Chapter 477: The Keeper Who Chose One Voice

The last road remained closed while the senior keeper stayed in the upper palace, Concord rooted through his thoughts and every branch he had opened.

Vella found him inside the memory court, where gray light covered the floor and frightened minds moved beneath the bark of each living root.

She entered with her medical ring raised and said, "The keeper is still himself, though the foreign core has wrapped his consent around every mind it reaches."

Eirwen stood at the court entrance and asked, "Can you separate the people from the core without separating the keeper from his own choice?"

Vella studied the gray roots and replied, "I can separate coerced minds from the authority pressing against them, though the keeper must release the core himself."

The senior keeper stood beneath the central root with gray light linking his skull to the branches and said, "I chose, because Concord is the only voice that can stop fear becoming private war."

Vella approached the nearest root and answered, "You invited it, though you didn’t choose for every mind it entered, so I will return their choices before asking what you keep."

The keeper replied, "Returning choice returns fear, and fear makes people reach for the next crown promising order."

Hajin stood beside the Chain and said, "Let them reach, refuse, or change their minds without your answer inside them, because removing choice prepares the next war."

The foreign core spoke through the court:

[One voice prevents the first mistake, one voice prevents the second, one voice prevents the war that follows]

Vella placed her ring against the nearest root and said, "The first mistake belongs to its maker, and the core cannot turn every other person into a correction."

The medical ring released a pale line into the root, then followed gray command toward a young keeper’s thoughts.

The young keeper’s body shook, and a voice rose beneath the bark as she said, "I didn’t choose this voice, I only wanted the fear to stop."

Vella turned toward the senior keeper and asked, "Do you release this mind from your invitation, even if the network weakens?"

Gray light tightened around his head while he answered, "If I release one, the structure weakens."

Vella kept the ring against the root and replied, "That is the cost of your choice, and the person beneath this root doesn’t pay it to keep your decision stable."

The senior keeper opened his eyes and said, "Release the mind."

Once the gray line separated, the young keeper returned to her own color without losing the memory held beneath the root.

Vella moved to the next branch, where three minds answered differently, one asking for help, one asking for distance, and one unable to decide.

She separated each coercion without forcing another choice, while the senior keeper released minds one at a time and Concord’s network thinned.

Didi held Crowned Frost across the floor and said, "The keeper is letting them go, though the core still uses the roots he opened."

Eirwen’s partial Zone formed a green boundary around the freed minds as she replied, "Vella separates the people, and I keep the core from taking the empty space they leave."

The foreign core pushed through the central root, and gray light struck Eirwen’s boundary hard enough to crack two green lines.

Hajin opened one Ring, set Aegis across the break, while Juna held the upper passage and Ferra guarded the medical route.

Vella reached the central root and said, "Every coerced mind is separate now, though the keeper remains joined because he still chooses this voice."

The keeper looked toward Hajin and answered, "If I release it, the core will search for another willing host, and the palace will return to its old arguments."

Hajin replied, "Release it from yourself, and let the next person decide without inheriting a voice they never invited."

The keeper opened both hands beneath the gray light and said, "I release the core from my mind, though regret won’t make my choice harmless."

The central root split, and a gray incarnation rose with a face built from overlapping voices.

Aria displayed a notice above Hajin’s wrist after the host separated:

[Concord frequency sampled, willing host separated, remaining root incarnation exposed]

Hajin read the notice and thought, ’The keeper chose one voice, though the voice no longer has the person who gave it a door.’

The incarnation turned toward him and warned:

[You will become the next center, because every divided route seeks a body strong enough to hold it]

Hajin drew the Chain and replied, "I will hold the route long enough to end you, though I won’t become its center."

He opened three Rings, using one to catch the sampled frequency, one to lock the Chain around the central root, and one to hold Aegis across gray pressure.

The incarnation drove every remaining voice into the Chain, though the sampled frequency turned the command inward and exposed a foreign seam beneath its faces.

Vella kept the freed minds beyond the Chain’s boundary and said, "Now, Hajin, because everyone the core released remains separate from the strike."

Hajin tightened his grip and answered, "Then the strike ends at the core."

The Chain pierced the exposed seam, and the gray incarnation broke into light while the central root folded around the dying authority.

Three Rings held the backlash away from the freed minds as the last voice whispered through the court:

[One voice would have saved them]

Hajin pulled the Chain free and said, "They saved themselves by choosing what your voice couldn’t choose for them."

The core collapsed beneath the central root, and Aria displayed two records above Hajin’s wrist:

[Legitimate hostile reward reconciled, 18,000,000 EXP]

[EXP, 280,000,000 / 1,000,000,000]

The Rings closed around Hajin’s arm, and the system reconciled the reward without healing him or refilling his spent power.

Free of gray light, the senior keeper fell to one knee while Vella caught his shoulder.

He looked across the separated minds and said, "I wanted one voice because I was afraid of what my own choice had done."

Vella answered, "Fear can explain the invitation, though it cannot make the invitation harmless."

Eirwen’s partial Zone settled over the court, and its green boundary enclosed each freed mind without joining them.

Didi stood beside the seed route with five Shards and said, "The people remain separate, the keeper remains alive, and the core is gone, so protection hasn’t become a throne."

Before the branches sealed, the dying root released one final projection into the court.

A distant city appeared beyond black mountains, its walls carrying the same distributed circles as the damaged route.

The city held thousands of people, and every face turned toward the projection at once as though the hidden population heard a call beyond the road.

No voice spoke for them, yet they turned together without gray command crossing the distance.

Hajin watched the image and thought, ’The hidden country has seen the road, and its people have already decided to look back.’

The projection vanished, leaving the last road sealed beneath the Alder writ while the expedition stood among freed roots with a damaged map and a city aware of them.
