A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Chapter 368: ■ ■ ■ □ □ □ □ □
Two weeks have passed since the Reurus arrived at the planned construction site in the town.
Speaking of Reurus in the meantime, he lived a life in which he woke up in the morning to eat monsters, in the morning to hunt monsters, for lunch to eat monsters, in the afternoon to hunt monsters, for dinner to eat monsters, to rest when the sun went down, to hunt monsters while falling asleep to protect Collard workers, to eat monsters when he was hungry, and to wake up after only a few hours of sleep.
Of course, don't forget to roam the monster meat in between.
It was a disturbance that a dwarf was swallowed by a black snake, but there were no injuries due to immediate rescue. Other than that, there were no monster casualties, and I could say that town building was going well.
Building materials began to be transported from neighboring territories, and houses were being built only marginally in view of the size of the town's grounds.
There are five of them. The walls are constructed from the soil used to make the empty moat, and the exterior of the house, which uses wood only for pillars and roofs, is poor.
It didn't matter that there was no base for living, and based on Collard's judgment that “decent” houses should be built later, he prioritized the number of houses.
However, it was the dwarves who made the appearance poor. The solid and firm earth wall was sturdy and strong enough not to break easily even when touched by humans.
However, there is not enough space for all over a hundred workers to sleep, so we will increase the number of houses from time to time as materials arrive. Until then, the tent used until now will also remain.
The place where the house was built is in the heart of a town that is planning to build a Natalian mansion in the future. Since we first built an empty moat and set up earthen walls, we were in the process of shaping it as a living center where we could live with peace of mind while passing the rain and wind.
The empty moat is deeper and larger, three meters wide and one and a half meters deep. The earth wall also had a thickness and height of nearly two meters, making it robust enough for people to ride it without breaking down.
Also, since we made a jump bridge out of excess wood, if we raise the bridge, it will not be easy to break into it, even if it is a monster.
In the future, I was going to make the moat a little wider and put some water in it so that the monsters couldn't jump over it. If you're in a water moat, you'll be more likely to notice a black snake that you haven't seen recently as it approaches.
In doing so, Reurus, who had built a small fortress, was concentrating on the tasks assigned to each.
The busiest of them is probably Reurus. Eliza and the others are taking turns resting, but Reurus is running around like a fish with water and hunting monsters.
They also cut trees with the dwarves, stepped into the woods around town and checked the vegetation, and lived a busy day.
Of course, the answer is no as to whether others are busy or not. Compared to shortly after arriving at the planned construction site of the town, it was clear that the monsters were attacking less frequently, so each of them was concentrating on their work.
The dwarves are splitting up in pairs, encouraging empty moats and earthen walls to surround the town. One digs the ground, one consolidates the soil, and one guards against monsters coming from the forest.
Each dwarf is an Enhancer, with high power and health. Even though the efficiency of the work has dropped due to vigilance, we still built nearly 50 meters of empty moats per group per day.
For the first time, an empty moat of about one meter in width and depth is constructed, and the walls are constructed from the soil that comes out at that time. Thus, an empty moat and earthen walls were set up around the whole town, and as soon as possible, the “body” of the town was about to be arranged.
We make about ten pairs of three people and engage in building empty moats and earthen walls, but it takes time for dwarfs to build something the size of a "fort” in the center of town. Moreover, the moat is large and deep because it touches the forest, and the earth walls are high and sturdy, so you won't be able to feel safe.
It would take at least six months if it were simple enough to prevent the intrusion of non-flyable monsters.
--Instead, Collard and others were complaining that it might take six months to complete.
And of the remaining dwarves, about a dozen fell into the forest. Sometimes the town and the forest are too close, but at the same time cutting off the monster habitat will also help secure timber. You can't use a freshly cut tree, but if you take the time to dry it, it will be a fine piece of wood.
In that case, the dwarves were encouraging the felling of the forest with axes in one hand.
However, when the tree is cut, a flashy sound is made, attracting monsters. As a result, ten people worked together, and when they cut the trees, Reurus and the others also participated as escorts.
Reurus suggested slashing the tree using Dragon Slash while using "Caloric Release", and actually tried it, but it became a feather that was interrupted on the way.
Too many trees were slashed, but the slashed trees fell out of order, making digging back the roots of the trees very cumbersome. It was wasteful to move the cut tree, so the dwarves took the lead in cutting the tree.
Finally, the rest of the dwarfs and the adventurers and workers of the abandoned city of Laval are “leveling" the town's grounds. In parallel, we are also working on the actual construction of towns, including where to build houses, what to do with roads, and how many ditches to drain when it rains.
In addition, work was being carried out in parallel to dig up part of the town's site and convert it into a field. Even if we have houses for people to live in, moats and walls that do not attract monsters, we cannot do anything unless we produce enough food to live on.
In this way, everyone encourages work, buys materials and food from merchants who visit from time to time, and the construction of towns progresses. Not to say that the wind is full, but it can be said that the construction of the town is proceeding at a fairly high pace.
But I was a little worried about Reurus.
(I know the land is full of monsters... but why did your “predecessor” fail to build the town?
As a result of living on Montrat's land for the past two weeks or so, such a question arose.
I'm not proud of it, but I'm sure it's pretty good in terms of combat power. It must also be significant that there are many participants who strike at work efficiency like heavy machinery, even though they are small subordinates called dwarves.
I have received support from neighboring lords, but the cost of materials and food is enough to get my change back with the monster materials I have hunted so far.
(Some intermediate monsters are like black snakes and bears, but there are fewer than junior monsters... black snakes anyway, bears are still an easier category to deal with...)
Why did those who tried to develop this land fail before? I heard that monsters attack too frequently, but is that really it?
(Hmm... I don't know... I don't think it's a bad location to build a town.)
With that in mind, Reurus turned his gaze. It was not as large as the planned construction site of the town, but it had a fairly large flat area. By the way, trees grow everywhere, but it is a flat land with an area of about a few baseball fields.
There are about three similar sites within a 10-minute walk of the planned construction site of the town, and since the river is also close, it is likely to be used as a field if the waterway is pulled.
Of course, you won't be able to use it as a field unless you start making earth, but if you pull out the trees dotted there and plow the ground, you'll be able to use it as a field enough.
We would need more expansion to cover the food of all the inhabitants of the abandoned city of Laval, but I felt that we could do something about it if we took the trajectory from Reurus, who once lived as a serf.
(I don't think there was a shortage of materials to build such a fine sewer... is it because of the monster?
As a sewer, they dug holes in the basement of the town's planned construction site, reinforced it with stone, and built it so that it could actually run water. Is there “something” you need to throw it out and make a decision to retreat?
Were there monsters so powerful that they could not continue exploring, or were they pushed by numbers that they could no longer compete? Although there is a difference in skill, unlike the Reurus, who can fight more than 70% of those who participate in town building, did their predecessors not have that much power?
(That black snake is intermediate and the bear is intermediate and lower... “Not enough” after all)
I don't even think that there are advanced monsters lurking, but it's not strange that there are monsters as troublesome as Kimira. But does not encounter mean that the habitat is different?
"What are you thinking?
Reurus was thinking as he looked around the plains that would become a town field in the future, but Eliza noticed it and looked at her strangely.
"No... people who tried to build a town in that place before wondered why they gave up. I heard there are a lot of monsters out there, but you don't see any strong monsters, do you?
"... I don't think it would make a lot of noise just because of the intermediate monsters."
Eliza has far-sighted eyes, but she immediately swings her head and switches her mind.
"I mean, what... does Reurus think it's natural to have stronger monsters?
"I've encountered advanced monsters many times before... I wouldn't be surprised if I came out. No, I don't want you to come out..."
Had it been before, even a single Reurus would have been able to deal with it if it had the power of the current state of affairs, like the "castle collapse". It's up to luck to win one-on-one when the Head Hunt comes out, but with Eliza's help, we can still do something about it.
When the slime comes out, depending on the size, there is no choice but to run away. If Vanille comes out, I have no choice but to tell him to go back to the Veos volcano.
"Well... I wonder why I've encountered several advanced monsters in about a year..."
"For now, it's not my fault... maybe... I just don't feel the strong magic, Sarah didn't search for the heat source, and it's okay if it's my fault."
It may not be that there is no such thing as a "lord of territory”, such as Vanier, who lives in the volcano of Veos, or Axis, who lives in the great forest of Lille - but it is not necessarily there.
"It's your fault... if your predecessor gave up after being attacked by an advanced monster, you still have information around here, right?
"That's right... if you don't have that kind of information, you just couldn't protect yourself because there were so many monsters..."
I won't be alarmed, but I won't have to be more careful than necessary.
Reurus, who had concluded so, smiled too much.
"... there are people who look terrible."
The next day, as the monsters around the town were decreasing, Reurus walked a little further into the woods and murmured as he watched from afar.
The planned fields around the town have been surveyed, and the dwarves have been cut out for future use, so we were looking for “other materials” to go through the woods.
"I don't know the exact number because there's a distance and I'm“ in and out ”of the range where I can feel the heat... ten... twenty?
"As far as I can see... I don't know the exact number, so I can't get into a loose end..."
In response to Sarah's words, Reurus narrowed his eyes to find out a little more.
Distant, "flying around the sky" swarms of monsters each have more than three meters of body and wings grown from their backs.
The lower body is as strong as a lion, while the upper body is completely a bird - a prey. The front leg is unexpectedly developed as a normal bird and is close to a winged dragon that I have seen before.
Eliza and the others were distorting their faces as they stared at the distance.
"There was a monster that seemed really powerful... it certainly didn't seem like an advanced monster, but it definitely wasn't a junior monster..."
"... full"
Eliza murmured in amazement, and Neddy counted the monsters and voiced her feelings invisible.
"I've never seen anything like it before... Griffon?
Then Mia suddenly murmured as Reurus and the others were talking. Hearing that, Reurus leans his neck and sees Meer without being sure.
"You know what?
"I've heard about it from my father, but it's probably characteristic of the appearance...."
"... strength?
"... intermediate to upper?
Hearing the words of such a Meer, Reurus once again saw a herd of Griffons, monsters that seemed as far away as they could see.
Griffons are flying around the rocky mountains that are more than an hour's walk from the town they're building. It is tall enough to look up, and although trees grow everywhere, most of them are covered in gray rock.
The Griffons flew around the rocky mountains without showing the appearance of going far away. Maybe the Iwayama area is a territory.
"... let's leave once."
If there are a few, I can't do it if I become a group of intermediate monsters that is likely to exceed twenty if I succeed.
The Reurus left the scene, taking care not to be distracted by the opponent.
