Chapter 434 - 223: The Eve of Doomsday (Part 2)
It was like being thrown back to his past life, right into the nightmare of his engineering drawing exams.
He took his leave of Iz, claiming his inspiration had run dry. In truth, they both had a tacit understanding.
Whenever he previewed the future, he would bring back the fruits of Iz’s future research.
’What a shame.’
’These last few trips to the future, I never had time to tend to my own affairs.’
’Otherwise, I could have gotten intel from my future self to empower my present self.’
...
March 20th.
’Time just seemed to drift by.’
Lu Cang maintained a schedule of two future previews per day. One was for the immediate future—today or tomorrow—while the other was for the period before his decisive battle with An Zheng. He also used these trips to bring back some of Iz’s research.
During this time, Lu Cang finally managed to learn Tang Rui’s Root Magic.
Doomsday was approaching, but there was little anyone could actually do.
These past few days, World Doves filled the skies, flying in every direction.
Ultimately, far too many people had learned of the Secret Sea’s impending doom.
And once too many people knew, the news was bound to spread.
Panic finally swept over the land like a tidal wave.
The skies teemed with World Doves, spreading an absurd sense of panic as Doomsday drew near.
Mixed in with all the dire news were reports about incidents like the theft of Tarabella’s national treasury.
But compared to the impending destruction of the entire Secret Sea, a simple theft was truly a minor issue.
March 20th.
Iz had finished setting up a complete Continent Transmission Technique across the Ruelun Continent.
It seemed that currently, only Iz was capable of deploying the complete version of this Magic... Other Mages lacked the means to do so.
Even Level 8 Mages were no exception.
Lu Cang didn’t know if Iz was telling the truth, but for now, he decided to proceed as if he were.
Meanwhile, the schematics for the improved Random Teleportation Magic had been swiftly published through the Magic Association.
Unfortunately...
Not everyone was an Izparut or a Lu Cang, capable of learning new Magic with a single glance.
This was especially true for something as complex as a Space Spell.
So, even though the improved Magic was made public, very few people were actually able to learn it.
This improved version of the Random Teleportation Magic eliminated much of the randomness.
It would now only teleport randomly within four specific regions—the Moon Sea, Boundaryless Mountain, the Original White Land, and the Muddy Sea—so it would no longer send people to completely arbitrary locations.
In the history of Magic, this could be considered a great leap forward.
Unfortunately, amid the overwhelming life-or-death crisis sweeping the Secret Sea, no one cared about what kind of progress this represented anymore.
It was said that the price for a single Random Teleportation cast by a Level 4 Mage had already been inflated to ten thousand gold.
And even at that price, there were buyers but no sellers.
Even if a Mage chugged Magic Power Recovery Potions, there was still a limit to the number of spells they could cast in a day.
Furthermore, Random Teleportation Magic was a major spell that consumed a huge amount of Magic Power.
A typical Level 4 Mage at full capacity could cast it once or twice at most before needing to restore their Magic Power.
Compared to the tens of billions of people trying to teleport to safety, the impact of a single Mage was a drop in the bucket.
It was said that the Light Church had deployed a Light Vessel, capable of maintaining a constant state of Acceleration, speeding up endlessly without limit.
It could leave the Secret Sea with ease in a very short amount of time.
The Dark Church was said to be leading its followers into the Dark Realm, where they would joyfully embrace the darkness and remain in that world for eternity.
For the followers, however, this was actually a supreme blessing.
Ordinarily, only the most devout fanatics, at the end of their lives, were deemed worthy to enter this realm and glimpse the world on the other side.
The Peace Church had reportedly created a Realm of Ceasefire. Anyone who entered that territory was guaranteed peace and stability, no matter the circumstances.
Even though this place was located deep within the Secret Sea, its destruction would have no effect on the realm.
The Cold and Storage Church, for its part, was freezing its followers and burying them... He had no idea what they were planning. ’Could that really protect them from the utter destruction of the entire Secret Sea?’
As for the Life Church, it remained inactive.
All the major Churches were making their moves; only the Life Church had yet to announce any action.
Even Kumironi remained silent.
’Sigh...’
’Don’t tell me the Church I’m most familiar with, the one I have the closest ties to, is actually the final villain, is it?’
In truth, Lu Cang didn’t have strong feelings about whether the Life Church was good or bad, righteous or wicked; he only cared because of its connection to Kumironi.
And Lu Cang cared a great deal about Kumironi.
During this period, the Seventh and Eighth Forms of the Azure Sky Stream had completed their evolution.
"Azure Sky Stream - Seventh Form·Illusion"
From this form onward, it was impossible for others to learn.
This was because the Combat Skill was linked to the Root Magic he had learned: the Core of All Things.
It involved transforming the Core of All Things into a duplicate of himself to attack in coordination, much like a monkey creating clones of itself.
This Combat Skill was inspired by a particular Flesh Magic: Flesh Reshaping.
By shaping the Core of All Things as if it were flesh and blood, he could instantly create another version of himself with a physical body!
In truth, he could have done this before.
But there hadn’t been much point to it.
Since the Core of All Things was the sum of his entire being, creating a physical body from it would have just made it a target.
A physical body isn’t necessary to cast Magic.
But... ...using Combat Skills *does* require a body.
And so, the Seventh Form, Illusion, was born.
As for the Eighth Form, it was another Body Technique...
In other styles, the eighth form was typically the most terrifying killing move—a final, life-or-death finishing blow.
But Lu Cang had no desire to bet his life on a single move.
Looking at his own repertoire of escape techniques, he only had Void.
But Void was about vanishing, not true Speed.
In the end, Lu Cang developed a new form: Movement.
’I had originally thought of naming it "Swift" or "Dash," but I felt they sounded awful. Then I recalled the classic mantra about soldiers marching forth in formation, and the word for "march"—Movement—seemed fitting.’
’So, Movement it is.’
’I can always change it later if I think of something that sounds better. I’m the creator of this technique; I can name it whatever I want.’
This technique, Movement, was an explosive Body Technique.
It involved simultaneously imprinting the Arrays for "Spell Acceleration," "Flight Acceleration," and "Instant Acceleration" in the air before him...
...and then passing through all the Arrays in an instant—
’This is all Magic, so how is it a Combat Skill?’
The Combat Skill aspect was that Lu Cang had completely fused the Tier Five Light Magic he used for travel, Flash of Annihilation, with his body.
Within the scholarly traditions of Tarabella, there was a cultivation method called "Life Essence" that allowed one to nurture a Witchcraft, Magic, Technique, or Gu Insect within one’s own body.
Of course, Lu Cang hadn’t nurtured the Flash of Annihilation Magic as his Life Essence.
It was too Low Tier and would become obsolete before long.
He simply reasoned that if such a cultivation method existed, then a similar approach could be used to establish a connection with a Magic.
And sure enough...
Now, this Magic could be powered directly by his Qi and Blood and his physical body.
The moment his body moved, he became like a vanishing ray of light, arriving in an instant.
For an instant, he was both the spell and the man, receiving the full bonus of the multiple Accelerations and unleashing a burst of speed twice as fast as his previous limit!
At this speed, Lu Cang felt more keenly how difficult it was to increase his speed further.
It was as if some extremely special Law was limiting his maximum Speed. When he unleashed an instantaneous burst of extreme Speed, he also felt as if Time itself had been accelerated. For instance, if a one-second burst should have allowed him to travel one hundred thousand kilometers, and he felt as though he had experienced a full second, he had in reality only experienced half a second.
The distance he should have covered—one hundred thousand kilometers—was compressed to fifty thousand, or even less.
The ultimate result was a suppression of his Speed.
And the faster he went, the stronger this suppression became.
Perhaps in the future, every attempt to double his speed would require a monumental effort.
However, his cruising speed could now be maintained at his previous limit: three thousand kilometers per second.
...
In the short span of eighteen days, Lu Cang, acting as a Prophet, had already twisted a huge part of Destiny. The entire structure of the Secret Sea now seemed to be shifting to revolve around Ruelun.
In those eighteen days, Lu Cang had previewed the Future a total of thirty-six times.
Excluding the two times he died prematurely, the time he had experienced in those previews meant he had lived over thirty days more than anyone else.
The sheer number of Secrets he had uncovered during this time was almost enough to meet the terrifyingly high requirement for promotion as a Decryption Scholar...
Lu Cang felt that the secrets he was currently dealing with were already massive. Given that, his promotion still progressed with painstaking slowness.
The criteria for promotion were truly, despairingly strict.
