EMILY

The heavy oak doors of the master suite open with a soft click.

I look up from the thick pharmacology textbook resting on my lap. Alistair steps into the lounge area. He wears his standard immaculate charcoal suit, but he carries something entirely out of place for the ruthless CEO of the Zeus Group. He holds a pristine white bakery box tied with a thick, shimmering gold ribbon. The rich, undeniable aroma of baked vanilla, dark chocolate, and toasted almonds instantly fills the air between us.

He stops at the edge of the glass coffee table and extends his arm, offering the box directly to me.

"A visiting executive from the European division brought this to the corporate headquarters today," Alistair states, his voice perfectly level. "It is a selection of imported French pastries. I do not care for sweets. You should take it."

I stare at the glossy white cardboard. The gesture is small, but the implication is massive. He remembered I existed during his workday. He brought something back to the estate specifically for me. I reach out and take the box, the smooth cardboard cool against my fingertips.

"Thank you, Alistair," I say, a genuine smile forming on my lips. "This is very generous. The box is huge, though. I could never finish this alone. Do you mind if I share it with Fiona and Zoe? They are spending their entire evening installing light fixtures at the new bubble tea shop location. They could use the sugar."

Alistair slides his hands into his trouser pockets. He looks perfectly relaxed, the harsh tension from the previous week entirely absent from his posture.

"The pastries belong to you now," Alistair replies smoothly. "You are free to distribute them to your construction crew however you see fit."

I nod, carefully setting my textbook aside. I stand up, holding the delicate box with both hands. I walk out of the lounge area and navigate the wide hallway toward the private kitchenette attached to our wing of the estate. I open the heavy stainless steel door of the refrigerator and place the white box on the top shelf, securing the dessert for tomorrow.

ALISTAIR

The moment Emily leaves the room, the relaxed facade completely disintegrates.

I reach into the inner breast pocket of my suit jacket. My fingers trace the smooth, heavy cardstock of two premium tickets. The National Center for the Performing Arts is hosting the premiere of a modernized Swan Lake adaptation tomorrow night. I purchased the best seats in the VIP tier.

I pull the tickets out and stare at the gold foil lettering.

My pulse accelerates into a fast, erratic rhythm. The physical symptom is incredibly annoying. I negotiate multi-billion dollar corporate mergers with absolute, terrifying calm. I stare down rival syndicate bosses without a single drop of sweat. Yet, the prospect of asking my own wife to accompany me to a ballet performance reduces me to the emotional state of an anxious adolescent.

I pace the length of the Persian rug. I need a strategic approach. I cannot issue a command. She despises my authority, and she will reject any invitation that sounds like an obligation. I must present the tickets casually, as an afterthought.

Footsteps echo softly against the hardwood floor. Emily returns to the lounge, her dark hair falling softly around her shoulders.

I quickly shove the thick tickets back into my breast pocket. I walk over to the small writing desk in the corner and open my digital tablet, pretending to review a complex financial spreadsheet. I keep my eyes glued to the screen.

"The dessert is secure in the refrigerator," Emily announces, sitting back down on the velvet sofa.

"Excellent," I reply, feigning deep concentration on the glowing data. I take a slow breath, forcing my vocal cords to remain perfectly steady. "Do you have any obligations on your schedule for tomorrow evening?"

"I do," Emily answers immediately. "I am meeting the girls at the shop location to drop off those pastries. Then I am heading out for the evening. I am meeting friends."

The words hit my chest with the blunt force of a physical blow.

She already has plans. She is meeting her friends. The opportunity is completely dead.

I stare at the financial spreadsheet, the numbers blurring together into a meaningless wall of digital text. A sharp, bitter sting of disappointment floods my system. I cannot push the issue without appearing desperate or demanding. If I reveal the tickets now, I force her into an awkward position of choosing between her established plans and a forced date with her contract husband.

"Understood," I say, keeping my tone strictly professional. I tap the screen of my tablet, closing the application. "I actually have a significant amount of logistical data to review tonight. I need to handle a few secure phone calls regarding the Ultimate Power Laboratory."

I pick up the tablet and walk directly across the suite. I enter the massive walk-in closet, pulling the heavy wooden door shut behind me.

The space smells strongly of cedarwood and expensive leather. Rows of tailored suits surround me, offering absolute privacy. I lean against the dark wooden cabinetry, rubbing the bridge of my nose. The failure stings. I am running out of tactical options to bridge the gap between us.

The mobile phone in my pocket begins to vibrate.

I pull the device out. The screen displays an incoming call from Warren Sinclair. I swipe the green icon and press the phone to my ear.

"Speak," I command, my voice rough with residual frustration.

"Good evening, Alistair," Warren drawls. The billionaire syndicate boss sounds incredibly amused. "I am calling to offer my sincere congratulations. My surveillance confirms the ten-day cold war at the Wolfe Estate is officially over. You managed to avoid completely destroying your own marriage. I am impressed."

"Your surveillance network is a massive invasion of my privacy," I snap, adjusting my stance against the wooden cabinets.

"It is a necessary precaution to protect my investments," Warren counters effortlessly. "Since you are no longer tearing your corporate headquarters apart, I assume your disposition has improved. Which is highly convenient, because I handed Emily a gift this morning."

I freeze. My grip on the mobile phone tightens dangerously. "What exactly did you give my wife?"

"Two premium VIP tickets to the Swan Lake premiere tomorrow night," Warren answers, his tone completely casual. "She asked for them. She is taking a companion."

The puzzle pieces snap together with brutal clarity. Emily’s plans for tomorrow evening do not involve a casual dinner. She is attending the exact same ballet performance I intended to invite her to, using tickets provided by my oldest rival.

"Who is she taking?" I demand, my voice dropping into a lethal, interrogative register. "Is she attending the theater with a man or a woman?"

Warren barks a loud, genuine laugh. The sound echoes through the phone speaker.

"Listen to yourself, Alistair," Warren teases, thoroughly enjoying my aggressive reaction. "The terrifying CEO of Zeus Group is currently interrogating me over a ballet companion. You are completely paralyzed by the thought of a romantic rival. You are terrified she might actually enjoy the company of another man."

I do not deny the accusation. I do not construct a corporate lie to mask my jealousy. The time for hiding behind my pride is completely over.

"I am done running from this, Warren," I state, my words carrying the heavy weight of an absolute vow. "I spent three years chasing a ghost in the mountains. I spent the last month trying to push Emily away to protect my own stupid rules. It was a catastrophic waste of time. I am not hiding my intentions anymore. I am going to follow my heart, and I am going to claim the woman sleeping in my bed."
