Chapter 1437 - 377: Valkyrie’s Ride (Part 2)
At that time, Lord Sword Saint was still around, and Lord Reid was still commanding the White Lion Legion, while he was merely a little knight.
But now everything has changed.
Whether it’s the flags fluttering on the battlefield, the emblems of the knights, or the faces around him, everything has become different.
"Lord Legion Commander, the demons have begun their assault."
"There’s no need to report that to me; I can see it myself."
Belta replied, on the plains, demons thronged like a crimson tide, as far as the eye could see was filled with those ugly creatures. After the last attack, Bunoan Guard City had a few minutes of respite, but now the demons have discovered human intentions, preparing to use this opportunity to uproot this thorn piercing their throat.
After dividing forces, the city’s defense had become even weaker. But the soldiers chosen to stay behind were without any complaints; most of them were the older, seasoned members of the White Lion Legion, rallying on the city walls with a generous spirit of sacrifice, forming a thin human wall with their silver-gray armor.
"Detected slave soldiers of the Cave Dwellers, estimated to enter range in one minute."
"Watch out for the Barbarian Demons in the air, uncover the raincover on the crossbow cannons—"
"Positions on the city walls, block the gaps."
Orders passed down one by one, the orderlies shouting hoarsely as if they wanted to shout out the very last shred of courage with all their might.
...
A volley of arrows swept over Frey’s head, causing her and everyone around her to involuntarily shrink their necks.
From Bunoan Guard City to the vicinity of Medao there was a road for carriage traffic, but that road had long been blasted by demon spells, forcing the soldiers to advance along the riverbed of a stream. After crossing the bottom of a stone bridge, the walls of Medao village appeared in their view.
Behind, traces of cave lizard shooters were visible—an underground creature that looks a bit like the surface Lizardmen. However, they have tan skin and pale eyes, better suited for combat in darkness. But there were more Little Demons, at this distance Frey could already see their nauseating red skins.
"Knight Commander, there are a group of Hellhounds behind us." someone shouted amid the wind and rain.
"Ignore them, just tell me if the flag is still there."
Someone turned back to look towards Bunoan Guard City, "Knight Commander, the flag is still there!"
"That’s good, keep advancing."
Another wave of arrows came, and the front line of White Lion Legion soldiers all fell together. Then three crossbow cannons howled through the crowd, one of them flew past Frey, hitting Beth behind her. The straightforward girl screamed as she was dragged off her horse, disappearing into the darkness in an instant.
"Beth!" Frey uttered a miserable cry.
But Nemesia coldly shouted, "Forget about her, any of us could die here, continue forward with the will of the dead, everyone, do not look back."
The battle banner of the White Lion is crossing the entire battlefield.
...
Marquis Balta was covered in blood, watching the Holy White Lion grow smaller and smaller in the rainy night. An elder of the White Lion Legion once told him that the White Lion had a soul of its own, that in those days it made a promise with Former King Ai Ke, to become a Heroic Spirit guarding the White Lion Legion. Thus, the soul of the legion was believed to be tied to this lion.
Of course, it was just a legend.
Marquis Balta had never believed such an absurd rumor, but he also had to admit, such a soul indeed existed within the White Lion Legion. But it was not tied to the lion, rather it was vested in every member of this legion.
The Cave Dwellers had been repelled, leaving behind a field of corpses amidst the ruins. They were mere cannon fodder, but unfortunately, many in the White Lion Legion were eternally laid to rest in this wave of attack.
The soldiers on the city wall watched as the Cave Dwellers retreated over the ruins like receding seawater, but behind them emerged enormous silhouettes—Hellhounds and Barbarian Demons appeared on the battlefield.
The second wave of attack arrived in an instant—
"Watch out for the sky."
"Martha help us, this is endless." Someone murmured to themselves as they looked at those hideous creatures in the darkness, "Do you think those nobles behind will come to support us?"
"You’re dreaming."
A low laughter permeated the city walls. Amidst this laughter, Marquis Balta wiped his face, turned, and asked, "How far have they gotten over there?"
"It seems they’ve reached the designated attack point, Lord."
Ten minutes were left. Balta nodded.
What answer can ten minutes give?
On the entire battlefield, perhaps no one could articulate that. On the hastily built walls of Medao village, hundreds of Cave Lizard shooters were skillfully firing, an orange-red light shield covering their heads, providing magic protection and preventing the rain from dampening their longbows.
To be honest, to Nemesia that seemed unnecessary—they lacked any remote attack capability. Humans had already exhausted their resources, top-tier combat power was almost entirely depleted, Gray Sword Saint Mephisto and that fellow’s formidable Vampire had lured the Demon King away from the battlefield, yet the remaining Flame Temple Knights were increasingly few.
Master Liwu in the sky was limiting the demons’ air force, but his ability to stall had evidently waned. More and more Barbarian Demons were released and joined the battle.
Nemesia took out her pocket watch to take a glance.
The siege ladders had been set up.
At the frontline White Lion Legion soldiers wearing silver-gray armor initiated the attack first, filing up the siege ladders and attacking the temporary walls, but the previous attacks had been thwarted twice. Behind the city wall, there were Minotaurs, and their numbers were quite substantial, human soldiers were simply meeting their doom.
She soon realized this.
Time was running out. When the White Lion Legion soldiers were thwarted a third time and retreated, Nemesia drew out her sword. She turned back for a glance, Erune’s flag still flew above Bunoan Guard City’s walls.
But perhaps only Lord Marsha knows how long it can endure.
"Frey, come with me, this time I’ll personally lead the charge, if it doesn’t succeed, let us die on the path of attack."
"Lord Knight Commander..."
"We have no time left."
