There are very few things more dangerous than a predator who moves without making a single sound.

I sit alone in the dim light of the private booth. Victor just practically sprinted through the velvet curtains to wash his face. I lean forward and reach for the crystal pitcher resting on the mahogany table. I need to pour myself a glass of ice water. The chaotic energy of the evening is severely draining my physical stamina.

"It is quite entertaining watching you dismantle these powerful executives one by one."

The deep male voice speaks directly behind my left shoulder.

I freeze completely. My hand stops inches away from the crystal pitcher. No one walked through the curtains. I did not hear a single footstep on the thick carpet. Yet, a man is standing right behind my chair in a highly secure VIP dining room.

I turn my head slowly.

The intruder stands in the shadows near the flocked silk wallpaper. He wears a bespoke navy blue suit that screams of generational wealth. His tie hangs loose around his collar, looking deliberately careless, but the diamond tie clip holding it in place betrays his actual net worth. He holds a heavy crystal tumbler filled with amber liquid and a single square ice cube. His light brown hair falls in a perfectly messy wave across his forehead.

His eyes are a striking, piercing green.

This is Warren Sinclair. Again. Maybe because he’s the owner of Bordeaux 101 and Alistair’s ruthless business partner, he think he can interrupt any conversation he wants.

Alistair’s explicit warning rings loudly in my memory. *Stay away from Warren."

Warren is smiling at me right now.

I do not stand up. I maintain my dominant position at the mahogany table. I cross my legs and rest my bandaged hands in my lap. I keep my posture perfectly rigid.

"What exactly did you do to Victor Sterling?" Warren asks. He takes a slow sip from his glass. The ice clinks softly against the crystal. "I just watched the most composed pharmaceutical executive in this entire state sprint past my table looking like he saw an actual ghost."

"We had a slight disagreement regarding corporate restructuring," I reply dryly. I offer him absolutely nothing.

Warren chuckles. The rich, warm sound fills the small room. He steps closer to the table. The faint, masculine scent of expensive sandalwood and dark espresso washes over me. He assesses my tailored black blazer and my pristine white blouse. He studies the thick medical tape wrapped around my palms.

"A disagreement," Warren repeats. He tilts his head to the side. He looks highly amused. "Right. He looked completely devastated. He practically shoved a waiter out of his way to reach the restroom. I suppose your relationship with him must be highly unusual to elicit such a dramatic physical response."

My patience evaporates entirely. I am currently orchestrating a billion-dollar pharmaceutical deal. I refuse to be a pawn in whatever twisted psychological game he plays with Alistair.

"You are completely crossing professional boundaries, Mr. Sinclair," I state bluntly.

Warren stops walking. His green eyes widen slightly. He clearly did not expect me to know his identity.

I drop my voice to a cold, unforgiving register. "This is a private dining booth reserved for a closed corporate meeting. I do not care about your observations. I will not entertain your idle curiosity. I strongly suggest you take your expensive drink and walk out the exact same way you came in."

Absolute silence stretches between us.

Warren probably expects women to flatter him. He expects people to cater to his immense wealth and his charming smile. My flat, absolute dismissal catches him completely off guard.

A slow, brilliant smile spreads across his handsome face. He finds my bluntness incredibly entertaining.

"You are delightfully straightforward," Warren says. He raises his crystal tumbler in a mock toast. "Most people in this building would sell their own relatives for five minutes of my time. You just told me to get out. I find that deeply fascinating."

"I am thrilled for your personal growth," I reply. I point a bandaged finger toward the exit. "Now leave."

Warren laughs again. He bows his head in a dramatic, sweeping motion of fake apology. "My deepest apologies for the intrusion. Enjoy your restructuring, Emily."

He knows my name. He turns around and slips silently through the gap in the heavy velvet curtains. He disappears into the noisy main dining room, leaving me completely alone once again.

I let out a slow, measured breath. I pour the ice water and take a long drink. Warren Sinclair is a massive, unpredictable variable. I need to keep my guard entirely up whenever I am inside this building.

Three minutes pass in total silence.

The velvet curtains part for a second time.

Victor Sterling steps back into the private booth. He looks entirely different. The frantic, cornered panic is completely gone from his sharp features. He buttoned his silver-gray suit jacket, restoring his pristine professional armor. The edges of his dark hair are slightly damp from the restroom sink. He clearly splashed freezing water on his face to shock his system back into a rational state.

The red handprint on his left cheek has faded into a dull pink shadow.

He does not walk to his own chair. He walks directly to my side of the mahogany table.

Victor reaches down and grips the heavy leather back of my chair. He pulls it out a few inches, offering me a gesture of absolute, undeniable respect. He bows his head slightly, acknowledging my complete authority over the situation.

"Please excuse my temporary absence, Dr. Grayson," Victor says. His voice is perfectly steady. He uses my professional title without a single trace of hesitation or mockery.

"Sit down, Victor," I say.

He walks around the table and takes his seat across from me. He folds his manicured hands on the polished wood. He waits for me to dictate the terms of our engagement. The power dynamic in the room shifted permanently during his trip to the restroom. He went from treating me like a cheap annoyance to treating me like his singular corporate savior.

"We need to address what happened before you left the room," I begin. I lean forward and rest my arms on the table. "I didn’t slap you simply because I enjoy violence. I hit you because I needed an immediate, undeniable metric of your emotional control."

Victor nods slowly. He pushes his wire-rimmed glasses up his nose. He listens with intense focus.

"You are currently engaged in a massive, highly public feud with the Monroe family," I continue. I keep my voice calm and analytical. "They control the legislative and financial sectors of this state. They are ruthless. If we sign this contract, they will inevitably target our production lines. They will launch aggressive smear campaigns. They will attempt to bribe our distributors and sabotage our clinical trials. The pressure will be immense and entirely unfair."

I pause to let the reality of the situation sink in.

"Capability means absolutely nothing without emotional stability," I state firmly. "I can hire a hundred brilliant logistical managers. But if my primary corporate partner loses his temper and punches a rival executive in front of a reporter, my entire patent goes down in flames. I needed to know exactly how you react when someone disrespects you. I needed to know if you strike back, or if you strategize."

Victor looks at me with newfound reverence. Complete understanding washes over his features. He realizes I am not just a brilliant chemist. I am a highly calculating strategist preparing for a brutal corporate war.

"You called security," I say. A small smile touches my lips. "You prioritized your impending business meeting over your bruised ego. You maintained your composure. That is exactly why you are sitting here right now."

Victor takes a deep breath. He reaches for his own glass of water.

"I completely agree with your reasoning, Dr. Grayson," Victor replies. His tone is entirely sincere. "I will admit, my initial instinct was highly aggressive. I am incredibly fortunate I didn’t lose my temper and ruin this opportunity. Your test was severe, but given the enemies we face, it was entirely justified."

He takes a sip of water. He sets the glass down carefully. A new question clearly burns in his mind. He hesitates, tapping his finger against the crystal rim.

"Speak freely," I instruct him.

Victor clears his throat. "I am simply curious about a specific variable. I witnessed the altercation in the hallway earlier this evening. Julian Thorne grabbed you. He was incredibly aggressive. You also mentioned a long history of bad blood when Dr. Aris presented his profile to you."

He studies my face, searching for any sign of weakness.

"Thorne Medical possesses a massive infrastructure," Victor points out. "They are a much safer bet than my company. Yet, you rejected him completely. What exactly is your relationship with Julian Thorne?"

I do not look away. I do not hide the ugly reality of my past. Honesty is the only foundation I am willing to build this partnership upon.

"I am Julian Thorne’s ex-girlfriend," I openly admit.

Victor freezes. His eyes widen behind his pristine lenses. The piece of information hits him hard. He quickly calculates the massive implications of that simple sentence.

"Julian Thorne is an arrogant, cowardly liar," I explain bluntly. "He prioritizes his own convenience above basic human decency. He strung me along for years while secretly pursuing my stepsister for her academic connections. He thought he could discard me without facing any consequences. He thought I was weak."

I lean back against the plush velvet cushions.

"He spent the entire afternoon bragging about securing the SN1818 patent," I say. "He truly believed his wealth and his lies guaranteed him a victory. He has absolutely no idea that his ex-girlfriend owns the formula he desperately needs."

Victor stares at me in pure, unadulterated shock. A slow, highly predatory smile begins to form on his lips. He finally grasps the sheer magnitude of the revenge I am currently executing. Julian didn’t just lose a business contract tonight. He lost a billion-dollar empire to the very woman he betrayed.

"That is spectacular," Victor murmurs. His voice holds a deep, genuine note of respect. "Julian Thorne is entirely oblivious to his own execution."

"He will figure it out eventually," I reply. I dismiss Julian from my mind with a wave of my bandaged hand. "But right now, we have far more important matters to discuss. Pull up the legal documents on your tablet, Victor. Let’s build a pharmaceutical monopoly."
