A Chronicle of Life in a Different World
Episode 382: The Fallen Monster
Since the monsters disappeared from the surroundings of the town, there has been a change in the work carried out by the Reurus.
Until then, be careful not to get too far from town, check the surrounding terrain and vegetation, and find the monster and move on to elimination. It was repeated every day.
However, if the threat of monsters is reduced, it is no longer necessary for the Reurus to operate while being careful not to leave town too far.
Therefore, after a few days of observing the situation and confirming that the monsters were not coming back, Reurus and the others embarked on an investigation into Baron Amendura's “Deep Land” more than ever before.
The Baron of Amendura - formerly known as Montrat - is a vast area.
“Normal” walking takes about five days from the east to the west, and five days to a week from the north to the south.
The town currently under construction by the Reurus is located in the north of Baron Amendura's territory. The combination of the streets leading to the neighboring territory, the location of the water source, and the size of the land suitable for cultivation make it natural, but it is only a small part of Baron Amondola's territory as a whole.
The map of the entire territory is not complete in detail, we don't know where in the territory what resources are sleeping, and we don't have that much information on the status quo.
We also need to investigate the whereabouts of monsters who escaped from the vicinity of the town under construction. So Reus took Eliza and the others south of town, and began an investigation into Baron Amendura's territory.
“Normal” walking takes a reasonable amount of time, but the Reuses are all able to move with "Enhancements", so they can move at a certain speed. The lack of roads leads us to run through the woods, but it's the earliest we've ever been used to for Reurus.
Though poorly maintained, streets also exist. However, it was laid in a north-south direction to separate Baron Amendura's territory from the neighboring territory, and there is no road leading to the “interior” other than the town currently under construction.
For this reason, Reurus and the others kept moving along the routes Collard had filled out in the map as far as possible, while also exploring routes that might be suitable for building roads in the future.
It was the Reurus who proceeded with the investigation from the north to the south of Baron Amondola's territory, but compared to the beginning of the development, they did not encounter monsters as exciting as possible.
Of course, it is not zero, but it is rarely encountered due to the depth of the forest, and only about ten animals are seen in one day.
The majority of low-level monsters encounter monsters that are likely to pose an intermediate or higher threat. Never encountered a disappearing Griffon from around Iwayama, the investigation was proceeding smoothly enough for Reurus to tilt his neck.
(Has he lurked somewhere, or has he fled farther away... if he had made a new territory, the junior monster would have disappeared from there and escaped after all?
While following Meer's lead in the woods, Reurus leans his neck inside out.
Calvin and Dwarf, who confirmed the Griffon that Leurus took down, said that only young individuals remained.
Experienced and cautious, Griffons abandoned their territory around Iwayama, and fearless young Griffons did not flee - as many young individuals as could be inferred.
I have to assume that Calvin and the others speculate from Reurus, who doesn't know his age even when he looks at Griffon's face and body.
Young individuals, such as magic dogs, sometimes came alone to try their courage, but something similar happened.
But then where did the rest of the Griffons escape? That is the problem.
Fortunately, as long as we talk to the people who bring the materials to the town we're building, it doesn't seem that there has been any unnatural increase in monsters in the neighboring territory. There is no rumor that they have discovered a herd of Griffons, and it appears that they have never engaged soldiers patrolling the territory.
Then Griffon and the other monsters didn't split up and flee to the east and west, but to the south.
First he fought Kimira right next to the town, then he rampaged Griffons and other monsters around Mount Iwayama, about an hour south of the town. There is a good chance that they “pushed" us further south.
Coming south through Baron Amendura's territory, there are borders that lead to other countries such as Tillier and Polasha.
(You can't even go to another country to check...)
Perhaps the escaped monster has moved to another country. If you think so, you'll be impatient as a revulsion, but you can't just take the momentum of the investigation and fall into the avalanche of another country.
Also, I don't think the opponent will believe that the monsters fled in large quantities due to fighting humans.
(If we find a Griffon or something, it's still different...)
Other monsters don't know, and the Griffons can fly in the sky, leaving little trace of movement. It would be a very difficult monster to track.
(Hmm... it looks like there's a fort near the border, and if Griffon escapes, it'll be rumored to be in the eyes of the soldiers...?
Looking at the map, it appears that there is a fortress near the southernmost part of Baron Amendura's territory - borders with other countries - where the national army can be stationed.
It is safer to get to the fort by passing through streets in other territories, but once the streets in Baron Amedora's territory are developed, you will be used. We don't know how many years or decades from now.
It was the Reurus who proceeded with the investigation of Baron Amondola's territory, but the other monsters, anyway, ended up not knowing where Griffon was.
The Griffon investigation conducted by Reurus and the others is not good, but the investigation itself in Baron Amendura's territory is well under way.
And it is the construction of the town that is progressing more well than the investigation of the Reurus.
The Reurus return to town on a roughly day-trip, and even if they travel long distances, they return to town in two days per night. And just a few hours away, I was able to understand the change in town.
As the threat of monsters diminishes, the pace of work of workers such as dwarfs increases, becoming more and more "town-like”.
The empty moat built around the town in the first month increases in width and depth from the edge.
Due to the soil that emerged when the empty moat was spread out, the soil wall separating the town from the outside became thicker and taller.
Inside the town, the roads and residential areas have been roughly divided, and the rest are actually starting work to move forward.
I've come all the way here.
Toilets and wells are being built at equal intervals throughout town, and living conditions are being improved.
The positional relationship of the sewer was also considered for wells, which were also drilled deeply to prevent contamination by sewage. The interior of the well is reinforced by stone material, and it is to be careful to clean the water by installing stone material engraved with the "magic letter" of "detoxification".
With regard to housing, there is not much progress because of the scarcity of building materials, but the work will proceed at a rapid pitch once dry wood is available. Until then, it was true that the focus was on non-residential areas.
As the work progresses, Collard will be the busiest.
Check how far work is progressing in each location, check that there is no deviation from the town's "blueprints”, and also check the physical and mental condition of the workers.
Manage the food and materials currently stored in the town, respond if there are people who bring the materials, and order if there is anything missing.
In addition, he worked so hard that he could not complain about dealing with the problems brought in by Reurus.
Rather than being able to cope with the stack of work, ordinary people will be exhausted in the first few days. It was the earliest homicidal workload.
"It's been less than a year since we started work, but I don't think we should go this far... enough to show it to the court nobles."
But Collard could not afford to laugh satisfactorily as he watched the changing city day by day.
It was an extremely busy workload, but it was more fulfilling and rewarding than ever. The presence of an unexpected workforce for Collard, Dwarf, is driving town building at a rate that is likely to engrave the name in Mataroi's history.
In addition, Dwarves and Laval Waste City workers, who initially did not listen honestly, have gradually become more cooperative by living together.
Collard raised his eyebrows in his heart that new problems had arisen because the town was full of wind and sails.
If the town continues to be built, many people will be able to live in the near future. There are no problems with housing, as the dwarves build their houses in no time when the materials are ready.
The insecurity caused by the monsters initially feared is not a problem as far as the current situation is concerned. Rather, the impact of the revulsion was too rampant, leaving too much material for the monsters to deal with even with merchants.
But it is. “Boxes” are by no means enough for people to live in.
(It's a luxurious worry that the town is built too fast to make fields,....)
Naturally, people need food to live. Currently, food is brought in with materials with support from other places, so there is no problem, but if we live independently, food is absolutely necessary.
We are building fields inside the town, but we are only in the process of making earth. Although we are trying to plant potatoes to grow even if the land has been destroyed, however good the harvest is, given the area of the field, it is clearly “insufficient”.
Nearby in town, there is some land that seems suitable for fields, but there is no turning back. Even with the help of the dwarves, we won't be able to live a life of self-sufficiency for the time being.
(Still, town building itself is going well... hmm... what's the matter...)
Town building is progressing many times faster than expected, but the damage is caused by the death. Collard acknowledged (sent) a letter, which he decided would be problematic in the near future, although he still managed to do something about it now.
Nearly two months have passed since the start of town building. Because of the distance from the abandoned city of Laval, I was unable to reach you easily, but I had to report regularly. We must also communicate the problem to Natalia.
People who are sure to arrive in the abandoned city of Laval, do not take long to travel, and can report to Natalia.
It wasn't one of Collard's men, but he was part of the town building.
"... so I left it to you."
"Roger that. Leave it to me."
As the threat of monsters has diminished, so has the need to keep them for town building. The work is progressing, but reporting is more important this time.
At Collard's discretion, the Reus temporarily returned to the abandoned city of Laval.
