All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 483: First Voice

The road entered a basin where fog covered the ground without touching the bare stones above it.

Hajin led with one Ring circling his forearm, while the Watcher kept Ash between herself and the mist.

Ferra held a copper needle above the road and tracked its bending. "The fog carries a second resonance, and it follows a living pulse rather than the buried route."

Hajin watched the copper needle bend toward a low ridge. "A person, or something using a person as its direction?"

Ferra checked the readings in her instrument case before replying. "A person with something attached, because the pulse changes whenever the other resonance reaches my needle."

Vella moved beside her with gold light low at her wrists. "Then we approach without calling out, because an attached voice may answer before the wounded person chooses what to say."

Ash held his quiet Ringlet against his chest and whispered his worry to no one. "A voice can stay beside someone without belonging to them, though the fog hides which kind this is."

A faint voice moved through the still air toward them. "Please leave the road open, because the village cannot carry another person across the hill."

Vella crouched beside the nearest footprint in the pale mist. "We will leave it open, though tell us who speaks and who is being carried."

Fog folded around a figure near the ridge, revealing a man with one arm wrapped in torn cloth. A second shadow stood fixed behind his shoulders, darker than the mist.

He lifted his one uninjured hand slowly toward the strangers. "My name is Oran, and the voice behind me belonged to my wife before the road took her breath."

The second voice answered instead, clearly through his own mouth. "I am still here, and you shouldn’t tell them I am gone."

Aria displayed a notice above Hajin’s wrist after the scan settled.

[Foreign memory strand detected, host alive, strand carries independent response pattern]

Hajin studied the notice while the man swayed on his feet. "Is the voice possession, memory, or a foreign strand using grief as an opening?"

Vella kept one hand near Oran’s shoulder without touching him. "It is tied through grief, though its independent pattern keeps it outside an ordinary memory."

Oran lowered his arm and steadied himself against a stone. "Her name is Sena, and she kept speaking after fever took her body because I couldn’t let the village become silent around her."

Ferra moved one careful step closer with her needle held flat. "Did the warnings come from you, or did the fog teach you what to say?"

Oran’s mouth opened slowly, though Sena answered through it first. "Some were mine, some were borrowed, and the borrowed ones always led people toward the buried road."

Hajin looked across at Vella and gave the medical order. "Separate the hostile guide without cutting Sena away from Oran."

Vella pressed two fingers against the air between the man and his shadow, then drew a thin medical line across the fog.

The line held for one breath before the shadow pulled against it, and Oran cried out when the attached voice split into overlapping tones.

He gripped his heavily bandaged arm tightly against his ribs. "Don’t cut her, because she is the only thing that remembers where our children were buried."

Vella kept the thin medical line steady while he shook. "I am cutting the strand that uses her memory, not the bond that lets you hear her, so stay awake."

Sena spoke more clearly through his mouth, helping them willingly. "Oran, answer her, because the fog wants your pain to become a road for everyone behind you."

Oran stared at the ridge and whispered the truth out. "The road begins beneath the stone with the broken crown, and anyone who follows forgets the face of the sender."

Hajin asked the one question that would measure the graveyard. "How many people followed it, and how many returned with the same memory they carried in?"

Oran swallowed hard and gave them the whole terrible tally. "Twenty-three left our village, though only six returned, and those six carried voices that belonged to someone else."

Rumi turned toward the three misty paths behind the party. "The footprints come from separate groups, because their strides change at every turn and return marks stop before the ridge."

Nari moved closer to the broken stone with her slate ready. "The road selects memories from each traveler, then sends an empty body back as proof that the route is safe."

Ferra opened her instrument case beside the broken crown stone. "The needle confirms a feeder beneath the crown stone, though the mechanism draws from attached memory rather than mana."

Vella’s fingers trembled as the hostile strand tightened around her line. "The shared memory can remain, though the independent voice must accept separation."

Oran placed his open palm flat over his own chest. "Sena, you don’t need to stay inside my breath to protect the children, and I will carry their names."

Vella drew the line through the shadow, and a black filament slid from Oran’s back before striking the broken crown stone.

Hajin sent the Chain from his hand and caught the whipping filament. He pulled it away from the ridge while the Watcher spread one palm toward the fog.

Aria displayed a second notice above Vella’s still working hand.

[Hostile guidance strand isolated, independent memory bond remains, feeder exposed beneath crown stone]

Vella stayed kneeling by the weeping traveler, and she threaded her cold fingers through Hajin’s.

She moved his hand along the empty air where the strand had run, showing him the ghost of the channel. "The route still remembers its shape here, so feel it once, because we may meet it again."

Her fingers were winter-cold from the severance, and she held on until the ghost faded under their joined hands.

Vella released the spent line and leaned against Rumi’s shoulder. "Sena remains, though she cannot speak through Oran as a command, only as a voice he chooses to hear."

Oran dropped to one knee and pressed both hands into the dirt, while Sena whispered through his mouth. "Our village still needs the road closed before nightfall comes."

Hajin looked toward the crown stone and set the plan. "We close the feeder, record the safe path, and leave the choice with the people who return."

Ferra set three probes around the stone in a reading arc. "The feeder is old, though recent repairs made it respond to living memory."

Ash offered Oran a strip of dried fruit without touching the shadow.

Oran accepted it with one shaking hand and almost smiled. "Sena would tell me to save that for the road home, and she still corrects me when nobody asks."

Vella watched the small quiet exchange with her tired eyes. "That is a bond with history, not proof that the foreign strand deserves to remain attached."

Nari drove a marker into the ground beside the ridge. "The safe route turns north before the crown stone, and anyone passing the old mark needs a second-voice check."

Hajin pulled the Chain through the feeder, and the filament collapsed into a hard black bead at the center of the links.

Ferra placed a tight copper cap over the trapped bead. "The hostile pattern is contained, though destroying it here may release every stolen memory at once."

Hajin weighed the trapped bead inside its new copper prison. "Carry it until we find a place where the memories can return without turning another person into a road."

The Stream had held its breath through the whole severance, and it exhaled in one wave.

[ LurkerNoMore: ] the second voice answering through his own mouth is the scariest thing this stream has aired

[ CringeSlayer91: ] the wife stayed on purpose and the road weaponized her, this country is rotten

[ JunaFanClub: ] vella cutting only the weapon and none of the love, best healer on the platform

Sena’s voice weakened slowly as fog withdrew from the path. "Take me to the village boundary, then let me decide whether I remain near you or pass into the names."

Oran rose slowly with Ash’s help under his good arm. "I won’t ask you to choose for my sake, though I will remember the answer when you give it."

Hajin watched them start north along the marked route while Vella followed close enough to sever another strand if the fog reached for them.

Ash held his Ringlet against his chest and spoke the lesson quietly. "A voice can protect someone without owning their breath, and memory can remain true after its body is gone."

Toven began a count of the families crossing the stones, and each person answered before he reached the next name. The count kept the road from deciding who traveled alone.
