A lie spoken in a tailored suit is still just a lie.

Julian still stands directly in the dimly lit hallway of Bordeaux 101. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers overhead illuminates his perfect, arrogant features. He just called my life a petty, low-class gang war. He just accused me of hurting my treacherous stepsister and my entire family, when they’re the one’s who hurt me first. The sheer audacity of his words strikes a completely raw, unprotected nerve deep within my chest.

The ambient noise of the luxury restaurant fades away entirely. The musical clinking of expensive wine glasses and the soft, rhythmic saxophone melody disappear from my awareness. The rich aroma of roasted garlic and seared wagyu beef turns to ash in my nose. My mind drags me violently backward in time.

** Three years ago ***

A torrential, freezing downpour soaked the municipal cemetery. The smell of wet, overturned earth and decaying white lilies filled the frigid air. I stood entirely alone in a cheap, soaking wet black dress next to my grandmother’s open grave. My father, Thomas Vance, stood ten feet away under a massive, golf-sized black umbrella. Lydia Vance stood beside him, complaining loudly about the mud ruining her imported designer shoes. They didn’t shed a single tear.

They refused to pay for my medical school tuition that very same afternoon. They sat in their pristine living room and officially cut off my funding. They forced me to drop out of the only program that mattered to me. They treated my grandmother’s death as a highly convenient excuse to discard my future and prioritize Chloe.

I walked out of their house and stood in the freezing rain. I possessed absolutely nothing. I possessed no family, no money, and no prospects. My entire world had collapsed into a cold, wet puddle.

Then, Julian appeared.

He stepped out of a sleek black town car. He walked through the muddy grass in his expensive leather shoes. He held a large umbrella over my head, shielding me from the violent storm. He smelled of spicy cedar cologne and absolute, undeniable security. He offered me a warm wool coat. He offered me a completely safe harbor. He looked at my tear-stained face and promised to protect me. He became my entire salvation in a world designed to crush me.

That salvation was a complete, calculated illusion. The devastation of his betrayal is a permanent, jagged scar across my timeline. To date, I don’t know why he approached me or what he gained out of faking his love for me, but I would never be able to forgive him for making a fool out of me.

*** Present Day ***

I force the rising tide of fury down into a tight, hard box. I draw in a slow, deep breath of the restaurant air. I square my shoulders under my black blazer. I arrange my facial features into a mask of absolute, freezing calm.

Then I walk back to where Julian is standing. I need some kind of closure if I really want to move on and put him in my past.

"Julian, I have one single question for you," I say. I keep my voice completely even, refusing to let any emotion bleed through the syllables. "Why did you betray me?"

Julian takes a sudden half-step backward. His polished leather shoes squeak softly against the smooth marble floor. The hostile, defensive anger drops completely from his handsome face. A misguided, pathetic softness replaces it. He scans my face, and then he shakes his head.

“You still haven’t gotten over me, have you?”

I frown. “What?”

He scoffs, and he shakes his head again. “I knew it,” he mutters.

He genuinely thinks I am asking from a place of lingering heartbreak. He actually believes my heart still bleeds for him.

He steps forward again. He reaches out with both of his hands.

His fingers clamp down hard on my shoulders. The physical contact is aggressive and painfully tight. It makes my stomach turn in disgust. He digs his thumbs into the fabric of my jacket. Leo shifts his weight instantly behind me, preparing to intervene. I raise my right hand slightly, signaling Leo to stand down. I need to handle this pathetic display myself.

"Emily, please listen to me," Julian pleads. His brown eyes search my face frantically, and if I didn’t already know that he was the biggest liar on earth, I would have thought he was genuine. "That day in the hospital room was a massive misunderstanding. Chloe was just incredibly upset about my coma. We don’t share an intimate relationship. She is completely exaggerating everything for attention. You know how dramatic she gets."

I don’t fight his grip. I don’t shout. I simply shake my head slowly from side to side. This man must really think I’m a fool.

"Stop lying, Julian," I reply. The flat tone of my voice hangs heavy in the air. "I saw you kissing her. I heard the exact words you spoke to her about delaying our wedding. Don’t insult my intelligence with these childish excuses."

Julian opens his mouth to argue. I cut him off immediately.

"Did you pursue Chloe because she achieved the highest score in the national college entrance exams?" I ask. I tilt my chin up and stare directly into his lying eyes. "Or did you pursue her specifically because Professor Chase took her on as a primary protégé? Which specific credential made her worth sleeping with?"

Julian freezes. His jaw drops open slightly. The grip on my shoulders loosens for a fraction of a second. Absolute astonishment washes over his perfectly groomed features. He is entirely shocked by my direct, surgical assessment. He thought he was a master manipulator. He never expected me to completely dissect his true, calculating motives and lay them bare in a public hallway.

He lowers his gaze to the geometrically patterned marble tiles between our feet. A long, heavy silence stretches between us. The muffled chatter of the wealthy diners in the main room echoes down the corridor, serving as a bizarre soundtrack to his public unmasking.

"Three years ago, I truly loved you," Julian finally says. He keeps his eyes glued to the floor. His voice lacks its usual booming confidence. "I didn’t look down on your academic background. I didn’t care that you dropped out of the medical program. You were brilliant and beautiful. But my parents absolutely refused to give their approval. The Thorne family demands a specific social standing from its future daughters-in-law."

"So you blame your parents for your own infidelity," I state. The pathetic nature of his defense is almost comical.

He looks up quickly. His face flushes with bright, defensive heat. "I’m telling you the complete truth. You weren’t considered good enough for my circle. I couldn’t introduce a college dropout to my wealthy friends or my elite corporate investors. The social pressure was immense. Then I met Chloe at a medical charity gala by pure chance."

I stare at him in utter disgust. The absolute cowardice radiating from his expensive burgundy suit makes me physically sick. He is a grown man blaming his mommy and daddy for his inability to remain faithful.

"Chloe possessed the perfect academic pedigree," Julian continues. His words tumble out in a rushed, desperate stream, as if talking faster will suddenly validate his terrible choices. "She had the direct, personal connection to Professor Chase. I knew she could be entirely instrumental in advancing my career. I needed that exact leverage to secure my leadership position within Thorne Medical Corporation. It was a strategic necessity."

"And your brilliant strategy was to seduce my sister behind my back," I say.

"My original plan was simply to postpone our wedding," he argues. He squeezes my shoulders again, trying to force me to understand his twisted logic. "I needed time to figure out a permanent solution that kept everyone happy. I needed to secure my corporate standing first. Then the car crash happened. The coma ruined my entire timeline."

I let out a short, sharp breath. The sheer, terrifying entitlement of his logic is breathtaking. He viewed my life and my commitment as a scheduling conflict.

"Let us cut straight to the point, Julian," I say. I step closer, invading his space. "If Chloe was so absolutely vital to your corporate career, why did you string me along for three years? Why didn’t you simply break up with me and date her openly?"

Julian doesn’t hesitate for a single second. "Because I love you."

Bile rises, burning in the back of my throat. The physical revulsion is immediate and severe. I curl my lips into a deep, mocking sneer.

"You don’t know the first thing about love," I spit the words at him. "You are just incredibly, pathetically greedy. You wanted the academic prestige and the powerful corporate connections from Chloe, but you wanted my absolute devotion waiting for you safely at home. You wanted to have your cake and eat it too. You are a selfish, spineless coward."

My words strike him like a physical slap across the face.

His face turns a dark, mottled red. The veins in his neck bulge against his crisp white collar. He tightens his grip on my shoulders until the intense pressure genuinely hurts my collarbones. He shakes me slightly.

"You have to understand my position," Julian demands. His voice grows loud and frantic, drawing a curious glance from a passing waiter. "I am the sole heir to a massive medical empire. The expectations are crushing. I had no other choice. I did what I had to do to survive in my cutthroat world."

"There is always a choice," I reply. A cold, scornful laugh escapes my lips. "You chose power. You chose convenience. You chose to be a liar. Don’t expect me to offer you any absolution for your complete lack of integrity."

I reach up and grab his wrists. My fingers dig into his expensive wool sleeves. "Let go of me right now."

Julian completely loses his remaining self-control. His dark eyes turn wild and unpredictable. His breathing turns ragged and shallow. The composed, arrogant corporate heir vanishes entirely, leaving behind a desperate, cornered animal.

"Why are you forcing me like this?" Julian asks. His voice turns hoarse and cracks on the final syllable. "Why can’t you just be reasonable and understand my sacrifices?"

"Because your sacrifices were made entirely at my expense," I say. I shove his hands off my shoulders with a violent, forceful push. I take a definitive step backward, creating a wide physical barrier between us. "Don’t ever touch me again."
