Chapter 129: The Dungeon Boss
Chapter 129: The Dungeon Boss
Darkness waited on the other side of the massive stone door.
For several seconds, neither Andras nor Romeo moved. The pressure spilling from the chamber beyond was heavier than anything they had felt so far—not merely the presence of a strong monster, but something denser, as though the mana itself had been compressed into the space ahead. Even the blue crystal light from the outer chamber seemed reluctant to cross the threshold.
A deep growl rolled out of the dark.
Romeo tightened his grip on his sword. "Something is coming."
Andras did not answer. Through Echo Resonance, he could already feel it—the slow, deliberate movement of a large body, the dense circulation of mana beneath stone-like hide, the controlled weight of each step. The vibration was heavier than any Grayclaw they had faced. Cleaner. More intentional.
A massive figure emerged.
It stood nearly three meters tall. Dark gray scales covered its body like natural armor, thick muscles shifting beneath the plating with every movement. Two large horns curved backward from its head. Its arms were unnaturally long, ending in enormous claws that could tear through stone. Crimson eyes locked onto them with clear predatory focus.
Andras activated the system at once.
[Name: Stonehorn Ravager]
[Rank: Class B]
[Talent: Earthshatter (B-Rank)]
Andras’s eyes narrowed.
A Class B monster.
Stronger than anything they had encountered so far.
The Stonehorn Ravager took another step forward. The ground cracked beneath its foot.
Romeo swallowed. "That’s considerably stronger than the others."
"Yes."
"Can we beat it?"
Andras kept his eyes on the creature. "We’ll find out."
The Ravager exploded forward with startling speed.
Andras’s eyes narrowed. "Move!"
The monster closed the distance in an instant and smashed its fist into the floor. Stone exploded outward. Fragments tore through the air like shrapnel. Andras twisted aside cleanly, coat snapping with the motion. Romeo was less fortunate—a shard struck his shoulder and sent him stumbling backward with a sharp intake of breath.
The Ravager turned toward him at once.
Andras moved.
Sovereign Predator Physique activated in a controlled surge. Strength, speed, and recovery sharpened as his body adapted to the threat. The world seemed to slow by a fraction—not true time dilation, but the heightened clarity of a predator locking onto prey. At the same time, Echo Resonance spread outward, mapping the dense flow of mana beneath the Ravager’s scales, the tension in its limbs, the brief lag between intent and motion.
Andras closed the distance without wasted movement and cut across the monster’s arm using the opening form of Black Thorn Sword Style. The blade traced a sharp, piercing line rather than a heavy cleave, seeking the seam between armor plates. The impact rang out with a metallic note. The hide was denser than expected, but the precise angle still left a shallow cut that darkened quickly with blood.
The Ravager swung its other arm in a wide arc. Andras ducked beneath the claws, stepped inside its reach, and drove his sword into the softer junction beneath the side plating. Dark blood welled from the wound and spattered across the stone.
The monster roared. Mana surged violently through its body, the blue crystal lines under its scales flaring brighter for an instant.
"Romeo!"
"I know!"
Romeo raised his hand. Mana Compression activated. The surrounding energy rapidly densified around his palm until the air itself seemed to tighten. The Ravager charged Andras, its enormous fist descending like a falling boulder. Andras leapt backward as Romeo released the compressed blast.
The impact struck the monster’s side and hurled its massive frame several meters into the wall. Stone cracked, and dust rained from the ceiling. Romeo exhaled hard, already breathing more heavily.
"We hurt it."
Andras watched the creature carefully. "It barely felt that."
The Stonehorn Ravager pushed itself upright. The wound on its side was already beginning to close, scales knitting with unnatural speed. Regeneration. Not instantaneous, but fast enough to erase lesser injuries if the fight dragged on too long.
The monster slammed both fists into the ground. The entire chamber shook. Cracks spiderwebbed across the floor in jagged lines. Through Echo Resonance, Andras felt mana flooding downward into the stone, spreading outward like roots seeking weak points.
"Jump!"
Both of them leapt as stone spikes erupted from the ground. Sharp pillars of rock punched upward where they had been standing. One narrowly missed Romeo’s leg as he twisted in midair and landed several meters away, rolling once before coming up in a ready stance.
"What was that?"
"Earthshatter," Andras said. "It channels mana into the surrounding earth and reshapes it."
Romeo’s expression hardened. "Then we can’t stay grounded for long."
"We have no choice."
The Ravager charged again. Andras moved to intercept, deliberately drawing its attention away from Romeo. Sovereign Predator Physique pushed his acceleration higher. Echo Step flared in combination with it, his body blurring as he slipped past the first swipe of claws. The second attack came immediately after, a sweeping backhand meant to catch him mid-movement. He tilted his frame just enough for the claws to graze his coat, then answered with a mid-form Black Thorn thrust—narrow, penetrating, aimed at the gap beneath the chest plating. Blood sprayed across his blade. The Ravager roared and slammed a fist toward him. Andras raised his sword to catch the force, but the impact still drove him backward, boots carving shallow lines into the stone.
Physically, the creature still outclassed him in raw mass and impact.
Direct exchanges would only favor it.
Andras adjusted.
He began giving ground deliberately, forcing the Ravager to overextend. One strike. Two. Three. Each time he retreated just far enough to avoid a clean hit while Echo Resonance tracked the flow of its mana in real time. The more aggressive the monster became, the clearer its pattern grew. Every time it prepared to use Earthshatter, mana gathered first around its legs before flooding into the ground. That transition created a brief, readable window.
There.
The Ravager stomped. Mana rushed downward. Andras was already moving before the spikes erupted. He appeared at the monster’s flank as the ground behind him exploded into a forest of stone spears.
"Now!"
Romeo understood instantly. He compressed his mana to a tighter density than before, the air around his hand distorting slightly under the pressure. Andras struck the Ravager’s knee with a low Black Thorn cut, the piercing angle biting deeper than a normal slash would have managed against the reinforced hide. The monster’s balance shifted. Romeo released the blast point-blank into its chest.
The detonation threw the monster into the wall hard enough to crack the stone behind it in a spreading web. Scales split open across its torso. Dark blood ran from its mouth in a thick line. Romeo’s breathing was growing heavier, the cost of repeated high-density compression beginning to show.
"We actually hurt it."
Andras did not lower his sword. "It’s still standing."
The Stonehorn Ravager pushed itself away from the wall. Its crimson eyes burned with rage. The mana around its body thickened suddenly, denser and more unstable than before, as though it were forcing more power through a damaged frame.
Andras felt the change at once. "Romeo. Get back."
The Ravager opened its mouth and roared. The chamber trembled. Then the ground beneath Andras collapsed. For a moment there was nothing under his feet—only a sudden drop into open dark. He fell several meters before catching the broken edge with one hand. Below him stretched a deeper void, the blue crystal light unable to reach its bottom.
"Andras!"
Romeo rushed forward. The Ravager intercepted him with a horizontal sweep of its claws. Their weapons met with a heavy clash that threw Romeo across the floor. He rolled, came up on one knee, and released another compressed burst just in time to halt the monster’s advance. The blast staggered the Ravager for a critical half-second. Andras used that window to pull himself up, Sovereign Predator Physique already compensating for the strain burning through his arm and shoulder, and re-entered the fight without hesitation.
They attacked together.
Andras targeted the legs and joints, using Echo Step and the piercing angles of Black Thorn Sword Style to stay inside the creature’s reach without remaining there long enough to be caught. Echo Resonance guided every placement of his blade toward the weaker seams in its armor, the places where the dense mana flow thinned for a fraction of a second during movement. Romeo focused on heavy compressed impacts to disrupt its balance and interrupt Earthshatter before it could fully form. The Ravager’s movements were slowing. Blood loss and accumulated damage were finally telling. Its regeneration could not keep pace with wounds opened faster than they could close.
Andras cut across its thigh, the Black Thorn edge biting deep enough to compromise the limb. Romeo’s next blast struck its chest and forced it to one knee. Andras stepped in, layered Echo Resonance into the blade until it hummed with focused vibration, and drove a reinforced Black Thorn thrust through its abdomen.
The Stonehorn Ravager froze.
Blood poured from the wound in a heavy sheet. Its massive frame began to collapse. Andras pulled his blade free as the creature dropped fully to one knee, claws scraping weakly against the stone, head hanging low.
Romeo lowered his hand, breathing hard. "It’s finished."
Andras watched the monster carefully. Its breathing had grown weak and uneven. One more clean strike would end it.
He raised his sword—
Then stopped.
A faint vibration moved through the air behind him.
Not from the Ravager.
Not from the dungeon walls.
From Romeo.
Echo Resonance sharpened instantly, stripping away every other sensation. Mana was being compressed again—tight, focused, and directed with clear intent.
Toward him.
Andras turned his head slowly.
Romeo stood several meters behind him, one hand raised, compressed mana already swirling densely around his palm. The glow of it lit the lower half of his face. For the first time since they entered the dungeon, Romeo smiled.
