Alpha Kael's dangerous Obsession

Chapter 123 – The Voice That Isn’t Outside

POV: Liora

After the healer finally left the room, I expected the silence to bring me some peace, but instead it seemed to make everything inside me louder. The fortress had settled into the strange stillness that followed a disaster, and even though I could hear distant footsteps beyond my chamber and the occasional murmur of guards changing positions, none of those sounds felt close enough to distract me from the unfamiliar sensations moving through my body.

I remained against the pillows with the twins sleeping beside me, their tiny bodies wrapped carefully in silver blankets. I should have been exhausted enough to fall asleep immediately, yet every time I closed my eyes, I became more aware of myself rather than less. My body felt like a place I had returned to after being away for years, familiar in shape but altered in ways I couldn’t explain. There were too many things inside me now, too many presences occupying spaces that had once belonged only to me.

The White Wolf was there.

The memories were there.

The countless souls were there.

The twins were there.

And somewhere beneath all of them was Kael.

I had felt him since I woke, but I had deliberately avoided focusing too deeply on his presence because I didn’t know what would happen if I did. Saving him had required me to tear through a boundary that should never have been crossed. I had taken his dying soul and drawn it into myself, and although I knew he was alive, I still couldn’t understand what that meant for either of us.

Was he trapped inside me?

Was he sleeping?

Had I absorbed only a fragment of him?

Or had something much deeper happened?

I didn’t have the answer.

I wasn’t sure I wanted one.

I closed my eyes again and tried to breathe slowly, hoping exhaustion would finally overpower my thoughts. Instead, the moment my mind became quiet, I felt something shift inside it.

At first, I assumed it was another memory.

That had become normal for me.

A strange emotion would appear, a foreign image would flash across my mind, or an unfamiliar voice would whisper something I couldn’t immediately place. I had learned not to react too quickly because fighting every sensation only made it worse.

This time, however, there was no image.

No memory.

No ancient voice.

There was simply a presence.

Warm.

Familiar.

Close.

So close that I could almost feel it against my thoughts.

My eyes opened.

The twins were still asleep.

Nothing in the room had changed.

Yet I knew something had.

I swallowed and slowly looked around the chamber, half expecting to find someone standing behind me.

"Kael?"

The name left my lips before I could stop myself.

There was no answer.

I frowned.

Perhaps I had imagined it.

After everything I had endured, perhaps my mind was simply trying to make sense of the connection.

I closed my eyes again.

Then I heard it.

Not through my ears.

Inside me.

"Liora."

My entire body went rigid.

The voice was unmistakable.

Kael.

I stopped breathing for several seconds.

My heart began pounding so hard that I was certain the twins would wake.

"Kael?"

This time I didn’t speak aloud.

The question formed inside my mind.

The response came almost immediately.

"Yes."

I stared into the darkness.

A strange mixture of relief and fear moved through me.

He was there.

Not a memory.

Not an echo.

Not a fragment of the bond.

Him.

Actually him.

I swallowed hard.

"Can you hear me?"

"Yes."

The simplicity of the answer almost made me laugh.

After everything that had happened, after death and souls and ancient powers, the first thing I wanted to know was whether he could hear me.

The connection between us felt different from the bond I had known before. It wasn’t a thread stretched between two separate bodies anymore. There was no distance to cross. His presence existed within the same space as my thoughts, close enough that I couldn’t determine where his awareness began and mine ended.

That frightened me.

"Where are you?"

There was a pause.

"I don’t know."

His answer was quieter this time.

I closed my eyes.

"Are you trapped?"

Another pause followed.

"No."

The certainty in his response surprised me.

"Then what are you?"

"I think I’m still me."

I almost smiled.

"That’s not very reassuring."

A faint warmth moved through the connection.

For a moment, I wasn’t sure whether it was an emotion or something else.

Then I realized it was amusement.

Kael was amused.

Inside my head.

I opened my eyes again.

"You find this funny?"

"I find it strange."

"You’re inside me."

"I noticed."

Despite everything, a small laugh escaped me.

The sound immediately softened the tension inside my chest.

For the first time since I woke, I didn’t feel completely overwhelmed by what had happened.

But the relief didn’t last.

Because another thought entered my mind.

"What if you can’t leave?"

The warmth disappeared.

The silence between us became heavier.

"I don’t know if I can."

My chest tightened.

I looked down at my hands.

"What does that mean?"

"I don’t know."

The honesty in his voice frightened me more than certainty would have.

I had spent so much time trying to understand what I had become that I hadn’t considered what saving Kael had done to him.

"You should be outside."

"I know."

"You should be in your own body."

"I know."

"You should be talking to me normally."

"I know."

My throat tightened.

"Then why aren’t you?"

His response came slowly.

"Because when you pulled me back, something changed."

I closed my eyes.

The words settled heavily inside me.

"What changed?"

"I don’t know."

I could feel him searching for the answer as he spoke, and the sensation was strange because I could almost feel his uncertainty moving through me.

"I remember dying," he said. "I remember seeing you. I remember hearing your voice. Then everything disappeared."

I remained completely still.

"I thought I was gone."

My heart clenched.

"Then I felt you."

The words carried an emotion so strong that I instinctively reached for the connection.

"I felt you pulling me back. I felt the bond breaking, and then I felt something else opening."

I whispered the question inside my mind.

"What?"

"I don’t know. Something deeper."

The answer sent a shiver through me.

I remembered that moment.

The tearing.

The pain.

The feeling of his soul passing through something that had existed between us.

I remembered the exact moment the separation disappeared.

"You became part of me."

The thought came reluctantly.

Kael was silent for several seconds.

Then he answered.

"And you became part of me."

I opened my eyes.

The realization was heavier when he said it.

This wasn’t one-sided.

I hadn’t simply absorbed him.

Something had happened to both of us.

Our souls had crossed a boundary neither of us understood.

I looked toward the twins.

They were still sleeping peacefully.

"Can you feel them?"

"Yes."

My heart skipped.

"You can?"

"I can feel everything you feel."

The statement made me uncomfortable.

"Everything?"

"Not every thought."

I relaxed slightly.

"But emotions."

"Yes."

I stared at the sleeping children.

"Can you feel what they’re doing?"

"I can feel them."

His voice softened.

"They’re strong."

A strange warmth spread through my chest.

"They’re aware."

"I know."

I looked down at them.

"They were watching me earlier."

"They’re watching you now."

My breathing stopped.

"What?"

"They’re not asleep."

I immediately looked at the twins.

Both remained perfectly still beneath their blankets.

Their eyes were closed.

I frowned.

"They look asleep."

"They’re listening."

The words sent a chill through me.

I reached toward them carefully.

The moment my fingers touched one tiny hand, the presence inside my mind shifted.

The child stirred.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

A small wave of awareness brushed against mine.

Kael felt it too.

"They know we’re talking."

I stared at the child.

"How?"

"I don’t know."

That answer was becoming far too common.

I leaned back against the pillows and closed my eyes again.

For the first time since waking, I allowed myself to stop fighting the strange reality surrounding me.

Kael was inside me.

The twins were aware.

The White Wolf was awake.

The memories were still there.

And whatever I had become was something no one had prepared me to understand.

Yet strangely, I didn’t feel as afraid as I should have.

Because I wasn’t alone anymore.

Even if I didn’t fully understand what we had become, I could feel him beside me in a way that was deeper than physical presence.

I felt his awareness settle around mine.

Steady.

Familiar.

Protective.

The same Kael I had known.

The same man who had stood between me and danger countless times.

The same man who had chosen me in lifetimes I couldn’t remember without pain.

I whispered inside my mind, "I’m scared."

For a moment, there was no response.

Then his presence moved closer.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like a hand reaching through darkness.

"I know."

My eyes burned.

"I don’t know what I’m becoming."

"I know."

"I don’t know what happened to us."

"I know."

"I don’t know how to stop this."

This time his answer came without hesitation.

"You don’t have to figure it out alone."

A tear slipped down my cheek.

I wiped it away before it could fall.

The room remained silent around me, but the silence no longer felt empty.

Kael was there.

Not outside the door.

Not somewhere across the fortress.

Inside me.

Alive.

Aware.

Listening.

And for the first time since everything had changed, I allowed myself to breathe without feeling as though the weight of the world was resting entirely on my shoulders.

His voice came again, quiet and steady, settling through my mind with the certainty I had needed more than I realized.

"I’m still here. You’re not alone in this."
