Apocalypse Ground Zero: Refusing To Leave Home

Chapter 411: The Future We Remembered

The pressure beneath Rouxi’s scar disappeared, but the plants surrounding the mansion remained turned toward the north.

Zhenlan felt the wind moving through their leaves. Every branch, vine, and blade of grass resisted it, holding itself in the same direction as though waiting for something beneath the city to pull again.

Rouxi remained half-sprawled against the back of the sectional where the tether had thrown her.

Yuche leaned over her with both hands braced around her shoulders, preventing her head from striking the wall a second time while Chenghai had moved close enough to catch her wrist and now stood bent over the coffee table, his grip still locked around her forearm.

Lingyun had been dragged sideways when Rouxi’s hand tore away from the connection, leaving him twisted awkwardly toward her with one hand pressed against his ribs.

Zhenlan was on one knee in front of the sectional.

His wind continued to move lightly against Rouxi’s skin, giving her something physical to follow back into the room.

"Stop," she muttered.

"No," all four men answered.

Rouxi opened her eyes and glared at the nearest available target, which happened to be Yuche. "I’m back."

Yuche studied her face before easing one hand away from her shoulder. "Are you still touching it?"

"Not intentionally."

"That isn’t an answer," he hissed his reply.

"It’s the only one you’re getting until my leg stops feeling like someone shoved a heated wire through it."

The radio remained open on the coffee table. Han Zhi had apparently heard enough of the struggle to know better than to interrupt, although the faint sound of his breathing still came through the speaker.

Lingyun reached for it, then stopped when the movement pulled sharply at his damaged ribs.

Yuche caught the radio before he could try again and placed it in his hand.

"Continue searching the records," Lingyun said. His voice remained steady despite the pain tightening his face. "Call when you find something new."

Han Zhi agreed immediately.

Lingyun ended the connection and dropped the radio onto the table before leaning carefully into the opposite corner of the sectional. He was no longer pressed against Rouxi, but his knee remained against hers while he adjusted his injured side.

Chenghai finally released Rouxi’s wrist after checking that her fingers moved normally.

Zhenlan let the wind fade.

None of them moved toward the door.

The man in the garage was still making enough noise to prove he was alive, and the workers outside had their own radios, weapons, and people responsible for watching the property. No one needed Zhenlan or Chenghai to abandon Rouxi the moment something beyond the mansion became inconvenient.

They had understood that at the black market.

Zhenlan only wished recognizing it had undone everything they’d already built before then.

Yuche lowered himself onto the edge of the sectional beside Rouxi, his body turned toward her rather than the television. His gaze shifted to the floor beneath them.

"I’m adding another layer of metal under this room."

Rouxi pushed herself upright with one hand against the cushions. "I’m not sitting on a steel floor."

"It’ll remain beneath the foundation."

"How far beneath?"

"Far enough that you won’t notice it."

"That sounds like something people say before ruining a perfectly good house."

"I won’t ruin your house," chuckled Yuche. "I promise."

Rouxi stared at him for another moment before rubbing the heel of her palm over her calf. "Fine, but if the floor starts making noise when I walk, you’re removing it."

Chenghai straightened beside the coffee table and looked toward the eastern side of the mansion. "We should check the original utility plans first. There’s an old drainage channel beneath that section of the property."

Rouxi’s hand stopped against her leg. "There are underground plans?"

"The original surveys," he explained. "We used them when the outer buildings were reinforced."

That answer satisfied her enough that she didn’t immediately accuse them of secretly digging tunnels beneath her couch.

Zhenlan rose from the floor and crossed to the cabinet beside the bookshelves. He opened the lower door where Chenghai had stored the property drawings among several notebooks and boxes of batteries.

Rouxi watched him pull out the first rolls. "You’ve been keeping maps beside my movies?"

"There wasn’t enough space in the other cabinet."

"There would’ve been if someone hadn’t filled this one with batteries."

Chenghai looked toward the television instead of answering.

Lingyun settled more carefully against the cushions. "I support removing the batteries."

"You don’t know what they’re for," Chenghai said.

"They’re occupying snack space. Their purpose no longer matters."

Zhenlan carried the rolled surveys to the coffee table. Chenghai moved the radio and snack bag aside, while Yuche gathered two empty bowls before Rouxi could complain about crumbs getting into the plans.

Zhenlan opened the first drawing.

It showed the mansion’s foundation, water lines, drainage routes, and the reinforced sections Yuche had added since arriving.

Chenghai crouched beside the table and pointed to a faded line passing beneath the eastern lawn. "That’s the old drainage channel. It was closed before the apocalypse, but part of the structure still exists."

Yuche leaned forward from the sectional to study the measurements. "I can seal it."

"With metal?" Rouxi asked.

"Yes."

"Good. I was worried you planned to fill it with decorative pillows."

Lingyun laughed from the other end of the couch, then immediately pressed one hand over his bandages when his ribs objected.

The first survey contained nothing Zhenlan hadn’t expected. The second showed the entire property, including the mansion, outer wall, workers’ buildings, gardens, storage areas, and access roads.

He reached for another roll.

The moment the paper opened across the table, something inside him tightened.

This wasn’t an original survey.

Newer lines covered the existing property markings. Another storage building had been planned along the eastern wall, along with a wider vehicle route, a raised communication point, and several reinforced positions overlooking the road.

Rouxi shifted to the edge of the sectional so she could see around Yuche. "When did we build those?"

"We didn’t," Chenghai answered from beside the table. His voice had gone quieter. "Those were possibilities."

"Possibilities for what?"

"If the workers needed more protected space."

Rouxi looked down at the map but Zhenlan saw more than she could.

Each addition had made sense when they discussed it. Existing storage might eventually become too small. The workers might need another sleeping building. A raised communications point would improve the radio range. The outer road needed protection, and another barrier would provide somewhere to retreat if the first one failed.

None of it had seemed dangerous on its own.

But then Zhenlan opened the next plan.

Proposed housing filled the space beyond the workers’ current buildings. A medical area sat near two planned supply depots, while a second perimeter surrounded more land than Rouxi currently owned.

Her mansion remained at the center.

Chenghai rose slowly from his crouch. He walked around the table and pulled another page from beneath the pile, untied it, and spread it beside the others.

Routes connected every proposed building to Rouxi’s property.

Communications. Supplies. Medical care. Housing. Defenses.

Every line led inward.

Rouxi stood from the sectional and stepped between Yuche and the table. Yuche’s hand hovered near her elbow when her injured leg took her weight, but she steadied herself before he needed to catch her.

She had never walked through the Warlord’s compound. She didn’t remember the roads feeding toward its headquarters or the sectors spreading outward behind multiple layers of walls.

She didn’t need those memories to understand what the maps were doing to her home.

"Why am I in the middle of everything?" she asked.

No one answered.

Zhenlan looked at the dates written along the edges. Some plans had been drawn before the barrier was sealed. Others came from the weeks after the workers moved into the outer buildings.

Every time a new problem appeared, he and Chenghai had added another possible solution.

Planning ahead.

Preparing for the next stage.

Protecting the people already there.

Making certain Rouxi would never be caught unprepared.

But Rouxi hadn’t asked them to prepare her property for an expanding population. She hadn’t asked for command posts, medical buildings, more housing, or another ring of walls.

She wanted her mansion, her plants, her supplies, and enough distance between herself and the rest of humanity to remain comfortable.

Zhenlan had known that from the beginning, and he had still placed her home at the center of a future she had never chosen.

Lingyun had gone quiet behind her. Yuche remained close enough to catch her if her leg failed, but his attention had shifted to the maps.

Chenghai stood across the table from Zhenlan, staring at the proposed housing as though the lines had changed since he last saw them.

Maybe they had.

Separately, they had been precautions.

Spread across Rouxi’s coffee table, they became something else.

Rouxi pressed one finger against the widening circles surrounding the mansion.

"What were you planning to turn this place into?"

Zhenlan opened his mouth, but the explanation he’d once considered reasonable no longer came.

The buildings were different. The walls followed different roads, and Rouxi’s mansion stood where another headquarters had once been.

The structure beneath it was the same.

They hadn’t planned to recreate the Warlord’s compound.

They had simply drawn it one practical line at a time.
