Chapter 168: Something’s Not Right
Yan Yichen was speechless. "I wasn’t aiming at you. I have no idea why my arrow almost hit you when I was shooting somewhere else entirely. I haven’t even asked you yet—what are you doing here?"
"How should I know? I was just standing there when suddenly the ground shook and the mountains swayed, and then I was here! And to top it all off, I almost got sent to the afterlife by one of your arrows!" The more Yue Junxiao thought about it, the angrier he got. The arrow had been just a hair’s breadth away. If he hadn’t reacted in time, he would have been run through by Yan Yichen!!
Just then, Lang Qiu walked over. After sizing up Yue Junxiao, he asked, "Are you okay?"
Yue Junxiao shook his head. "I’m fine."
Lang Qiu looked at them and asked, "How did you two get here? I just searched all over and couldn’t find a single person."
Yue Junxiao shook his head, looking bewildered. "I have no idea. I was in a forest just now, but I walked through it twice and ended up back where I’d made a mark. I had just leaned against a tree to catch my breath when I was almost run through by him."
Yan Yichen couldn’t figure out what was going on either. "Same here. I walked for ages and didn’t see anyone, so I decided to see if my arrow could pierce through whatever this is. Who knew that when I shot it, the place it landed would suddenly turn into Yue Junxiao."
Lang Qiu turned to Yue Junxiao. "You were in a forest?"
"Yeah."
Yan Yichen volunteered, "I was in a sandstorm."
Yue Junxiao stared at him blankly and said instinctively, "You didn’t get swept away, did you? No wonder you’re covered in dirt. I thought you’d been rolling around on the ground. It makes sense you were testing things with your arrow."
Yan Yichen: "..."
Lang Qiu glanced at the large patch of trees that had just appeared and said thoughtfully, "I suspect the spaces we were in just folded."
Yan Yichen repeated, "Space folded?"
Lang Qiu pointed to the vast, seemingly endless forest that had suddenly appeared a short distance away. "That’s right. The Enchanting Heart Worms placed us in different Illusion Realms before, but look—this huge forest just popped up out of nowhere."
Yue Junxiao didn’t care whether space had folded or not. He immediately looked around. "The three of us are here, but what about our Mistress and Sang Mo? Why can’t I see them?"
At the same time, Sang Mo was also falling as his Illusion Realm shattered.
As he fell, he quickly shifted into his original form, wrapping his tail around a branch to stop himself from hitting the ground.
Flicking his forked tongue, he surveyed his surroundings, unsure if he was still in an Illusion Realm or had already escaped.
But just then, he spotted three Beastmen standing below him. Three Beastmen he knew all too well!
If it weren’t for those three back then, he never would have been so heavily injured, taken in by Bai Zhi’s father, and forced to become one of her Beast Husbands.
’Illusion Realm or not, now that they’ve run into me, they won’t be leaving in one piece.’
In an instant, Sang Mo’s golden, vertical pupils dilated. He flicked his tongue, letting out a sharp HISS.
His body suddenly swelled to three or four times its original size, and he lunged toward the nearest Beastman.
Lang Qiu suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. A Beastman’s keen instincts made him whip his head around, but before he could do anything, he was sent flying by a tail whip.
The sudden attack caught Yue Junxiao and Yan Yichen completely off guard. "Lang Qiu!" they yelled.
Their bodies were already moving, instinctively lunging at Sang Mo.
But Sang Mo’s power level was higher than theirs. Even though they attacked together, he easily evaded them.
Just then, Yue Junxiao recognized their attacker and shouted in surprise, "Sang Mo?!"
Only then did Yan Yichen realize that although the snake before them was several times larger than Sang Mo’s beast form, the scent was unmistakably his.
Yue Junxiao yelled, "Sang Mo, stop! It’s us!"
Yan Yichen also looked up at him and shouted urgently, "Sang Mo, what’s wrong with you? I’m..."
Before he could finish, Sang Mo’s tail lashed out at him.
Because Yan Yichen was facing Sang Mo, he was able to dodge at the last second, narrowly avoiding the attack.
Sang Mo’s golden eyes turned crimson. He straightened his body, his massive snake head looking down on them as he flicked his tongue and said coldly, "Of course I know who you are."
Lang Qiu had been badly hurt by Sang Mo’s last strike. He clutched his chest as he walked back, watching Sang Mo sharply. "Something’s not right with him," he told Yue Junxiao and Yan Yichen. "You two, be careful."
Yue Junxiao warily kept his eyes on Sang Mo as he moved closer to Yan Yichen and Lang Qiu. "What’s wrong with Sang Mo? Why does it look like he’s treating us like enemies?"
Lang Qiu wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and quickly analyzed, "It must be the Enchanting Heart Worm’s doing. It wants us to kill each other."
Yan Yichen asked, "Then what about our Mistress? We still haven’t seen any sign of her."
Lang Qiu pressed his lips together and said in a low voice, "They were after our Mistress from the start. It’s very likely they’ve captured her."
Seeing them whispering amongst themselves, the crimson in Sang Mo’s eyes deepened, and he swiftly struck at the three of them.
CRACK—
Sang Mo’s tail slammed down, instantly kicking up a thick cloud of dust as the three of them rapidly retreated.
As Yue Junxiao backed away, he yelled in frustration, "Sang Mo! Snap out of it! Our Mistress is waiting for us to rescue her!"
However, when his words reached Sang Mo’s ears, they automatically transformed into, "Sang Mo, you were just not skilled enough. The winner is king, the loser is cast aside!"
Sang Mo continued his relentless assault. Yan Yichen could only parry while saying, "That’s right! Sang Mo, if we don’t break this Illusion Realm quickly and find our Mistress, she’ll be in danger!"
What they didn’t know was that all their words were automatically changing into something else by the time they reached Sang Mo’s ears.
Furthermore, while the three of them looked normal to each other, in Sang Mo’s eyes, they had taken on the appearance of the people he despised most.
Sang Mo said coldly, "That position you all schemed so desperately to get is just something I didn’t want. If I had wanted it, do you really think you could have snatched it away?"
Yue Junxiao looked utterly bewildered. While dodging Sang Mo’s attacks, he shouted, "What are you talking about, ’want it’ or ’don’t want it’? OW-OW-COUGH-COUGH-COUGH, that hurts! Sang Mo! Go easy on me! If you weren’t out of your mind right now, I wouldn’t be holding back!"
Neither Yan Yichen nor Yue Junxiao were using lethal force against Sang Mo, but Sang Mo’s attacks were truly ruthless!
That last blow nearly knocked Yue Junxiao’s guts out.
Lang Qiu assessed the situation. ’This can’t go on. If we don’t find a way out of this soon, we’ll be playing right into their hands.’
So, thinking quickly, he said, "You two hold him off for a bit. I’ll find a way to break this Illusion Realm."
