Chapter 61: Descent of a God
Lin Fan casually picked off the few remaining thugs clinging to the guardrails with a few more curved shots.
As a wave of screams vanished into the zombie hordes, the surrounding streets were devoid of living people.
From the buildings lining both sides of the road, anxious gazes shot out from behind windows, fixed on the street below.
They didn’t see the "invisible" Lin Fan on the van’s roof, only the tide of zombies that had poured out from behind the roll-up door, drowning everything in the street...
Hiding in the van, Chu Zhaotian and Xu Qian clamped their hands over their mouths, trembling in fear. No matter how horrific the screams outside, they didn’t dare to look up.
Chu Zhaozhao, however, was crouched in the footwell of the front passenger seat. With half her head peeking out, she watched the chaotic street outside.
The once-tense standoff had suddenly devolved into utter bedlam.
She watched the zombies outside gather in small groups to gnaw on some unlucky soul they had caught. The van’s soundproofing was poor, and the incessant sounds of tearing flesh and the screams of those not yet dead made her feel a little sick.
But when she remembered how they had aggressively surrounded their convoy to rob them just moments ago, she almost wanted to laugh. Then, afraid of making a sound that might attract the zombies, she couldn’t. It was an awful feeling.
Upstairs, Su Qing watched the chaos below, her heart racing from tension, to shock, to utter disbelief...
When she saw the villains who had surrounded Lin Fan being chased by zombies, about to die by their mouths, she thought she might feel some pity. But to her surprise, her heart was perfectly calm.
These villains who had terrorized her, forcing her to risk her life by letting zombies into the building, had ultimately died by the mouths of the very zombies she had let in.
’I guess... this counts as getting revenge with my own hands.’
A chaotic sense of bewilderment and a sliver of cold satisfaction crept into her heart at the same time, leaving her at a loss.
All she could do was grip the windowsill tightly and lean out, searching for any sign of Lin Fan.
Though he had vanished at the start of the chaos, Su Qing knew he must be hiding somewhere and would reappear soon.
The screams on the street gradually subsided. Before long, those being eaten by the zombies had also turned into zombies.
Some were missing an arm, the shoulder gone with it; others were missing the bottom half of a leg, with only a shinbone sticking into the ground; and one even had its spine severed, its head lolling on its chest...
The more intact among these new zombies slowly stood up. The ones that had been swarming them, feasting on their flesh, lost their targets and began to wander off in search of new prey.
In the residential buildings on both sides, the light in all the survivors’ eyes dimmed.
"Damn it, it’s all that fucking stutterer’s fault. Taking over the supermarket wasn’t enough, he had to try and rob that guy’s car. Now I guess the guy took him down with him..."
On the second-floor balcony of Building Five, a man peeked out from under his windowsill, looking outside.
Although there were far fewer zombies on the street than before, counting the ones that had just gotten up, there were still twenty or thirty of them.
Forget thirty, they couldn’t even handle ten.
"Sigh... the street is full of zombies again. We can’t get out. We’re finished this time..."
Another man sat with his back against the wall, staring at the few bags of instant noodles he had managed to find in the clothing store across the street, muttering bitterly.
Many others, either alone or with a few strangers, were crammed into first-floor rooms. They didn’t speak to each other, but they could all see the deep despair in each other’s eyes.
"Hey? Look! It’s that guy!"
In another building, on the third floor of Unit Two, a woman who had been looking outside suddenly spoke up, slapping the shoulder of her roommate, who was covering her face in despair.
Her roommate immediately stood up at her words. The two of them crowded the window and looked out. A man in tattered clothes, holding two silvery-white steel pipes, had suddenly appeared on the roof of the previously empty van.
It was the same man who had confronted the thugs earlier!
That man wasn’t dead!
Not only was he not dead, but he was also standing on the roof, stretching his ankles and wrists, as if he was preparing for something!
It wasn’t just the two of them; more survivors in the buildings on both sides had noticed the scene and were now staring out their windows!
A portion of them even knew that it was this man who had lured the zombies away from the building before!
He wasn’t dead! That meant there might still be hope!
...
In less than ten minutes, the thugs—who previously didn’t grant Life Value or drop items—had successfully "leveled up" into regular zombies that did both. What a joyous occasion.
"One, two, three, four..."
A total of 33 red health bars floated in his vision.
Fortunately, the zombies weren’t all clustered together. The dozen or so men had run in every direction, pulling the horde apart into several smaller groups of a few zombies each.
This gave Lin Fan the opportunity to pick them off one by one.
As long as he wasn’t pinned to the ground by dozens of zombies at once, taking on just a few was a piece of cake.
Seeing his energy bar had recovered to [22], he mentally switched out his equipped Invisibility Crystal for an Activation Crystal.
The moment the invisibility effect was lifted, a nearby zombie noticed Lin Fan on the van’s roof. It hadn’t confirmed him as a target yet, but it began to shamble over.
Feeling the activation buff take effect, Lin Fan warmed up and lightly hopped off the van. He gave a nod to Chu Zhaozhao, who was peeking out from inside, then charged straight toward the zombie!
He swung both pipes!
[-230]!
CRACK!
[-300]!
SPLAT!
Lin Fan’s first strike with the pipe snapped the zombie’s neck, and his follow-up swing obliterated its head in mid-air!
Without a moment’s pause after the kill, he immediately turned and rushed toward the next zombie...
...
"One, two, three..."
The woman on the third floor of Unit Two, the first to spot Lin Fan, stared wide-eyed at the scene below, muttering to herself,
"Five, six... Oh my god!"
The man leaped down from the van like a tiger pouncing into a flock of sheep. The zombies, who had seemed as vicious as Demons—the same zombies that took two or three of the thugs working together to kill—were so fragile before him...
Nothing could withstand a single blow from his silver-gleaming steel pipes!
...
At a first-floor window in the building next door, several heads were also huddled together, staring out with wide eyes.
"Nine, ten, eleven..."
"Holy shit..."
"No way, turns out Superman lives in our neighborhood..."
"That’s Doctor Lin! I even went to see him once... my dog, my dog was sick..."
Watching Lin Fan pulping zombie heads like a meat grinder outside the window, the few people hiding inside let out similar exclamations of awe.
"Huh? Oh no! Look!"
One of them suddenly pointed into the distance.
...
"Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen!"
CRACK!
Lin Fan thrust his pipe forward, and the zombie’s head burst like a blackened, rotten tomato!
’That’s the fourth group. About three more to go...’
"Huh?"
For some reason, the three distant groups of zombies, perhaps drawn by the sounds of battle, had merged into one large horde and were now charging toward him!
’That’s gotta be more than a dozen of them...’
He checked his Life Value: [445/475].
’It should be fine...’
Although Lin Fan was muttering to himself, he had no intention of changing his strategy. He just silently equipped the Armor Crystal.
’Let’s give it a try. I still have this, a good chance to test its effect...’
