Chapter 291: The Hunters Become the Hunted

The underground chamber was spacious and spotless, with polished concrete walls and a high ceiling. Several monitors lined one side of the chamber, their soft glow spreading across the wide, open space.

A man stood in front of a large wall covered with maps, photographs, and handwritten notes. Names from different kingdoms filled the pages, with dates, locations, and small marks connecting people who appeared to have nothing in common.

Northern Kingdom.

Silvermoon Kingdom.

The Black Crescent.

He studied the maps for a long moment before reaching up and moving one of the photographs. His eyes settled on a name beneath it, then shifted to another photograph farther across the board.

The attack had been only one part of something much larger.

He turned away from the maps and walked toward a heavy steel table covered with laptops and communication equipment. His thick beard covered most of his lower face, while his long hair rested against his shoulders. A faint scar curved beneath his jaw, disappearing into the collar of his shirt as he pulled out a chair and sat down.

He tapped one of the laptops, bringing up a series of live surveillance feeds.

One screen showed Nightclaw Estate. Another displayed Frostbane Palace, while a third showed the Moon Estate. The remaining screens displayed different locations and several people connected to the secret network he had been tracking.

His hand stopped over the keyboard when one particular feed appeared.

A woman was sitting in the garden with a cup beside her while the pup played nearby, pushing a small toy airplane across the grass. A little distance away, a toddler toddled after another toy while a woman followed closely behind her.

The man leaned back in his chair and watched the screen without saying a word.

When the woman smiled at something the pup said, the corner of his mouth lifted.

The smile disappeared just as quickly.

His fingers moved toward the screen, stopping just short of touching her image. After a moment, he pulled his hand back and closed the feed.

"Not yet," he murmured.

He opened another file and returned to work, his eyes moving across the information on the screen.

Miles away, the woman continued reading a book without ever knowing that wolves were watching from the shadows.

A knock echoed through the underground chamber. Three slow knocks followed by two quick ones.

The man at the table looked toward the steel door.

"Come in."

The lock clicked, and the door opened. A man in dark clothes and a long coat stepped inside, keeping his cap low over his face until the door closed behind him. The moment he looked up, the two men crossed the chamber and embraced.

"It’s good to see you standing," the man said as they pulled apart.

The mysterious man gave a quiet laugh. "Raven, there were times I wasn’t sure I’d ever stand again."

Raven looked him over, his eyes lingering briefly on the scar along his jaw.

"You’ve been busy."

"More than I expected."

Raven glanced around the underground headquarters before walking toward the steel table. "No one would think to look for us down here."

"That’s the point."

"For winters, we’ve been right under their noses."

The mysterious man nodded and pulled out a chair. "The council still believes we’ve backed out."

"The search for Nelson is still on. They’ll keep looking until they get tired of it," Raven said, leaning back in his chair as he watched the man across from him.

The man gave a faint smile and folded his arms. "That’s why we’re strategists. We stay one step ahead of them. We plan before they even know what we’re planning."

Raven’s fingers tightened around the edge of the table before he slowly released it. "Then we’ll keep fighting until this kingdom is once again under the rule of its rightful heir."

"I made them believe Nelson was dead. He’s handling his part perfectly, which makes things much easier for me."

Raven sat across from him and lowered his voice. "As long as they believe that, they’ll stop looking for him."

The mysterious man unfolded a large map across the table. Several locations had been circled in red, while others were marked with dates and handwritten notes.

"The day he got missing, I realized something wasn’t right."

Raven leaned closer to the map.

"The sniper?"

"The shot was only part of it." The mysterious man tapped one of the marked locations. "The security systems were hacked before the attack. Somebody fed the guards false information, and witnesses disappeared afterward."

Raven’s expression tightened as he followed the markings.

"You’re saying the attack was meant to distract everyone."

"I don’t know what they were trying to accomplish yet. But a wolf wanted them looking in the wrong direction."

Raven opened a thick folder and pushed it across the table.

"We’ve been tracing the money and communications ever since," Raven said, pushing the folder across the table.

The man opened it and slowly turned through the first few pages until he reached a name printed across the top.

Eclipse Syndicate.

His eyes narrowed as he read the information beneath it. "I’ve heard whispers about them."

"Most people have," Raven replied, leaning back in his chair. "The problem is that every time we get close to finding something solid, the trail disappears. Accounts are closed, contacts vanish, and anyone who knows too much suddenly goes quiet."

The man turned another page, studying the names and figures for a moment before closing the folder.

"Then we’ll be the first to find something they can’t erase."

"They’ve gotten people inside governments, corporations, royal families, even military organizations across several countries."

The man nodded toward another monitor, where names and locations filled the screen.

"We’ve been tracking them for winters."

Raven folded his arms. "Then why are we still hiding?"

The man’s eyes remained on the screen. "Because the moment they learn we survived, they’ll start looking for us again."

"And you want them to keep thinking we’re dead."

"Exactly."

Raven’s mouth curved into a slow smile. "The hidden man hunts better than the one they can see."

The man glanced at him.

"I’ve had plenty of time to prepare."

He tapped another screen. Dozens of profiles appeared, each accompanied by a photograph and a file number.

"Former intelligence officers. Cybersecurity specialists. Soldiers. Financial investigators. People who know how to find things without leaving a trail."

Raven stared at the screen for a moment before looking back at him.

"You built all of this?"

"I couldn’t trust anyone outside these walls."

His fingers moved across the keyboard, bringing up another file.

"So I built a team I could trust."

Raven shook his head slowly. "You’ve been planning this for a long time."

"I had to."

The man’s expression hardened as he closed the file.

"When we finally step out of the shadows, I want them to understand exactly what they’ve been dealing with."

Raven’s smile slowly faded as he closed the folder and pushed it aside. For a moment, he said nothing, his fingers resting on the edge of the table. When he finally looked up, the seriousness in his expression caught the man’s attention.

"There was another reason I came."

The man straightened and turned fully toward him. "What happened?"

Raven hesitated, then glanced at the closed steel door before lowering his voice. "I wish Rivena were still alive."

The man’s eyes narrowed. "They made sure she couldn’t talk?"

"Yes."

He waited, watching Raven carefully. "Any news about her?"

"I received some classified intelligence yesterday." Raven pulled a small file from inside his coat and placed it on the table. "We found a warrior who was there at that moonfall."

The man stepped closer and opened the file. "Who?"

"One of the palace guards. The enemies thought they killed him in that moonfall, but he survived."

The man’s eyes moved across the first page. "Where is he now?"

"Still in hiding. He disappeared before they could finish the job, and for more than two winters, he’s been moving from place to place while quietly gathering evidence."

The man looked up. "What kind of evidence?"

"Names, meeting places, dates, and details about how they operated. He’s been careful about what he sends us, but everything we’ve received so far has been checked out."

The man closed the file but kept his hand resting on it. "Why come forward now?"

"Because he’s finally ready to help us." Raven leaned against the table. "He knows who was involved, where they met, and how they carried out some of their plans. He’s been passing the information to us in pieces because he knows what will happen if they find him."

The chamber fell quiet for a moment. The man looked down at the file again, then a faint smile touched his lips.

"So the men who thought he was dead stopped hunting him and have been sitting back this whole time."

Raven’s mouth curved into a slow smile. "Looks that way."

The man’s fingers tapped once against the folder before he looked back at Raven.

"Then the hunters have finally become the hunted."
