Chapter 468: One Ring against the Champion
The family hall opened onto a courtyard where Alder roots circled packed silver soil, and the veterans gathered beyond the outer roots to watch.
An armored champion entered through the eastern arch carrying a long practice blade whose dull edge could still split a stone pillar.
Eirwen stood beside the circle and said, "The family gave you history, while the Court requests proof of survival before it allows the road beyond the border."
Hajin studied the champion’s stance and replied, "Then the Court should name the danger, the limit, and the point where the measure becomes complete."
The champion rested the blade against one shoulder and answered, "I will test whether the refusal carrier survives a seven-Shard strike, then stop when one Ring holds the road."
Juna opened one Wing above the courtyard wall and asked, "Will you stop if he falls, or will the Court count the fall as part of the proof?"
The champion turned toward her and said, "I will stop when he falls, because the road needs a living answer that can travel beyond this family hall."
Hajin nodded once and replied, "I accept the proof, though I won’t attack you merely to make the result appear equal."
The champion’s eyes narrowed as he lowered the practice blade and said, "A defender who never attacks may survive one exchange, though a road continues past the first exchange."
The root circle closed around them, and a pale center line appeared while the veterans stepped beyond the outer ring.
Aria displayed a notice above Hajin’s wrist after the roots settled:
[Controlled proof recognized, hostile intent absent, no lethal reward authorization]
Hajin read the notice and thought, ’The system sees a test,’ keeping Aegis ready, ’though the champion still has a body that must return home.’
The family watched in silence, and even the children near the eastern arch kept their hands against the roots while the test prepared to begin.
The champion lowered his stance, and seven Shards appeared above his back in a hard silver arc that made the courtyard tremble beneath Hajin’s feet.
Eirwen lifted one hand and said, "Begin when both sides are ready, because an unannounced strike measures surprise while a declared attack measures survival."
Hajin raised his empty right hand, and the champion drove the practice blade forward with enough force to turn the air into a narrow wall.
One Ring opened around Hajin’s forearm as Aegis formed across his hand, a dark shield of compressed refusal catching the blade without returning its force.
The impact drove Hajin three steps across the silver soil, though his heel found the shallow groove before the strike carried him beyond the marked circle.
The champion pulled the blade free and swung from the opposite side, while Hajin rotated his shoulder so Aegis turned the second blow into distance.
Hajin’s opponent took two steps before saying, "You yielded ground instead of contesting the strike, so the first answer proves that retreat can preserve your position."
Hajin kept Aegis between them and replied, "Retreat preserves a defender when the attacker expects pride to hold the ground, and the road won’t care how the distance was made."
Seven Shards aligned behind the champion’s shoulders as the practice blade drew a bright curve toward Hajin’s left side.
Hajin shifted his front foot, placed Aegis against the flat, and turned his waist so the blow slid past him without forcing a counterstrike.
Silver sparks crossed the courtyard when the blade scraped the shield’s edge, then faded against roots that recorded every impact.
The champion drove forward with a short thrust that changed direction halfway through, and Hajin stepped across the center line to deny the expected angle.
His Ring tightened around the forearm as Aegis narrowed until the thrust passed a finger from his ribs, clear of the coat.
Hajin planted his heel and let the champion’s momentum carry the blade beyond his shoulder, leaving the attacker outside the next strike’s line.
The champion lowered the blade slightly and asked, "Why did you leave the wrist open when the shield could have covered it?"
Hajin answered, "The proof requires me to remain alive under your attack, while breaking the arm of an ally would turn controlled risk into needless damage."
The champion’s jaw tightened as the seven Shards flared, and roots beneath the circle cracked where his aura pressed against the soil.
Eirwen raised her voice and said, "The ground recorded enough force for a first limit, though the measure ends when Hajin remains inside your strongest controlled strike."
Hajin looked at the champion and replied, "Set that line before the strike, because a changing measure can turn a completed proof into an open contest."
The champion nodded, planted both feet, and drew all seven Shards into the practice blade until the weapon became a narrow pillar of silver light.
Pressure filled the courtyard as Hajin felt the Ring resist, then Aegis spread from his hand across his shoulder and chest.
The champion crossed the circle in one step and released the silver pillar toward Hajin’s center with enough force to flatten the marked soil.
Hajin moved half a step left, placed Aegis across the strike, and turned his body so the attack traveled along the shield rather than through his chest.
The impact drove him backward, split the soil beneath both heels, and pressed his shoulder against the outer root while he remained inside the circle.
The practice blade stopped against Aegis, and the seven-Shard aura broke into harmless light that scattered across the ground.
Hajin lowered his arm and said, "The strike reached the limit, I remained inside the circle, and another exchange won’t make the result clearer."
He kept his eyes on the champion and continued, "You could have taken my wrist, forced my knee, or opened another Ring, though you chose a proof over humiliation."
Hajin flexed his hand as Aegis faded and replied, "A useful ally doesn’t become more useful after I turn his test into a public defeat."
The champion faced Eirwen and said, "The refusal carrier survived a seven-Shard strike with one Ring, and he ended a victory before it became an insult."
Eirwen nodded toward the marked soil and answered, "Record the exact measure, since restraint belongs inside the result instead of arriving after danger passes."
Aria displayed a second system notice beside Hajin’s raised wrist:
[Controlled proof complete, one Ring and Aegis verified, no hostile reward reconciled]
Hajin read the notice while fresh cracks closed beneath his feet, and the allied champion granted no system EXP.
Juna folded her Wing and said, "The proof needed no winner, because it showed whether the road could take him before he reached the unknown country."
The champion placed the practice blade across his back and replied, "Then the road has an answer, and I will tell the Court that it includes a man who knows when not to strike."
Hajin looked toward the veterans, the family, and the roots that had marked each step, then thought, ’A restrained defense leaves little glory, though it leaves the witnesses alive.’
The circle opened, and the Alder champion stepped aside as Hajin passed toward the white-gold root chamber.
