Chapter 80 - 79: Not Martial Arts, It’s Cultivation
Too bad this plan for salvation had failed.
What a shame...
"Hmph!" Su Qing huffed softly. She didn’t respond, her face blushing as she turned back to the noodles.
"It’s all your fault. They’ve gotten all clumped up..."
"It’s fine. Just drink more of the broth, it’ll be easier to digest..."
Still, Su Qing had mentioned feeling more "energetic" than before. This so-called energy was clearly an improvement in her constitution. The change was just too minor for her to notice distinctly.
Although the experiment had failed, Su Qing’s feedback at least proved that ordinary people could indeed increase their Life Value, and thus their constitution, through certain methods.
It was just that the exact method remained unclear...
’As long as I control the variables and keep experimenting, I’ll definitely find a way!’
"STATIC... Brother Lin... We have a situation... STATIC... Brother Lin..."
Just as Lin Fan was waiting for his meal, the walkie-talkie in his jacket pocket suddenly crackled to life!
"You guys eat first. I’ll be back in a bit..."
After a quick word with Su Qing, Lin Fan hurried downstairs.
He pulled out the walkie-talkie as he ran. "This is Lin Fan! What’s wrong?"
"Brother Lin... it’s Liu Bin... There’s a monster... Someone’s dead..."
"Fuck..."
’I told them to be more careful.’ He had expected this, but not that there would be casualties so soon...
Lin Fan ran downstairs and saw three men working on the short spear. They had just finished sharpening the tip. He asked urgently,
"Is it welded securely?"
"It’s welded solid!"
Although Wu Haitao didn’t know what was happening, seeing Lin Fan’s anxious expression, he quickly replied.
"Pack up your things. There’s trouble over there!"
With that, he snatched up the long spear with one hand and the short spear with the other, then sprinted toward the supermarket to the east!
He could already see them. On the ground floor of a distant building, several people were scrambling frantically out of a balcony window. Their spears were nowhere to be seen, and they looked like a defeated army as they fled toward the opposite side of the road.
And Liu Bin was among them.
Lin Fan saw that each of their Life Values had dropped by about ten-odd points, leaving them all in the sixties.
He couldn’t help but wonder how they were all injured so evenly. ’It’s not like a zombie kicked each of them once...’
"What happened?!"
As he got closer, Lin Fan shouted.
"Brother Lin, there’s a monster in the building!"
The moment Liu Bin saw Lin Fan, it was as if he’d found his backbone. He immediately changed direction and ran toward him.
The others saw this and quickly followed.
The people with Liu Bin weren’t Zhang Ziyi’s group from before; this was clearly a different team.
They weren’t far from the balcony they had escaped from. With his enhanced hearing, Lin Fan could already make out a strange "THUD THUD" sound coming from inside the building. The entire structure was even vibrating slightly.
In the midst of the chaos, Zhang Ziyi’s five-man team burst out of the supermarket, spears in hand.
"What’s going on?!"
Zhang Ziyi, running at the front, saw the state Liu Bin’s group was in and demanded an answer.
Before Liu Bin could speak, Zhang Ziyi’s eyes swept over the group and he realized someone was missing!
He panicked, grabbing one of the men by his clothes. "Where’s your team leader?!"
Before the man could answer, Liu Bin, panting heavily, reached out and grabbed Zhang Ziyi’s wrist.
"Wang Zhengyang is dead... It’s my fault."
Lin Fan seemed to recall that Wang Zhengyang was one of the four people who had been with them from the very beginning.
’To think he’s already dead.’
Among the group, only Liu Bin seemed to have a clear grasp of the situation. He ignored Zhang Ziyi’s frantic gaze and turned to Lin Fan.
"I took the other team to relieve Ziyi’s group. Everything was going smoothly at first. We took out five zombies in a row..."
"When we got to apartment 201, we knocked, and the sound of the zombie slamming against the door from inside was exceptionally loud..."
"I said we should wait for Brother Lin, but Zhengyang said he knew the family that lived there. He said there was a really fat guy, and figured it was him inside and that we could handle it..."
"Sigh... I should have stopped him!"
"And then? A monster came out?"
Lin Fan’s gaze sharpened. ’This guy clearly killed a few zombies and got cocky.’ It wasn’t just him; Liu Bin had, too. But in the end, they paid the price...
"The door opened, and it wasn’t a fat guy. It was a huge monster, over two meters tall. It was incredibly strong, and its skin was so tough our spears couldn’t even pierce it!
"But it was clumsy and got stuck in the hallway, so we had a chance to escape. In the chaos, though, someone’s spear stabbed it in the eye!
"It went berserk and smashed a fist into Wang Zhengyang. He..."
"His entire body was just... shattered..."
As Liu Bin spoke, his voice trembled.
"Shattered?"
Lin Fan was also confused by this. ’What does he mean, shattered...’
"Yes... shattered... Not only was he shattered, but even those of us who were further away felt our insides churn. My heart is still beating irregularly..."
Liu Bin said, panting heavily, the fear still fresh in his mind.
’No wonder their Life Values dropped so evenly. They must have been hit by the shockwave from the monster’s attack...’
’To be able to shatter a person...’
’No matter how it happened, it was clear that the mysterious zombie crystals were at work.’
"THUD"!
"CRASH"!
Another muffled thud echoed from the building, shattering several windowpanes.
He could tell the sound was now on the ground floor. The monster had followed them down.
Lin Fan tucked the short spear into his belt. It had gotten heavier, but his belt could just barely support it.
Staring at the sharp spearhead Wu Haitao had fashioned, Lin Fan took a deep breath to calm his racing heart.
"THUD"!
"CRASH—"!
A cloud of dust exploded from the ground-floor balcony as a crack appeared in its wall. The impact shattered every window on all three floors of that unit and the two adjacent ones.
Agitated by the noise, five or six zombies frantically climbed out of their respective balconies, hitting the ground like sacks of rotten meat with a series of wet "SPLAT"s...
Three of them, having fallen from a greater height, were mangled on impact, leaving them with only thirty-odd points of Life Value as they struggled on the ground.
Only two that had fallen from the second floor managed to get up and limp toward Lin Fan and the others...
"Brother Lin!"
A shout came from behind. Lin Fan turned to see Chu Zhaotian and Xu Qian running over.
’Perfect timing.’
He reached into Chu Zhaotian’s pocket. With a thought, four silver-white auto-injectors materialized inside.
Chu Zhaotian felt something appear in his pocket out of thin air.
Before he could react in surprise, Lin Fan grabbed his hand, pressed it against his pocket, and whispered urgently in his ear,
"Don’t look until you’re home! Remember, only use these if you’re in absolute danger! Now go back!"
Although he didn’t know what all the chaos was about,
he understood instantly. It didn’t matter what the objects were; what mattered was the trust Lin Fan had placed in him!
He nodded firmly, and without a moment’s hesitation, he grabbed Xu Qian and turned, sprinting for home with all his might...
Lin Fan had given him four [Wild Potions (Small)]. He had ten of these potions in total, and since he could only use one per hour anyway...
’What kind of fight lasts an hour?’
He’d long wanted to test if the potions worked on other people but never had the chance. In the current chaos, he couldn’t afford to be picky. He’d just consider it an insurance policy...
"All of you, fall back! If any more zombies come out, take care of them!"
Lin Fan’s tone left no room for argument. He himself, however, hefted his spear and advanced to meet the two approaching zombies.
He swung the iron spear in a clean arc, and a zombie’s head instantly exploded!
[600/600]!
The moment he killed the zombie, his Life Value rose to 600.
He suddenly felt all his muscles contract violently, and he momentarily lost control of his body.
Before he could kill the second one, his whole body convulsed and he collapsed to his knees. The iron spear fell from his grasp, landing with a dull thud...
Chu Zhaotian and Xu Qian had already started running for home the moment Lin Fan finished speaking, leaving only Liu Bin and his men behind.
Although he didn’t know what was wrong, Liu Bin saw the zombie was now only a meter away from Lin Fan, who was still kneeling and unable to get up.
He immediately snatched a spear from the man next to him and charged forward to save him.
But he had barely taken two steps when he saw Lin Fan move...
He watched as Lin Fan shakily raised an arm, extended a single finger, and poked the zombie’s chest...
The instant they made contact, something happened that completely defied his understanding!
The finger plunged into the zombie as if it were a block of tofu!
It pierced straight through the zombie’s sternum!
’That was a bone they needed a running start with a spear to break through!’
"This..."
But then, something even more bizarre happened!
The moment after the finger pierced the zombie’s sternum, a strange power erupted from it, tearing the zombie’s upper body apart. Foul blood splattered everywhere as it was ripped into four pieces...
Liu Bin, who had only managed two steps, froze in place...
He stared at the figure shrouded in a mist of blood...
’This guy isn’t a martial arts master...’
’He’s a sect’s founding ancestor...’
