Chapter 283: Don’t Follow
Now, facing zombies on top of cockroach and rat swarms, the members of Special Ability Special Combat Team Three were thrown into utter chaos, routed and sent scattering in a disorganized retreat.
As they shoved and pushed each other, several Power-type Superpower Users were dragged into the swarms of rats and cockroaches and gnawed upon.
Two others were pounced on and pinned to the ground by four-legged zombies in hot pursuit.
The bone-chilling CRUNCH of gnawing rose up from behind the crowd.
The flesh and blood of Superpower Users seemed to hold an irresistible attraction for these four-legged zombies.
It compelled them to charge bravely forward, right into the heart of the crowd.
"Hold them back!"
"Earth Ability Users, quick! Build a wall!"
Zhong sprinted downstairs, carrying Huang Shi Yao.
By now, Huang Shi Yao was so terrified her face was deathly white, and she was completely speechless.
Meanwhile, the damn 00009425 was chattering endlessly in her mind: "Host, there are so many Crystal Cores here. Pick up the Crystal Cores, you should have people go pick up the Crystal Cores!"
Huang Shi Yao pressed her lips together, watching helplessly as the third floor was consumed by a sea of flames, all while Zhong carried her in a rush down the stairs.
At the same time, the members of the Jian Country Team, who had been resting on the second floor, had also scrambled in a panic to the first-floor entrance.
"Get in the cars, everyone, get in the cars!" A sharp-eyed older woman saw Zuo Li’s group getting into their vehicle and speeding off, and she quickly raised her hand to direct her own people.
Just as one of their regular team members stepped out the door, a large rat darted out from nearby and bit his leg, making him HOWL in pain.
"Auntie, go! We have to go!" Liao Jian Country yelled at the stout older woman when he saw her look back as if to save the man.
"Aunt Liao! Aunt Liao, go! Aunt Liao!" Liao Sicong jumped into the driver’s seat. Just as he closed the door, a THUD-THUD sound echoed as a dozen or so rats slammed straight into the door.
Liao Sicong floored it, and Aunt Liao scrambled into the second car, her plump body jostling with the movement.
She hadn’t even settled in her seat when the car shot off sideways, and her head slammed against the window with a THUD.
"Holy crap! Even cockroaches can fly after the apocalypse?" Ji Taixian pointed out the window with a horrified expression. A dense swarm of small, winged cockroaches was THUDDING against their windowpane.
"Don’t be so surprised." Song Kexin hugged her backpack and let out a long sigh. "They could fly before the apocalypse, you know."
"Everyone, watch the gaps in the windows! If any small cockroaches get in, take them out immediately!"
The teammate from Zuo Li’s group at the wheel was an experienced driver before the apocalypse. After awakening a vision-based superpower, his driving became a blistering blur of speed.
Everyone was thrown around by the swaying of the speeding car.
Song Kexin hugged her backpack and dry heaved a couple of times.
Ji Taixian quickly handed her a clean vomit bag and patted her on the back. "Xinxin, don’t worry. After you throw up, eat something to get your energy back."
Suddenly, Song Kexin lost all desire to vomit in front of him!
Cres stared at the rear window. "Those things followed them out! They’re swarming! Faster!"
The veteran driver was already putting every ounce of strength he had into driving...
The vehicle scraped past several wandering zombies.
After a moment of dazed confusion, the zombies suddenly seemed to awaken as if summoned, and they began to frantically chase the rear of the vehicle.
However, the veteran driver’s skill was formidable, and he quickly left them in the dust.
The minibus quickly sped away from the old street, turned onto a main road, and continued to race through the night without slowing down.
"Have you noticed? The zombies’ movement speed has increased a lot at night," Zuo Li said in a low voice, frowning as she looked out the window.
Xie Ning turned to look and nodded. "If our superpowers are growing stronger, it makes sense that the zombies will slowly evolve too."
"I’m just afraid the rate at which a Superpower User’s Rank increases can’t keep up with the zombies and mutated animals and plants."
Zuo Li’s words cast a heavy pall over everyone’s heart.
"Turn, turn, turn! Follow Zuo Li’s group!"
BANG! A ferocious-looking zombie lunged from the side, suddenly landing on the windshield of the Jian Country Team’s second car.
The driver’s hands jerked on the wheel, and he nearly crashed the car into a wall.
Seeing this, Aunt Liao lunged forward to help steady the steering wheel.
Meanwhile, the zombie, its face covered in rotting flesh, was repeatedly THUDDING against the windshield.
Sprawled there, its movements looked almost like it was kowtowing.
With each THUD, spiderweb-like cracks spread across the windshield.
Aunt Liao yanked the steering wheel hard, and as the car scraped past a telephone pole, she managed to fling the kowtowing zombie off the car.
The kowtowing zombie howled as it flipped through the air, its back slamming against the telephone pole. Incredibly, the entire corpse bounced right back up.
With its astonishing jumping ability, the kowtowing zombie landed on the last car of the Jian Country Team in a single leap.
That driver, however, didn’t have a badass like Aunt Liao to help steady the wheel. He let out a terrified scream, yanked the wheel to the side, and plunged the car headfirst into a steamed bun shop on the side of the road.
Inside the steamed bun shop, a zombie couple had been methodically kneading dough, their rotten faces fixed in expressions of devout vacancy.
Hearing the commotion, they both turned their heads, howled, and lunged at the stalled vehicle.
Zhong was frantically driving a black convertible, flooring the accelerator with all his might.
Beside him was Huang Shi Yao, her long hair a tangled mess like a madwoman’s, staring in shock and terror at the steamed bun shop by the road.
After finishing off the unlucky teammate from the Jian Country Team, the zombies, their mouths dripping blood, suddenly looked toward Zhong as he sped away like lightning.
ROAR! With a howl, the zombie couple from the bun shop suddenly broke into a sprint, their speed like a passing whirlwind.
"Speed-type zombies! Faster, faster!!"
BANG! The convertible crashed through a thin wall of earth, its front end shuddering slightly.
"Shit!" Zhong swore angrily. "A mutated Earth-type zombie!"
The kowtowing zombie excitedly followed the bun shop couple in a mad dash, and with waves of its hands, it threw up thin earthen walls one after another in front of the car.
Huang Shi Yao, getting mouthful after mouthful of dirt in the convertible, screamed in terror and urged Zhong to speed up.
Soon, car after car sped past.
"They seem to be stopping." Cres stared at the area displayed on his spiritual map, his gaze growing solemn. "They all stopped when they reached the other side of the road."
"That’s a good thing, right?" Zhou Tong breathed a sigh of relief. "Does this mean we’re safe?"
"No. It could mean we’re about to run into even greater danger." Cres stared at a black dot blinking continuously on the map ahead. "Turn left up ahead."
"Turn left? But if we’re going to Wohua Private Hospital, we need to turn right."
"Then turn right," Cres said, withdrawing his spiritual power. "If we go straight, we’ll most likely run into something nasty. Turning left or right is fine."
A bad feeling crept into Xie Ning’s heart.
Hearing the roar of a sports car approaching, Xie Ning squeezed in next to Zuo Li, pressed her lips together, and pushed the window open to glance out.
And there she was: that fucking idiot Huang Shi Yao, having someone chase them in a convertible.
Xie Ning narrowed her eyes, pulled a gun from her bag, and fired two shots at their front tire.
BANG! BANG! The sharp sound of a bursting tire rang out.
Zhong’s eyes filled with rage. He howled, "How dare you?"
The car suddenly swerved, its momentum sending it careening into a street on the left.
’Follow us again and I’ll kill you.’ Zhong went cold as he met her eyes, filled with that unmistakable warning.
