Aidan finished the 50th steak somewhere around forty percent recovered, wiped his hands on his ruined sleeve, and walked toward the hybrid without hurrying.

The corrupted branch master had stopped struggling against Jovan’s web some time ago. His remaining human eye had drifted upward instead, tracking the sky, and what he found there finally broke through whatever composure Terroreign’s influence had left him.

Every Tear was sealed. All hundred of them. The violet wounds that should have swallowed a solar system sat closed and healing, and the silence where his army should have been screaming was somehow louder than the screaming would have been.

"No." His voice cracked on the single word. "No, that’s not, that isn’t possible, I gave everything, I shattered the seed, I..."

His human eye found Aidan approaching, unhurried, still chewing the last bite of steak, and something in that casual, well-fed calm broke him more thoroughly than the sealed sky had.

Despair rolled off him in waves, thick and genuine, the specific despair of a man watching every sacrifice he’d made curdle into nothing.

"Keep that despair up." Aidan cracked his fingers, one knuckle at a time. "It’ll help me generate some Relentless Force from anger to fight against the technique."

Deep in his eyes, something old stirred and rose to meet the surface, purple-crimson light bleeding into his irises like ink dropped into still water.

The hybrid’s remaining eye went wide with a new and different terror.

Shadow poured up out of the ground around him in ropes. This was not the clean, obedient dark of Jovan’s power, but something hungrier and older, corrupted at the root and delighted to finally be used. It wrapped his limbs, his throat, the violet threads already crawling through half his face, and began to pull.

He screamed.

The scream wasn’t pain alone. It was the sound of something being unmade and remade in the same breath.

His corrupted Divine-rank essence tore loose from his body in long, smoking ribbons, and the shadow devoured each one on contact. Aidan stood at the center of it, fists still cracked and eyes burning purple-crimson, feeding the process with patient, deliberate will.

’Not just devour. Dominate while devouring.’ He clenched his jaw against the technique’s hungry pull. ’Every scrap of him, and every scrap of what’s already rotting in him, mine to hold.’

The corruption fought back.

It came for him sideways, the way real threats always did, not through his body but through the door the technique itself had opened between predator and prey. Terroreign’s influence surged up the shadow-ropes and found something in Aidan far larger and far older than the technique had any right to touch.

The Darkness.

A billion years tried to open at once behind his eyes. Faces he had buried across a thousand engineered lifetimes surged back toward the surface together, every failed rescue and every dead sister arriving in the same unbearable instant, ready to answer violence with the only response that ocean had ever been allowed.

His anger surged.

The canyon around him cracked audibly, and pressure rolled outward in a visible wave that flattened loose stone for two hundred meters. Somewhere at the edge of his vision, a thin violet seam tore open in the empty sky, the first stirring of a Terror Tear being born from raw, uncontrolled feeling.

’No.’ The word arrived flat and absolute, no room in it for argument. ’Not here. Not like this. I decide when that door opens, not this technique.’

Aidan breathed it down, one measured breath at a time, the same discipline he had built across lifetimes beyond counting. For a moment the whole battlefield seemed to hold its breath with him.

The ocean did not vanish. It never vanished. But it settled, wave by wave, back beneath the surface where he kept it, and the tearing seam in the sky guttered and sealed itself shut before it finished being born.

The corruption, denied its opening, had nothing left to fight with.

Shadow closed the last distance and swallowed the hybrid whole.

For a long moment nothing happened at all.

Then the shadow began to reshape itself, folding inward and hardening. Violet-crimson light bled through seams in something that was becoming armor, becoming a body, becoming a presence that had not existed in this configuration one minute earlier.

What rose out of the settling dark stood two heads taller than a man, built in plate that looked grown rather than forged, black shading into deep violet wherever the light caught it wrong.

A tattered cloak of living shadow trailed from its shoulders, moving independently of any wind, and where a crown once sat on a Divine-rank brow, cracked shards of pale bone now curved back from its skull like a broken halo.

Its face held no features at all, only a smooth plate of dark glass, and behind that glass burned twin embers of crimson-violet that flared once, focused, and found Aidan.

It knelt.

Aidan studied the kneeling giant for a long moment, breathing hard, the last of the ocean’s pressure still fading from behind his ribs.

’That was closer than I like.’ He flexed his hand, watching the faint tremor in it settle. ’Note to self. Don’t let corrupted things go digging in the basement again.’

"Veyron," he said aloud.

The embers behind the glass flared brighter, acknowledging the name the way Finn once had, something in that silent posture settling into place like it had always belonged there.

"Get up." Aidan rolled his shoulders, exhaustion finally catching up with him all at once. "You’ve got work to do, and I’ve got a tournament to get back to."

Veyron rose without a sound, shadow-cloak settling around him like a held breath, and waited.

"First, go on a search and find more like you." Aidan’s eyes glinted with an icy blaze. "You understand what I mean, right? Find the other rats like you. You must have had contact with them."

"I want to hunt them."

Veyron looked at Aidan, eyes bright purple and pure in shadow.

"As you wish, my lord."
