Chapter 92 - 91 A Logical Deduction
*** ALISTAIR ***
Some women imagine themselves wearing a crown. My wife apparently spends her free time imagining her husband eloping with other men.
I stand in the center of the plush bedroom and stare at Emily. She stands near her glass vanity table in her damp silk robe. She looks incredibly serious. She just accused Warren Sinclair, a ruthless billionaire casino owner, of harboring a secret romantic obsession with me.
The sheer absurdity of the accusation hangs heavily in the cool, climate-controlled air.
Then, the sudden realization hits me. Her wild accusation does not stem from genuine professional concern. It stems from a very specific, highly colorful corner of internet culture.
"You possess a deeply twisted mind, Emily," I say. I let a slow, mocking smile form on my lips. "You look entirely innocent standing there with your wet hair and your white silk robe. But you are secretly hoarding a wildly inappropriate imagination."
Emily freezes. The hand holding her wooden hair comb stops entirely in mid-air. A bright, aggressive flush of pink creeps rapidly up her neck and settles high on her pale cheeks.
I take a slow step closer to her. I cross my arms over my chest. I decide to press my advantage and watch her squirm.
"I have seen the colorful covers of the graphic novels you read in the library," I continue. My voice is thick with amusement. "You consider yourself a veteran of those animated Japanese shows where people get transported to other worlds. Isekai, I believe you called it. I simply did not realize your extensive consumption of fantasy media included pairing your husband off with his wealthy male business partners."
"I am not a fujoshi!" Emily snaps loudly.
She grips the wooden comb so tightly her knuckles turn completely white. The defensive volume of her voice betrays her complete guilt. And the fact that she even knows that term makes it all the more amusing.
"I am simply making a highly logical deduction based on his obsessive stalking," she insists. She points a bandaged finger at me. "He hides in the shadows of a restaurant to take pictures of us. That is not normal executive behavior."
"A logical deduction," I repeat. I let out a dark, rich laugh. "You just accused two grown men of conducting a secret, illicit romance behind your back because one of them took a photograph. You are completely projecting your weird fictional tropes onto my actual life."
"I am going to sleep," Emily announces.
She refuses to admit defeat. She turns her back to me and starts brushing her wet hair with highly aggressive, violent strokes. She pulls the wooden comb through her dark tangles as if she is preparing for actual combat.
I watch the smooth movement of her shoulders under the silk fabric. The playful amusement slowly drains out of my system. The joke is over. The heavy, possessive anger I felt in the study returns with a vicious vengeance. I have a much more pressing issue to address tonight, and I refuse to let her deflect my attention.
I drop my arms to my sides. I close the remaining distance between us. I stop right behind her velvet stool. I look directly into her dark eyes through the reflection of the large vanity mirror.
"Let us return to the actual problem," I say. My tone drops the playful teasing entirely. It becomes a low, demanding rasp. "What exactly did you discuss with Victor Sterling tonight?"
Emily stops brushing her hair. She meets my gaze in the glass. Her expression instantly transforms into a blank, unreadable mask.
"We discussed cardiovascular manufacturing timelines," she replies smoothly.
"Do not lie to me, Emily," I warn her softly. I place my hands on the back of her velvet stool. I lean down slightly, bringing my face closer to hers in the mirror. "A ruthless corporate shark does not look at a woman with pure, undivided reverence because she quoted a supply chain timeline. He looked at you like you just handed him the absolute keys to the universe. What exactly did you promise him?"
Emily sets the wooden comb down on the glass tabletop. The hollow thud echoes loudly in the quiet room.
She stands up. She turns around and faces me directly. She has to tilt her head back to meet my eyes, but she does not look intimidated in the slightest. She looks completely unbothered by my demanding tone.
"That is a corporate secret," Emily states flatly.
She steps around me. She walks calmly across the thick carpet toward the massive four-poster bed. She pulls the heavy white down comforter back with her bandaged hands. She climbs onto the mattress and settles comfortably against the plush pillows.
"Goodnight, Alistair," she says.
She reaches out and clicks off the small brass bedside lamp.
Half the room plunges into deep shadow. I stand perfectly still near the vanity table. My jaw tightens so fiercely that my teeth grind together.
Her absolute refusal to answer me pours an entire gallon of gasoline directly onto my burning curiosity. The mystery is a physical itch under my skin. I need to know exactly how she manipulated a man like Victor Sterling into absolute submission. I need to know what kind of leverage she currently holds in her damaged hands.
I turn around. I do not walk toward the bedroom door. I walk directly toward the massive walk-in closet located on the far side of the suite.
I push the heavy oak door open and step inside. I shut it firmly behind me, ensuring the thick wood blocks out any sound.
The closet is the size of a small luxury apartment. Pristine, bright LED lighting illuminates rows of custom mahogany shelving, glass display cases, and hundreds of tailored suits. The air smells strongly of expensive leather and dry cedar.
I pull my black smartphone from my tuxedo pocket. The screen illuminates my face in the dim corners of the room. I unlock the device and open my contacts. I tap the call button next to Warren Sinclairโs name.
I hold the phone to my ear. I pace slowly down the center aisle of the closet. The line rings three times.
"I was wondering how long it would take you to call," Warren answers. His deep voice is incredibly smug. I can practically hear the arrogant smirk on his face.
"You have exactly ten seconds to explain your profound lack of professional judgment," I say coldly. I run my free hand through my hair. "Why are you taking stealth photographs of my wife inside your restaurant?"
"I was simply providing a valuable surveillance service for a friend," Warren replies. I hear the soft clink of ice hitting crystal in the background. He is still drinking. "You warned me to stay away from her. You said she was dangerous. I was just confirming your hypothesis. She is currently recruiting an army, Alistair. And her new general is completely obsessed with her."
"I do not need you to monitor my wife," I snap. My voice echoes harshly against the wooden shelves. "You invaded her privacy. You interrupted her business meeting. She is entirely furious with you, and she is currently demanding a formal apology."
Warren laughs. It is a rich, highly entertained sound. "She told me to take my expensive drink and get out. She didnโt even blink. I have never been dismissed so casually in my entire life. She is a magnificent creature."
My grip on the phone tightens painfully. Hearing another man praise her brilliance sparks a violent, territorial rage in my chest.
"She is my wife," I remind him. The threat in my tone is unmistakable. "Keep your distance from her, Warren. Do not approach her table again. Do not speak to her unless she initiates the conversation. Do I make myself absolutely clear?"
"Crystal clear," Warren says smoothly. He is not intimidated, but he recognizes a genuine boundary when I draw one. "I will keep my distance. But you cannot protect her from the rest of the city. Victor Sterling is just the beginning. The Monroe family will notice her very soon."
"I will handle the Monroes," I state. "Tell me exactly what you heard tonight. What did she say to him?"
"I heard nothing," Warren admits. His tone turns slightly serious. "The acoustic paneling in those VIP booths is completely soundproof. But I saw his face. Whatever she sold him, he bought the entire inventory. You need to secure your grip on her, Alistair. Because if you let her go, she is going to conquer this entire city without you."
The call disconnects.
I lower the phone. I stare blankly at a row of pristine silk ties.
Warren is right. She is building a fortress. She is quietly assembling the weapons and the allies she needs to become entirely independent. If I do not figure out exactly what she is planning, I am going to lose her.
