Chapter 141 - 140 Discarded Remedies
***EMILY***
The pale gray morning light bleeds through the heavy blackout curtains, serving as a bitter reminder of last night’s disaster.
I open my eyes and stare at the pristine white ceiling. The expensive silver silk sheets tangle around my legs. The chill of the central air conditioning bites at my exposed shoulders. I sit up and look across the massive bedroom. The dark leather sofa is completely empty. The plush cushions lack any indentation.
Alistair is gone. He took his early morning flight to Aurora City.
A heavy wave of relief washes over me. I do not have to face his icy blue eyes or his arrogant, judgmental attitude today. I throw the thick duvet aside and slide my bare feet onto the plush carpet. My toes sink deeply into the soft gray fibers. I walk straight into the massive walk-in closet and the adjoining master bathroom. The air in here smells faintly of his expensive cedar and bergamot cologne, lingering like a ghost.
I stand in front of the expansive bathroom mirror. The bright vanity lights illuminate my reflection harshly against the pristine marble walls. I reach up and unfasten the small plastic buttons of my cotton pajamas. The soft fabric falls to the cold tile floor, leaving me standing in only my delicate lace underwear.
I look at the young woman in the mirror. My long, dark hair cascades down my bare back, creating a sharp contrast against my pale skin. My collarbones are sharp, leading down to a slender, highly shapely figure. I have always carried a natural softness, a curvaceous shape that completely contradicts the sharp, calculating intellect I keep hidden inside. People often look at my wide, dark eyes and soft, youthful facial features and assume I am completely innocent and naive. They see a delicate, alluring girl. They never see the survivor who navigated a brutal family and a lethal mountain gorge.
I reach for a fresh white t-shirt resting on the marble counter.
A sudden shift in the air pressure makes the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand up straight. I see a tall shadow move in the corner of the mirror.
I spin around, dropping the white shirt onto the floor.
Alistair stands right in the middle of the walk-in closet. He wears a dark, tailored suit, looking like a terrifyingly handsome statue carved from solid ice.
A loud gasp escapes my lips. I dive toward the marble counter, snatching up a large white bath towel. I press the thick cotton fabric frantically against my chest, covering my exposed skin. My face burns with an intense, furious heat, rapidly turning my cheeks a deep crimson.
"What are you doing here?" I demand. My voice is sharp and loud in the quiet room. "You are supposed to be in Aurora City right now."
*** ALISTAIR ***
The joints in my fingers ache with a dull, throbbing pain.
I spent the entire night hunched over the metal workbench in the hidden chamber, meticulously weaving the dark gray nanofibers. The protective vest is nearly halfway complete. Every single microscopic thread represents another step toward dismantling the Obsidian Triangle mercenaries.
My secure phone vibrates inside my suit jacket pocket. I pull the sleek device out. The bright screen displays a new encrypted message from Jackson.
Heavy fog has officially cleared. The private jet is fueled and prepped for immediate takeoff.
I slide the phone back into my pocket. I turn off the harsh halogen desk lamp and step out of the secret room. The heavy wooden panel slides seamlessly shut behind me, completely hiding the armory.
I step out into the walk-in closet and stop completely dead in my tracks.
Emily is standing in the adjoining bathroom, entirely illuminated by the bright vanity lights. She is completely undressed, save for a pair of small lace underwear.
The visual impact hits me like a physical blow. The soft, elegant curve of her spine transitions perfectly into a slender waist and rounded hips. Her dark hair falls in heavy waves over her bare, delicate shoulders. She spins around, dropping a white shirt to the floor. Her wide, dark eyes lock onto mine. The sheer contrast between her usual fierce, uncompromising attitude and this vulnerable, incredibly alluring state is dangerously captivating. She looks entirely pure, yet entirely seductive.
A sudden, aggressive heat flares deep inside my veins. A sharp physical reaction tightens my core. The primal, undeniable pull of attraction threatens to shatter my carefully constructed indifference.
I crush the sensation instantly. I force my facial muscles into a mask of pure, absolute apathy. I refuse to give her the satisfaction of seeing my reaction. I refuse to compromise my loyalty to Kiki.
Emily snatches a thick white bath towel from the counter and presses it against her chest. Her cheeks are flushed a deep, vibrant red.
"What are you doing here?" she demands, her tone defensive and sharp. "You are supposed to be in Aurora City right now."
I keep my icy blue eyes locked directly onto her face, completely ignoring her bare shoulders and the long length of her exposed legs.
"I need my suitcase," I state. My voice is perfectly flat, betraying absolutely zero emotion.
I step forward, closing the distance between us. I do not break eye contact. I reach down and grab the handle of the black polycarbonate luggage resting on the carpet. I feel the distinct dent near the corner where she kicked it last night.
I pull the heavy suitcase up and turn my back on her. I walk out of the closet, marching straight through the bedroom and out the heavy oak door. I do not look back.
*** EMILY ***
The heavy oak door clicks shut in the distance.
I release a long, shaky breath. I drop the heavy towel onto the marble counter and quickly retrieve my scattered clothes from the cold tile floor. I pull the white t-shirt over my head, followed rapidly by a pair of dark denim jeans. My hands shake slightly as I fasten the metal button above my hips.
I walk over to the closet door and push it shut. There is no lock on this inner door. We share this massive suite, and the lack of basic privacy is suddenly a glaring, unacceptable flaw. I cross my arms tightly over my chest, staring at the wooden panels.
This arrangement needs strict, physical boundaries. The very second he returns from his corporate acquisition in Aurora City, we are having a serious conversation. I will demand a heavy deadbolt installed on this bathroom door. I refuse to tolerate another humiliating surprise like this. I will not live in constant paranoia inside my own changing room.
I step out of the closet and walk back into the main bedroom. The massive space is finally empty. The oppressive, heavy aura Alistair brings into every room is slowly dissipating into the cold air conditioning.
I walk over to his mahogany desk. The printed financial reports are gone. He took them for his flight. I look down at the sleek stainless steel trash can sitting beside the carved wooden leg.
The bottom of the metal bin is stained with the dark red remnants of the Wolfeberry Banquet tea. The sight reignites a hot spark of anger in my chest. I spent an hour perfectly balancing the sweet hibiscus and the dried wolfberries, only to watch him discard it like toxic waste.
I look closer into the metal bin. A small object rests right beside the sticky red puddle.
It is a small brown glass bottle.
I kneel down on the plush gray carpet. I reach my hand into the metal bin and pull the bottle out. The smooth glass feels incredibly cold against my fingers. I wipe a small drop of spilled tea off the white paper label with my thumb.
It is the sleep-aid essential oil I extracted myself. I spent hours isolating the valerian root compounds to create a potent, calming formula specifically engineered for his severe insomnia. I offered it to him freely, a genuine gesture to help him find some peace and rest.
He threw it away.
He threw it into the actual garbage, right alongside my handmade tea.
I grip the small brown bottle so tightly my knuckles ache. The cold glass bites painfully into my palm. He completely rejected every single piece of goodwill I offered. He looks at my gratitude with utter disgust. He believes I am playing some pathetic, desperate game to win his affection.
The anger burns away quickly, leaving a cold, hard resolve in its place. I stand up from the floor. I walk over to my heavy leather backpack and drop the small glass bottle inside the front pocket.
I am absolutely done trying to bridge the gap between us. Alistair Wolfe wants a cold, transactional arrangement. He wants zero emotional connection and strict, icy professionalism.
I will give him exactly what he wants.
