A Chronicle of Life in a Different World

Episode 155: The Leté River Part 1

"I heard it was a big river... but I didn't know it was that big."

Five days passed since we left the abandoned city of Laval.

It was a Reurus that flew as far as it could and ran along the road to the Leté River, but seeing the huge river that I saw - the Leté River - I heard a strange voice.

Eliza, Sarah, and Meer were the same, and when they noticed the far-sighted River Leté, they opened their eyes as well as their mouths.

"Hmm... it looks like it was raining well in this area. The water level in the river doesn't seem to have changed much compared to what we visited before."

Not surprisingly, Zilba was the only one who had extrapolated the recent weather from the amount of water seen in the distant Leté River.

Most of the last five days have been spent on mobility, but Zilba has no fatigue. Reurus still had plenty of room, but I couldn't say my mouth was ripped because it was as strong as Zilba.

Lucky or inevitably due to Sarah and Reurus' “search for enemies.” No monsters or bandits attacked or fought on this journey.

The physical fatigue of continuing to run with the luggage was accumulated, but it may be said that there was no mental fatigue such as tension during the battle. While adjusting the position of the shoulder strap of the backpack he was carrying, Reurus narrowed his eyes and gazed at the Leté River.

There are only a few hundred meters left to reach the Leté River, and you won't even have to run to get there. We got there so close...

"... the opposite shore is a mess."

It is a realus with clear vision that is incomparable with the previous life's decayed vision, but it was murmuring as it looked across the Leté River, which seemed thin.

Is the water covered with fog or is it purely distant? The exact distance is not known, but it appears to be at least one kilometer wide.

(Although there's less water around Laval Waste City, I wonder if there's so much water around here... no, it's not strange because we've traveled a lot of distance...)

As expected, I was resting in the middle of the night, but even after dark, I relied on the moonlight to move around. The distance traveled from the abandoned city of Laval to this place is commensurately large, as everyone in the Reurus family can use "Enhancements".

(Thinking so, this country is really big....)

He carried his luggage and kept running with minimal vigilance. The distance travelled will be slightly over a thousand kilometers.

Avoid monsters and bandits as well as soldiers patrolling the streets, sometimes going through the woods and sometimes crossing mountain paths. While resting in between, I kept running as fast as I could because it was a hurry.

If there were no luggage or equipment, and if there was no need for vigilance such as monsters, I could shorten the time a little, but it would be difficult to ask for “more” at the moment.

"Uu... I'm going to exercise even more..."

"I also... thought I was a little healthy..."

It was Meer and Eliza who were surprised at the enormity of the Leté River, but they sat on the ground and exhaled rough breath, recalling the fatigue.

No matter how much "reinforcement" can be used, fatigue does not reach zero. The longer you keep running, the more tired you get.

"Please try harder. You can get on the boat and rest as long as you want in the boat. Depending on the condition of the ship, we will be staying in Adele for a few days."

As Gilba laughed and encouraged, Eliza and Meer stood up lazily. If I could rest as a revulsion, I was tired enough to want to rest, so I understood the feelings of both of them.

"Hey, Reurus, what kind of ship is it? Are you sure you can rest?

"... I've never seen it before, so I can't say anything."

Regardless of the previous life, Reurus would see the ship for the first time in this life. For this reason, I fell in love, but there was also the possibility that Reurus would find out something completely different from the ship of the previous life.

(I don't suppose you can actually load an engine and fly it... a wooden ship? Is that how you shake it? If you get seasick, you're not going to rest....)

Reurus leans his neck inside out and wonders if he can't shake so much just down the river. Depending on the size of the ship and the speed of the river flow, it doesn't seem as comfortable as the previous ships.

(No, I also have magic equipment, and maybe it will automatically move like a previous ship.....)

I still don't know how skilled this world is, but I wouldn't be surprised if any ships were to emerge without magic.

Reurus told himself so and followed Zilba's lead to Kadare.

The fortified city of Cadare, bordering the Leté River.

Of course, Reurus was also visiting for the first time, but the town of Cadare, which he stepped into for the first time - to be precise, he tilted his neck to the atmosphere that drifted around the town.

"... isn't it different from other towns?

The houses and roads lined up are no different from the towns we've visited before. However, the atmosphere of the town was so different that such a question was immediately dispelled.

Regardless of the abandoned city, the surrounding gaze is characteristic when you step into a “peaceful town” covered with walls.

The Reurus are adventurers, but even if they go into town following proper procedures, it is a feeling of disgust from the residents. I don't know if you're a professional adventurer, but as you've seen with bandits, you're disgusted.

I don't care about Reurus if it doesn't get tangled up, but Eliza and others seem uncomfortable. But in the town of Cadare, there is no such thing.

The inhabitants of the town don't react much when they see the Reurus. Is it because Zilba is at the forefront, is it better equipped than before, or is it just because the residents are used to it?

Residents glanced at the Reurus and the others, but passed by without reacting.

"Kadare has a river port, so many people visit it compared to other towns. Residents are used to it."

"Hee... I didn't react well to the castle cities that I've entered before, so it's fresh on the contrary."

Not all residents are indifferent. Occasional gaze came in - but as soon as I checked Zilba's clothes and looked at Reurus's gear, I lost sight.

"Mr. Reurus is well equipped and I'm in this outfit. Some people think spirituals have escorts."

"... I'm having trouble responding to Jilba-san's“ guarding "."

Gilba will be on the side, not the side to be escorted. Reurus slows his pace so that Eliza and the others don't get lost.

The Great Sword, too, but all the pieces of equipment that look like leather armor next to it are Dwarves' handmade replacements. The cushioning material made from monster leather is stacked on the back of the dwarf's refined iron plate, and it is a layer of armor that appears to be leather armor by securing intermediate monster leather to the surface.

It is a practical armor without any kind of decoration, but its simplicity may have a good effect.

"Hmm... it's a vibrant town."

The people around me don't look at me, and it seems easy to live in.

"Me, this is the first time I've entered a town other than Waste City, so I can't say anything...."

Eliza and the others looked around impressed.

Regardless of Sarah, who can fight helplessly, Meer, who carries Eliza with her cane in both hands and a giant metal crowbar, occasionally looks at her without malice. There are people who open their eyes as if they had seen something unusual.

"Let's go to the river port first. We have to see when the ship leaves."

"Understood... well, it's probably too late to come here and ask, but how long does it take to get on the boat?

While walking under Zilba's lead, Reurus is conscious of his pocket wallet.

Given the possibility of purchasing water's "jewels", the “military funds” passed from Natalia cannot be used. This time, the Laval Waste City has asked me to give you some money, but if the shipping cost is too high, I will have to cut myself off temporarily.

With Gilba around, I could easily ask the price of the ship's shipment, but there was also the possibility of being called a bad opponent.

"I visited this town almost a decade ago, so it's not necessarily the same today... three gold coins or something."

"Three gold coins..."

Thinking about it in Japanese yen, is it about 300,000 yen? Maybe it's too expensive, Reurus frowns.

"Hahaha is still cheaper than the top. And I think“ we ”would be cheaper."

"What does that mean... there's a castle gate again?

He was in conversation with Gilba, but Reus tilted his neck as he saw the gate at the end of the road. The Leté River should be just a little further away.

"The Leté River leads back to La Paris and Berlido. It separates the river port from the town by a castle wall in case of an attack."

(Such a big river seems to have many tributaries.....)

Looks like we can go back to the Leté River to our neighbors. That's likely to cause defense problems, but Reurus won't mind.

It was a rhetorical revulsion, but I followed the lead of Gilba to dive through the castle gate. Unlike the fortified cities I have visited, the gates leading to the river port were open.

Naturally, when things go wrong, I will close the castle gate. However, in normal times, it seemed that the ease of passage of the town's residents and visitors to Cadare was a priority.

Beyond the castle gate was a river port, as Zilba said. Looking far away, I could see several ships.

It is not built in concrete as it was in previous generations. Its feet are as dirt as ever, and as it approaches the Leté River, it is reinforced by stone and wood, but that's all.

However, if you look to the left and right, you can see the walls protruding from the walls of Kadare to the Leté River. They must be extending the walls to protect the river port from monsters on land.

Several piers have been built in the river port, and ships are moored. A powerful voice was heard from all over the place carrying luggage and passengers, and some vessels were fishing on the Leté River or lowering fish.

Ships vary in size, with small ones being about three metres long, while large ones retain sailboats dozens of metres in size.

Particular attention was drawn to a sailboat equipped with a large sail, and the lower part of the hull seemed to be reinforced with metal, emitting a dull glow. Unnaturally, however, many holes are opening up on the side of the ship.

(You're not just sailing, you're rowing with an oar? What... ah, ah, ah, ah... ah...)

Previously on Japan - I also felt that there were such ships a long time ago than Heisei Japan. I feel like I saw it in a textbook from elementary school to junior high school, but I can't remember it clearly.

"The ship stays here today or tomorrow... so I'll negotiate with the captain."

Gilba pointed her foot at the sailboat Leurus was watching. Apparently he saw a boat going down the river by accident.

Was the timing good or bad? If there is also a spiritual church in the town of Cadare, it would be better to ask Zilba to see if there are any water magicians.

(Speaking of which, I wonder what made the fare cheaper for us... when Gilba came back?)

I caught Sarah trying to run out excited about seeing the river port for the first time and thought about it.
