Chapter 227: Reignited
The door of the lower level holding block opened with a prolonged pneumatic hiss, sliding smoothly back into its frame.
Lin Qing stepped out into the main corridor, her posture tall, calm, and utterly resolute. Walking closely beside her was Su Yun. The heavy physical restraints were completely gone, her wrists bare, her movement unrestricted as she adjusted the collar of her clothes.
She moved with a fluid, natural confidence that looked entirely different from the weary captive who had been brought into the facility.
The two guards stationed at the security gate straightened up instantly, their eyes widening in shock. The guard on the left instinctively reached toward the holster on his belt, his hand hovering near the retention catch as he stared at the former prisoner standing freely beside the Lin Qing.
"Vice-Commander Lin," the guard began, his voice tense and bewildered. "The prisoner from Block C—"
"Stand down," Lin Qing’s voice cut through the air like a honed blade, cold, sharp, and leaving zero room for debate. She paused directly in front of the console, locking eyes with the guard until he lowered his hand completely away from his sidearm.
"Update the security register immediately. Su Yun’s isolation status is rescinded, effective right now."
The guard hesitated for a split second, looking between Lin Qing’s unyielding expression and Su Yun’s quiet, composed face, before nodding sharply. "Understood, ma’am. Updating the log now."
Without waiting for the system to process the terminal entry, Lin Qing turned and led Su Yun down the service hallway toward the primary elevator shaft.
As the lift ascended toward the Command Hub on the upper decks, Su Yun glanced sideways at the walls, taking in the clean, industrial construction of the Research Center. "You carry a lot of weight in this place, Vice-Commander."
Lin Qing offered a tiny, almost imperceptible shift of her jaw, her eyes looking straight ahead at the brass indicator lights. "We earned it. Now we make sure we don’t lose it."
The Command Hub was filled with the rhythmic hum of terminal cooling fans and the quiet, low-frequency chatter of radio monitors tracking perimeter sensors.
Han Zheng stood near the primary map table, his face drawn tight with fatigue as he reviewed the mountain sensor logs with Lu Feng and Dr. Zhou. The holographic projection in the center of the room cast a cool blue light across their faces, showing the surrounding northern ridges and the narrow passes.
The doors of the Command Hub slid open with a soft chime.
When Lin Qing walked in, the room’s atmosphere shifted instantly, but as soon as everyone noticed Su Yun following directly behind her, the low chatter vanished into an abrupt, uncomfortable silence. Lu Feng’s hand dropped to his sidearm, his eyes narrowing in immediate suspicion, while Han Zheng straightened up, his brow pulling into a heavy frown.
"Lin Qing," Han Zheng said slowly, his deep voice carrying a heavy, questioning weight as he stepped around the strategy table. "Care to explain why an unvetted captive is standing in the central nerve center of our base without guards?"
Lin Qing didn’t flinch under the collective scrutiny of the room. She stepped forward, placing herself slightly in front of Su Yun, her posture completely calm and authoritative.
"She isn’t a prisoner," Lin Qing stated clearly, her voice echoing through the quiet hub. "And she isn’t an unvetted stranger."
Lu Feng took a step forward, his jaw tight. "Lin Qing, We don’t know her background, her affiliations, or—"
"I know her," Lin Qing interrupted, her tone dropping into a firm, unshakeable register that caught everyone off guard. She looked directly at Han Zheng, delivering her explanation with absolute conviction. "This morning, while conducting her final assessment in the holding cell, key details brought back a sudden, overwhelming trigger. My amnesia—the mental blockage that wiped my past—is gone."
Han Zheng froze, his eyes widening slightly. "Your memories are back?"
"Yes," Lin Qing replied without a moment’s hesitation, weaving the lie so seamlessly into the truth that not even the sharpest soldier in the room could spot a flaw. "Su Yun is an old friend of mine from before the apocalypse started. I thought I had lost her long ago during the initial collapse, but seeing her, speaking to her... it restored what was locked away. Her identity is clear. Her loyalty is beyond question. I vouch for her with my life."
Dr. Zhou looked up from her tablet, adjusting her glasses as she studied the two women. "A complete psychological unblocking brought on by a familiar face... it’s rare, but biologically plausible under extreme emotional stress."
Han Zheng stared at Lin Qing for a long, heavy moment. He knew that if she put her name on someone, that word carried absolute weight.
"Fine," Han Zheng exhaled, the tension in his broad shoulders relaxing slightly as he nodded toward the strategy table. "If you vouch for her, then we accept her presence. But we have bigger problems brewing. Our long-range acoustic sensors caught unusual movements two hours ago."
"I know," Lin Qing said, stepping directly up to the holographic map table. "We know what’s out there."
Su Yun stepped up beside her, placing her hands lightly on the edge of the metallic console. "The Apex has deployed its assets. They have ten hounds stationed in these mountain sectors."
Captain Lu Feng frowned, stepping closer to the projection. "Ten? What kind of troops are we talking about? Standard mechanized infantry?"
"No," Su Yun answered, her tone turning quiet and serious. "Modified power-holders specifically engineered by the syndicate for high-intensity tracking and heavy breach operations. They don’t fight like mindless wasteland mutants—they operate with strict tactical coordination. If they launch a full strike on this pass, they won’t just hit the main gate; they will test every blind spot this facility has."
Lin Qing didn’t wait for everyone to process the shock. She reached down, her fingers sweeping across the control panel to re-center the holographic display. As the person who had memorized every inch of the Research Center’s layout, she immediately began re-configuring the base’s defensive overlays right in front of them.
"Our current defense plan is completely wrong for this type of threat," Lin Qing said, her hands moving rapidly across the interface, bringing up Sub-Level 4, the outer mountain ridges, and the primary ventilation shafts. "We are relying too much on static wall turrets and funneling enemies into the main blast gate. Against modified power-holders, a static defense is just a target waiting to be dismantled."
She highlighted the high cliffside ridges overlooking the valley. "We need to expand our perimeter outward. Su Yun and I analyzed their habits—Apex hounds rely heavily on energy tracking and thermal signatures to locate primary targets."
Lin Qing tapped a series of commands, creating three glowing red zones along the rocky crags above the base. "Instead of sitting behind the steel gates waiting for a breach, we set up overlapping kill zones on the upper ridges. We deploy low-frequency decoy beacons here, here, and here—using spare battery cores to mimic high-density signatures. When their scout team moves in to measure the base’s energy footprint, they’ll be drawn right into the crossfire of our hidden sniper positions."
Han Zheng leaned over the table, his eyes tracking the new lines Lin Qing was drawing across the terrain. A look of genuine admiration and surprise flashed across his face. The plan was aggressive, highly disciplined, and took full advantage of the treacherous mountain geography.
"You’re turning the entire valley into an ambush corridor," Han Zheng observed, a slow nod approving the shift. "Using the terrain to split their strike teams before they even reach the outer wall."
"Precisely," Lin Qing said, locking eyes with him. "Su Yun knows how they think, and we know how this base is built. Together, we can lock down these mountains so tightly that even ten hounds won’t be able to step a foot inside."
Captain Lu Feng let out a low whistle, looking at the revamped map. "It’s bold... but it gives us a real fighting chance."
"Implement it immediately," Han Zheng ordered, turning toward Lu Feng and Sun Hao. "Reassign Squads to the upper ridge positions. Begin setting up the decoy beacons on the double. Lin Qing, take Su Yun to the armory and get her fully equipped. She will need it if she is joining in."
"Understood," Lin Qing replied before turning to leave the hub.
The armory was quiet, filled with the heavy, metallic smell of gun oil, polished steel, and rubber sealants. Long racks of high-caliber rifles, tactical vests, and specialized combat gear lined the reinforced walls under bright overhead strip lights.
Lin Qing walked down the central aisle, pulling a set of high-grade, black armor from the secondary locker. She handed the chest piece, shoulder guards, and utility belt over to Su Yun, who took them with practiced, familiar ease.
Su Yun strapped the vest over her chest, tightening the side buckles with a crisp, snapping sound that felt incredibly nostalgic to both of them. She reached out, unholstering a standard-issue 9mm sidearm from the bench, checking the slide, the chamber, and the magazine balance in three fluid, continuous motions before holstering it smoothly at her hip.
Lin Qing watched her, a faint, soft smile touching the corner of her lips for the first time all day. "Fits well."
"Not bad" Su Yun replied lightly, adjusting the wrist guards before picking up a sleek assault rifle from the rack and locking a full magazine into place. She raised the weapon, sighting down the optic toward the far wall before lowering it back to her side. "You handled that room really well, Qing. That cover story was flawless."
Lin Qing walked over, picking up her own rifle and slinging it across her shoulder. "It wasn’t entirely a lie. You are my oldest friend. And I did lose you."
Su Yun’s playful expression softened, her eyes looking at Lin Qing with deep, quiet warmth. She stepped closer, bumping her shoulder gently against Lin Qing’s in a familiar, comforting gesture from their past. "Well, you found me again. And this time, we have a base, an armory, and a valley full of traps waiting for them."
Lin Qing reached out, gripping Su Yun’s arm tightly, feeling the solid, living reality of her comrade standing beside her in full armor. The lingering ghosts of her nightmare and the heartbreak in the ash were completely gone.
"Let’s go secure the ridge," Lin Qing said, her voice steady and filled with absolute confidence.
Together, side-by-side, they walked out of the armory and headed toward the upper lift, ready to face whatever storm the Apex was sending into the mountains.
