Chapter 100 - 99 An Unacceptable Insult
Delusions of grandeur are tragic. Delusions of adequacy are just profoundly annoying.
I stand inside the opulent second-floor restroom of Bordeaux 101. The solid gold faucets gleam brightly against the dark marble counters. I lean my lower back against the cold stone edge and look at Chloe Vance.
She stands near the heavy oak door. Her tight, metallic silver dress catches the light from the crystal wall sconces, making her look like a piece of cheap foil candy. She clutches a tiny designer purse in her manicured hands. A smug, deeply superior smile twists her heavily painted lips. She genuinely believes she holds the absolute upper hand in this room.
Five minutes ago, the most dangerous underworld kingpin in the entire state pointed a loaded Desert Eagle at my head and offered me an empire. The adrenaline from that lethal encounter still runs hot and fast through my veins. The contrast is staggering. Warren Sinclair deals in life and death. Chloe Vance deals in country club gossip and stolen boyfriends.
"I asked you a question, Emily," Chloe says. Her voice drips with sugary, toxic condescension. She takes a few slow steps into the bathroom. Her expensive high heels click sharply against the pristine floor tiles. "Are you on the VIP floor to clean up the spilled wine? Or did you finally convince someone to give you a handout?"
I do not answer her. I turn around and reach for a fresh, rolled linen towel from the silver basket. I dry the remaining drops of cold water from my bandaged hands.
"You can ignore me all you want," Chloe continues. She walks over to the mirror and inspects her flawless blonde curls. "But I saw exactly how you managed to get past the security checkpoint downstairs. I watched you walk into that private dining room."
I toss the damp linen towel into a brass receptacle. I adjust the lapels of my plain navy blazer. I have zero interest in engaging in a petty verbal sparring match with a woman who possesses the intellectual depth of a shallow puddle.
"I saw the giant walking next to you," Chloe says. She laughs loudly. The sound is harsh and grating. "That massive brute in the charcoal suit. Everyone knows Warren Sinclair employs private security muscle to guard this floor. I heard the rumors. You didn’t marry a wealthy executive, Emily. You married a glorified watchdog. Your husband is just a cheap bodyguard."
I freeze completely.
My hands drop to my sides. I look at her reflection in the gold-framed mirror.
She actually believes Alistair Wolfe—the undisputed ruler of the Asuir financial sector, the man who bankrupts international corporations before breakfast—is a minimum-wage security guard. The sheer, staggering magnitude of her ignorance is almost entirely unbelievable. My father threw me out of the Vance family specifically because he thought I lacked social climbing skills, yet his golden child cannot even recognize the apex predator of the city when he walks right past her.
I do not correct her. Handing her the truth would simply ruin the spectacular humiliation she is currently building for herself.
I turn away from the mirror. I walk directly toward the heavy oak exit door.
"Excuse me," I state flatly. I step around her silver dress.
"Don’t you walk away from me!" Chloe snaps.
I push the heavy door open and step out into the softly lit hallway. The jazz music playing from the hidden speakers washes over me. The thick, expensive carpet absorbs the sound of my leather boots. I head straight for the private dining room where Warren and Alistair are waiting.
Chloe follows me right out into the corridor. She refuses to let her perceived victory slip away. She matches my pace, her heels digging aggressively into the plush carpet.
"You really think you belong up here?" Chloe asks loudly. She points a perfectly manicured finger at my back. "You look like absolute trash, Emily. You wear cheap clothes. You have ruined hands. You sleep with a watchdog who takes orders from real men. You are a complete embarrassment to the Vance family name."
I keep walking. I focus my eyes on the heavy velvet curtains at the end of the hall.
"He probably barely makes enough money to feed you," Chloe sneers. She steps closer, practically breathing down my neck. "Is that why you are up here? Did your pathetic muscle of a husband beg his billionaire boss to let his poor wife eat the kitchen scraps?"
I stop walking.
I plant my boots firmly on the carpet. The jazz music seems to fade entirely into the background.
I can tolerate a massive amount of personal disrespect. I spent three years surviving on the streets. I learned how to swallow insults to secure funding and basic survival. I do not care if she insults my clothes, my ruined hands, or my lack of family status.
But she just insulted my husband.
Alistair Wolfe and I share a highly complex, transactional marriage. We do not love each other romantically. We do not share a warm, affectionate domestic life. But he is my ally. He is the father of the child growing inside me. He stood beside me today and offered me the protection of his entire empire. He is an undisputed king, and I absolutely refuse to let a bottom-feeder drag his name through the mud in a restaurant hallway.
I pivot on my heel.
I swing my right arm with brutal, completely unrestrained force.
My open palm connects directly with the side of Chloe’s face. The sharp, violent smack echoes loudly down the quiet VIP corridor.
The impact is devastating. The physical shock shoots straight up my arm, aggravating the torn muscles in my shoulder. Searing pain flares across my blistered palm beneath the white medical tape. I completely ignore the pain.
Chloe’s head snaps violently to the left. The sheer force of the blow knocks her completely off balance. She staggers backward, her expensive high heels tangling in the thick carpet. She hits the flocked silk wallpaper with a heavy thud.
Total, suffocating silence drops over the hallway.
Chloe lifts a trembling hand to her cheek. A bright, angry red handprint blossoms rapidly across her pale skin, ruining her flawless foundation. Her eyes widen in absolute, unadulterated shock. She stares at me as if I just morphed into a terrifying alien creature right in front of her.
"You hit me," Chloe whispers. Her voice shakes with disbelief.
Then, the shock shatters. Pure, venomous rage replaces it.
"You cheap bitch!" Chloe shrieks loudly.
She lunges forward. She raises her right hand, aiming her long, sharp acrylic nails directly at my eyes. She intends to claw my face open.
I do not step back. I spent weeks learning how to anticipate sudden violence in the dark alleys of Asuir. Her movements are entirely sloppy and driven by blind emotion.
I raise my left arm and block her strike effortlessly. I grab her slender wrist with my bandaged hand. I squeeze the delicate bones tightly, completely immobilizing her arm.
Before she can scream again, I pull my right arm back and deliver a second, punishing slap directly to the other side of her face.
The second impact sounds even louder than the first.
Chloe lets out a sharp cry of pain. I do not let go of her wrist. I step directly into her personal space. I use my forward momentum to drive her backward until her spine slams hard against the silk wallpaper.
I release her wrist. I immediately bring my right forearm up and press it horizontally across her throat.
I do not crush her windpipe. I simply apply enough heavy, unyielding pressure to pin her firmly against the wall. Her head knocks back against the plaster. Her eyes bulge. She gasps for air, her manicured hands scrambling uselessly against the sleeves of my navy blazer.
I lean in close. My face is inches from hers. The cloying, sweet scent of her designer perfume makes my stomach turn.
"Listen to me very carefully, Chloe," I whisper. My voice is a low, freezing rasp. It lacks any trace of anger. It is purely lethal. "You can insult my clothes. You can mock my hands. You can call me whatever pathetic names you invent in your tiny, insignificant mind."
I press my forearm slightly harder against her throat. She whimpers, her eyes watering rapidly.
"But you will never, ever insult Mr. Wolfe," I command softly. "You will not speak about him. You will not look at him. You are not even worthy to breathe the same air as that man. If I hear one more word of nonsense fall out of your painted mouth, I will slap you until your jaw breaks and you physically cannot speak anymore. Do you understand me?"
Chloe stares at me in absolute terror. The arrogant bully completely vanishes. She realizes she pushed a boundary that carries severe, violent consequences. She gives a tiny, frantic nod, her throat moving awkwardly against my arm.
I hold her there for three more seconds, letting the absolute reality of my threat sink deeply into her brain.
"Hey! Get off her!"
A loud, angry male voice shouts from the far end of the hallway.
Heavy footsteps pound against the carpet. I do not even have time to turn my head before two large hands grab my shoulders.
A violent, aggressive shove hits me from the side.
The unexpected force completely breaks my balance. My boots slip on the plush carpet. I am thrown backward, stumbling heavily away from the wall. I wave my arms, fighting desperately to stay upright. I manage to catch my footing just before I crash into a mahogany side table.
I straighten my posture. I look up.
Julian Thorne stands between me and Chloe. He wears his tailored navy suit. His face is twisted in a mask of righteous, protective fury. He looks at me like I am a violent criminal.
The exact second Julian arrives, Chloe’s entire demeanor shifts.
The terrified, silenced woman completely disappears. She instantly transforms into a fragile, broken victim. She lets out a loud, dramatic sob. She throws her arms around Julian’s neck and buries her face directly into his chest.
"Julian!" Chloe wails loudly. Her voice breaks with practiced, fake agony. "She attacked me! I just tried to say hello to her, and she pushed me into the wall! She is completely crazy!"
Julian wraps his arms securely around her silver waist. He pulls her close, shielding her delicate frame from my presence. He strokes her blonde hair with one hand. He glares at me with pure, undisguised hatred.
"Are you out of your mind, Emily?" Julian demands harshly. "Have you completely lost all sense of decency? You belong in a psychiatric ward, not a restaurant."
I stand perfectly still in the center of the hallway. I smooth the wrinkles from my navy blazer. I check the white medical tape on my hands.
I look at the two of them clutching each other. Julian plays the heroic savior. Chloe plays the wounded maiden. They are a perfectly matched pair of pathetic liars. They feed off each other’s delusions.
I do not feel the need to defend myself. I do not need to explain my actions to a failing corporate heir.
"Take your garbage and leave the hallway, Julian," I say coldly. "Before I decide to call security and have you both thrown out the front door."
