Chapter 150 - 149 The Price of Silence
*** EMILY ***
A fragile male ego shatters louder than cheap glass.
I turn away from the open window, letting the warm Asuir City breeze brush against the back of my neck. Silas sits at the round oak table, staring at me through the thick, toxic cloud of his own cigar smoke. He expects me to apologize. He expects me to reconsider his ridiculous proposition and throw myself at his feet.
"I am entirely unworthy of such a grand honor," I tell him. My voice remains perfectly flat, stripped of any emotion or warmth. "My answer is final, Silas. I’m staying exactly where I am."
The skin around his eyes tightens. He grips the edge of the polished oak table, his large hands forming tight, aggressive fists. He hates being told no. He hates losing control of a negotiation, and he despises losing to a woman who refuses to be intimidated.
"Fine," Silas bites out. He swallows his raging temper, burying it under a thin, transparent layer of professional indifference. He leans forward, stabbing his cigar in my direction. "If you want to stay married to a glorified doorstop, that is your terrible decision. But you owe me some answers. How exactly do you know Dr. Aris? What is your actual connection to the top cardiac surgeon in the entire city?"
I walk slowly back to my chair and sit down next to Zoe. "I decline to comment on my personal medical connections."
Silas narrows his eyes. The muscle in his thick jaw jumps. "You expect me to just hand over a premium commercial property without knowing what you are putting inside it? What exactly are you renting my building for?"
"I have no comment regarding my business plans," I reply smoothly. I cross my legs and rest my hands in my lap. "Our transaction is strictly limited to the lease agreement. The details of my enterprise are none of your concern."
The utter dismissal pushes him right to the absolute limit. Silas lets out a short, aggressive breath through his nose. He slams his hand down. He grinds the burning cherry of his expensive Cuban cigar directly into the center of a pristine white porcelain plate, crushing the tobacco leaves until they tear apart. Black ash scatters messily across the expensive white linen tablecloth.
The heavy mahogany door swings open before he can unleash the string of curses clearly building in his throat.
A team of waiters steps into the private room, carrying large silver trays. They move with silent, practiced efficiency, completely oblivious to the lethal tension suffocating the space. They set down plates of seared steak, roasted asparagus, and creamy truffle risotto. The rich, savory smells immediately overpower the lingering stench of the crushed cigar.
The waiters bow politely and exit the room in a single, quiet file.
Silas grabs his silver fork and knife. He cuts into his steak with entirely unnecessary force. The metal blade scrapes harshly against the ceramic plate. He shoves a piece of meat into his mouth and chews aggressively, staring at the wall. He doesn’t say a single word. He eats in angry, brooding silence.
I ignore him completely. I pick up a small piece of bread from the center basket and take a slow bite.
Next to me, Zoe hasn’t touched her cutlery. She remains entirely focused on the thick manila folder resting beside her plate. Her dark eyes dart rapidly back and forth across the dense legal paragraphs. She flips the heavy pages, double-checking the indemnity clauses and the maintenance obligations.
Ten agonizing minutes pass. Silas finishes his meal, throwing his linen napkin onto his empty plate. He reaches for his crystal water glass and drinks the entire thing in a single, continuous gulp.
Zoe finally closes the manila folder. She smooths her hand over the cardboard cover, taking a long, deep breath to steady her racing pulse.
"The contract is standard," Zoe whispers to me. She keeps her voice incredibly low, ensuring Silas cannot hear her over the ambient background music. "There are no hidden extortion clauses. The base rent is locked at forty-five thousand dollars a month for a five-year term. It is legally sound. But I am still terrified, Emily. Are we seriously doing business with him?"
I reach under the table and place my hand over her trembling fingers. I give her a firm, reassuring squeeze.
"You did excellent work reviewing this," I tell her softly. "Leave the rest of the risk entirely to me."
I pull a sleek black pen from my leather backpack. I flip the folder open to the final signature page. I do not hesitate. I press the ink to the paper and sign my name in a smooth, sharp cursive script on the dotted line.
I slide the open folder across the oak table toward Silas.
"Your turn," I say.
Silas picks up the pen. He signs the landlord authorization line with aggressive, jagged strokes. He tosses the pen onto the table, leaning back in his velvet chair.
"The ink is dry," Silas says, crossing his arms over his tailored suit jacket. "The property is yours. I expect my money."
I pick up my phone from the table. I unlock the screen and open my secure banking application. I navigate to the transfer portal and input the routing numbers listed on the first page of the lease agreement. I type in two hundred and seventy thousand dollars, covering the mandatory six months of rent upfront.
I tap the confirm button. The bright green ’Transaction Successful’ notification lights up the screen.
"Two hundred and seventy thousand dollars," I announce, placing the phone face down. "The funds are currently being routed into your account."
Silas pulls his own phone from his breast pocket. He stares at the screen for a brief second before a slow, dark smirk crawls across his face. He slides the device away and stands up from the table. He adjusts the lapels of his suit, looking down at me with a mixture of resentment and grudging respect.
"I received the deposit," Silas says. He grabs his heavy wooden cane from the edge of the table. "I will make sure to send a massive flower basket when you finally open your mysterious little business. Just to show my support."
The threat is entirely veiled, but the underlying message is crystal clear. He intends to keep a very close eye on my operations.
"I prefer orchids," I reply dryly, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.
Silas snorts softly. He turns his back on the table and walks toward the mahogany door. He stops right in front of the entryway, intentionally crowding Leo’s space. The massive security guard doesn’t move a single inch. Leo stares straight ahead, completely unbothered by the mob boss trying to stare him down.
Silas glares at Leo, his dark eyes filled with undisguised hostility. He mutters a quiet, filthy curse under his breath, shoulders past the bodyguard, and pushes the heavy door open.
The door clicks shut behind him, sealing the private room once again.
Zoe completely collapses.
She slumps forward, resting her forehead directly against the cool oak table. A loud, shuddering exhale leaves her lungs. The sheer adrenaline keeping her upright for the last hour vanishes entirely, leaving her looking physically weak and drained.
"My legs are completely numb," Zoe groans against the wood. She lifts her head slowly, pushing her dark bob out of her face. "That man is a walking nightmare. He went from trying to beat your guard with a cane to confessing his undying love for you, and then back to issuing veiled threats in the span of thirty minutes. He is completely unpredictable."
She grabs her crystal water glass and drinks greedily, her hands still shaking slightly. "Emily, I really hope we made the right choice. Renting from a syndicate boss feels like walking directly into a minefield."
"It is a calculated risk," I explain gently, pulling the signed lease agreement into my backpack. "Silas operates on leverage and fear. He thinks he can intimidate us, but he knows he cannot touch me."
Zoe lowers her glass. She frowns, her dark eyes filled with genuine confusion. "Why not? You just gave him a quarter of a million dollars. He knows exactly where we are going to be every single day."
"Because he needs Dr. Aris," I say simply. "His mother’s heart condition is severe. The surgery today was successful, but cardiac recovery is a highly volatile process. She will require continuous, specialized care for the rest of her life. Dr. Aris is the only surgeon in Asuir City capable of keeping her alive. Silas loves his mother more than he loves his pride."
I zip the leather backpack shut and rest my hands on the table. "As long as his mother is alive, he will be extremely mindful of upsetting Dr. Aris. And since I am the one who controls his access to the doctor, he will absolutely not do anything to cross us. We hold the leash. He is just barking to save face."
Zoe processes the information slowly. The tight, terrified lines around her mouth finally soften. She leans back in her chair, letting out a deep sigh of profound relief. The logic is brutal, but it makes perfect sense. She understands the power dynamics now.
"You really thought of everything," Zoe says, shaking her head in sheer amazement. She reaches for a bread roll from the basket. "Although, the most shocking part of this entire afternoon wasn’t the mobster."
I raise an eyebrow. "What was it?"
"You are actually married," Zoe says. She takes a small bite of the bread, chewing thoughtfully as she studies my face. "When you told me Leo was just your husband’s employee earlier, I thought you were joking to get Silas to back off. But you were serious. You actually have a husband that isn’t Leo."
I freeze slightly. I never intended to broadcast my marital status. The arrangement with Alistair is a highly classified, strictly contractual secret. Very few people in Asuir City know my real identity, and I prefer to keep it that way.
"I am," I confirm, keeping my voice entirely neutral.
Zoe leans her elbows on the table. "I just don’t understand. You dress like a regular college student. You take the bus. You act completely normal. But your husband employs private security contractors who look like elite special forces."
She gestures vaguely toward the closed door where Leo stands guard outside. "You mentioned borrowing half a million dollars to start this business, and you negotiate commercial real estate like a seasoned corporate lawyer. You clearly come from an ordinary background, Emily, but nothing about your current life is ordinary. What exactly changed?"
I look down at my hands resting on the white linen tablecloth. I trace a small, invisible circle against the fabric. I think about my abusive stepmother, my manipulative sister, and the grueling, lonely nights I spent in Dr. Mercer’s basement laboratory. I think about the cold, imposing walls of the Wolfe estate and the icy blue eyes of the billionaire I legally bound myself to.
"My life underwent a rather massive shift recently," I say quietly, choosing my words with extreme caution.
Zoe tilts her head, her curiosity completely piqued. "What kind of changes?"
