Chapter 487: People behind the Fog
The expedition left the sealed shelter along a road marked with white thread, and fog remained behind the stones instead of crossing them.
Rumi walked at the front with her map open while Nari kept one hand near the marker showing the safe turn.
Loccy carried the dead guardian across her back, and Ash followed beside her with the quiet Ringlet pressed against his chest.
A horn sounded beyond the next ridge, followed by wheels scraping over stone.
Juna raised her bow and said, "The sound comes from a convoy, though fog hides how many people are inside it."
Hajin studied the ridge and replied, "Keep the bow lowered until we know whether the convoy is escaping the route or carrying it toward us."
Ferra held her copper needle above the road and reported, "The carts carry no active organs, though every axle has a memory trace from one village."
Ash held his Ringlet and thought, ’A false story can guide a village when everyone hears it from someone they trust.’
The convoy appeared between the stones with six wooden carts, two frightened horses, and a man walking at the front with a staff in both hands.
Families followed behind him in travel cloth, each person carrying a wooden tablet marked with the same black circle.
The man lifted his staff and called, "We come from Kester Village, where the eastern lord burned our homes after the old guardian betrayed us."
Hajin stepped into the road and answered, "Set the carts before the ridge, and tell us why every traveler carries the same mark."
The man pointed toward Loccy’s burden and said, "That body belonged to the guardian that opened the gate, and these marks record the people who survived its treason."
Loccy tightened her hold on the corpse and replied, "The body protected a route after death, and nothing in its memory names a village or a betrayal."
The man’s expression hardened as he answered, "You weren’t there when the gate opened and sent our children into the fog."
Vella moved beside Hajin and asked, "Who told you the guardian opened it, and what did you see before the gate moved?"
The man pointed toward a woman in the second cart and said, "Mera saw it from the hill, and she carried the story to every house before the fires reached us."
He struck his staff against the road and continued, "The route is gone, so don’t use its residue to question people who survived it."
Hajin looked at the tablets and thought, ’The story has a source, though its source may carry a memory that never belonged to the hill.’
Aria displayed a notice above his wrist after the scan:
[Convoy memory pattern detected, shared event record inconsistent, foreign narrative strand present]
Mera stepped from the cart and said, "I remember the guardian turning toward the eastern road, then I remember children screaming when the gate opened."
Vella watched her face and asked, "What do you remember before the guardian moved?"
Mera gripped her tablet and answered, "The lord’s soldiers entered the village, and the guardian stood between them and the houses."
The man at the front turned toward her and said, "That isn’t the story you told us."
Mera looked down at the tablet before replying, "The story changed when the black mark appeared on the village stones, and every person touched it."
Several travelers touched their tablets without speaking, and their faces changed at different moments as separate details returned beneath the shared black ending.
Vella watched the convoy and said, "Let each person remember at their own pace, because a recovered truth becomes another command when we force it out together."
Nari moved along the convoy and reported, "The marks share a weak route, though it isn’t inside the people, so we can remove it without cutting their memories."
A child in the rear cart woke and clutched a tablet against his chest.
He said, "The guardian opened the gate because the old city hated us, and everyone who remembers otherwise is lying."
The Watcher lowered her head and replied, "A village survives through people who remember what happened, not through a command that makes every memory match."
The man lowered his staff and said, "If the story is false, then we carried a lie across the valley and blamed a dead guardian for the lord’s attack."
Hajin answered, "The fire and gate may both be true, though the order changed so the protector became the cause."
Ferra took the nearest tablet and removed its black circle with a copper blade.
The traveler holding it gasped, then covered her mouth as a different memory returned to her face.
She said, "The guardian held the gate closed, and eastern soldiers forced it open from their side."
The front man stepped toward her and asked, "Why didn’t you tell us that before?"
She pressed the tablet against her chest and replied, "The mark made the other memory arrive first, and everyone repeated it before I could speak again."
Nari added, "Children shouldn’t carry these tablets, because the mark rests near sleeping minds and responds to fear."
The front man looked toward the corpse and said, "I am Toven, and I led Kester here because I believed the body proved our loss."
Loccy lowered the guardian beside the road and answered, "It proves something used its duty, though it doesn’t prove the body chose the fire."
Toven removed the black tablet from his belt and said, "Take my mark first, because I taught the village to trust the story."
Ferra cut the circle away, and Toven bent over the tablet as the altered memory left him.
He said, "The guardian stood at the southern wall, and eastern soldiers opened the gate beneath the lord’s banner."
Hajin studied the black marks and replied, "The false history protected the order that destroyed the shelter, because a blamed guardian could not accuse soldiers."
The child in the rear cart held out his tablet and asked, "Can you remove mine without removing my mother from the story?"
Vella took the tablet with both hands and answered, "I will remove the command, then your mother can tell you what she saw in her own words."
She separated the foreign strand from the wood, and the child began crying before his mother pulled him against her chest.
The mother said, "The guardian held the gate shut, and soldiers burned the eastern houses after breaking through."
The child listened while Ash stood beside the cart with his Ringlet quiet.
Ash thought, ’A memory becomes safer when one person can tell it without forcing the same words into everyone nearby.’
Aria displayed a final notice above Hajin’s wrist:
[Shared false history separated from convoy records, independent memories retained, no hostile route remains]
Toven gathered the cleaned tablets and said, "We will carry separate records, and each family will tell its account before the village decides what to rebuild."
Hajin marked the convoy’s route on Rumi’s map and replied, "Follow the white thread to the shelter, and avoid the black road until we understand the station."
Toven kept the tablets divided in separate carts.
Loccy led the families toward the sealed shelter, and the dead guardian traveled beside them as a witness rather than a banner.
