I visited before, has decreased to nearly half of that width, and the depth of the water has become shallow with it.
The amount of water must have been reduced by the fact that it didn't rain. The water will not wither, but it will dry up one day if it continues on days when it does not rain.
(... for now, let's go home and fetch some water and report back to Mr. Hayashi)
The nearest river to the abandoned city of Laval is the one right in front of you, so if you look for it, there must be others. If you ask Natalia, you will soon find out.
Though it might be necessary to investigate the area for a while, Reurus turned his attention to the surroundings to protect the residents who pumped the water.
Three days later.
Reus took Eliza and the others to the Adventurers' Union in the morning.
Although it rained only a little two days ago, the water in the river increased slightly and there was no major change in the water in the well. There is still a slight downward trend.
Rainwater soaked in the ground may only take time to reach the groundwater vein, but the water in the well continued to decline slowly for the past three days.
Not only the East River, but all the surrounding rivers are within walking distance. However, water is running low everywhere and the city residents were worried about the lack of water this winter.
"Sure, we're running out of water, but given the recent weather, that's probably enough. The fact that Reurus doesn't react doesn't mean that monsters are rampaging underground as usual...."
Calvin, who was searching the groundwater veins around the abandoned city of Laval, had a difficult face, but concluded that it was only a natural phenomenon.
Calvin is a dwarf and has the habit of digging holes in the ground to make a house. As a result, he was also good at exploring groundwater veins and detecting abnormalities, and his remarks were more convincing than certain.
What kind of decision will the Adventurers Association make after Calvin's report? To hear that, the Reurus are on their way to the Adventurers' Union early in the morning.
(I wonder if you can even beg for rain... no, it's a world of magic, and maybe there's magic that rains...)
If the weather were controlled, the farmers would be very happy. Reurus would be delighted, at least in this state of affairs.
Reurus opens the door of the Adventurers Association with that in mind, but feels the heavy air drifting as he takes a step inside.
There were already several adventurers in the union, each of them making a traffic surface without sighing.
"... Mr...? What the hell....."
Reurus walks in to the reception and somehow asks quietly. Natalia, who was questioned, exhaled an unusual tired sigh.
"Good morning, kid. I don't need a favor from the boys... no, I don't need a favor."
"I wonder what you're talking about when you cut yourself there...
That's why Eliza couldn't miss out on the words of Natalia. Natalia glanced at Eliza for a moment and turned her gaze to the metal plates hanging from the necks of the Reurus - the adventurer's registration cards.
"Boy, there were some privileges to being an adventurer, right? Do you remember?
"Huh? Ah, ahh... well water is free to use and a tax credit to pay, right?
"Yes... but when I give you water for free because you're an adventurer in this situation...?
"Ah...."
Having heard Natalia's story, Reurus leaked his voice convincingly. If you use water “more than you need”, you have to pay for it, but if you don't use it too much, the adventurer can basically use the well water for free.
This would be like a price for defending the city at the risk of death, but in this situation, water would not be free.
Reus is convinced that it was a dissatisfaction for the other adventurers, but Natalia shook her neck with a bitter smile.
"Oh, you're not the one who's dissatisfied. The other kids are depressed because they don't have much to do to solve this water shortage."
"... hmm?
The conversation jumped in an unexpected direction, and Reurus leaned his neck small.
"This is the situation. No one complains about taking a water tax. However, there's only so much I can do, so it's depressed... yes, except for the boys."
"If that's what you say, we might have a different job... let me ask you something."
What should I do now? What can we do to eliminate the water shortage in the abandoned city of Laval?
The monsters are blocking the water veins in the basement, so come and slaughter them - if you have such a simple request, I will slay them with joy and courage.
"Previously on Madalo Waste City," but this time I'm offering you a special assignment as the Adventurers Association of this Laval Waste City. I have a favor to ask of the boys. "
Are you telling me you're going somewhere?
Let's start by asking where. With that in mind, Natalia briefly told her where she was going.
The northernmost point of Mataroy, Lake Mersena.
