Chapter 240: The Cipher Vault
The dim emergency lights cast an eerie, blood-red haze across the vast interior of the automated supply depot. Cold air heavy with the sharp, metallic tang of machine grease, ozone, hydraulic fluid, and frozen steel hung completely motionless in the subterranean bay as Lin Qing, Han Zheng, and Song Yan moved down the central aisle between towering rows of industrial shelving units.
Their boots made almost no sound against the floor, their eyes scanning every dark shadow, stacked pallet, and overhead steel beam for hidden motion sensors or automated defensive turrets.
They pressed deeper into the facility’s lower storage sector, passing racks of standardized ammunition crates, spare rifle components, tactical armor plates, and long-term preserved field rations, heading straight toward the far wall where the primary high-value asset vault was built directly into the solid granite cliff face.
Stopping in front of the massive vault, Han Zheng raised his flashlight, illuminating a thick, reinforced blast door sealed tight by a heavy electromagnetic lock mechanism. Embedded beside the dark steel frame was a terminal featuring a high-density security keypad, an optical scanner, and an offline cipher lock displaying a glowing red status indicator light.
"Heavy armor plating," Song Yan noted, stepping up to examine the seam with a furrowed brow, his fingers trailing over the cold, frosted metal.
"Unless we use heavy breaching charges—which will definitely trigger every acoustic sensor in a ten-mile radius and bring the entire mountain down on our heads—we aren’t cutting through this steel anytime soon."
Lin Qing stepped up to the terminal, inspecting the serial model number laser-engraved on the lower corner of the metal casing. She tapped her earpiece, opening a direct encrypted channel to the ridge overwatch positioned high above the valley floor.
"Su Yun, do you copy?" Lin Qing asked softly into her comms unit, her voice steady and quiet against the faint hum of static. "We’re standing in front of the primary asset vault inside the depot. It’s locked behind a heavy cipher terminal, series designation Apex-7."
Up on the cold, wind-swept granite ridge twelve hundred meters away, Su Yun rested her cheek against her rifle’s cheek-rest, her eye fixed behind her high-powered optical scope. Her fingers rested lightly on the rifle frame as her mind instantly flashed back to her time spent inside the Apex facility.
During those long, dark weeks operating near their technical crews, she had overheard the logistics staff discussing standard maintenance procedures for forward installations.
"Apex-7 series?" Su Yun’s voice crackled softly through the earpiece, carrying a focused, intense edge. "Qing, those technical crews used standard fallback override codes for automated outposts. The logistics officers never updated them because they assumed no outside force could breach the valley defenses. I don’t have the exact sequence memorized, but I know the structure."
"Give us what you’ve got," Lin Qing said, her fingers hovering inches above the glowing numeric keypad. "We’ll test the sequences."
"Try the Sector 9 regional prefix first," Su Yun instructed over the comms link. "Punch in 9-0-1-4-5-2, then hit the override key."
Lin Qing punched the six digits into the keypad one by one. The terminal hummed for a brief second before a sharp, buzzing alarm sounded, and the indicator light flashed a harsh red.
"Error code," Lin Qing reported calmly. "Next sequence."
"Alright, try the standard emergency maintenance cipher," Su Yun said, her voice tight as she racked her memory. "8-8-2-1-9-0."
Lin Qing entered the second sequence. Again, the terminal let out a sharp, discordant beep-beep and rejected the input, causing Song Yan to shift uncomfortably behind her, his hand tightening on his weapon.
"One more try before the terminal locks down for a three-minute security cycle," Lin Qing warned quietly into the earpiece.
"Wait... try the regional supply depot fallback code," Su Yun urged, her tone suddenly decisive. "9-0-4-7-2-8. That’s the sequence the technicians used when cycling the armory doors during supply drops."
Lin Qing pressed the keys in steady, precise succession: 9 - 0 - 4 - 7 - 2 - 8, followed by the green manual override key.
For an agonizing second, the terminal hummed softly, its internal processor running the verification sequence while the red indicator light flickered erratically.
Then, a loud, sharp clunk echoed through the vault frame as the electromagnetic clamps released. The heavy steel deadbolts retracted with a deep metallic grinding sound, and the massive vault door slowly slid open on heavy industrial rollers, revealing the brightly lit, temperature-controlled storage interior beyond.
"That’s the one!" Su Yun let out a breath over the comms link. "Door’s unlocked, Vice-Commander. Consider that a payback gift from my time in the Apex."
"Great work, Yun," Lin Qing smiled faintly into her comms. "Hold your position and keep your eyes on the pass."
Inside the illuminated vault, the squad found exactly what they had traveled down the thawing mountain pass to secure.
Mounted on heavy industrial racks were three high-density lithium power cores glowing with faint blue status indicators, two heavy hydraulic repair kits designed for gate seals, and three sealed surgical medical crates stocked with military-grade anti-infection sera, surgical tools, and field trauma supplies.
The sheer value of the loot was staggering—enough to fully restore the Research Center’s damaged blast gates and stock the medical bay for months of continuous operations.
Lin Qing stepped up to the primary hydraulic repair kit, reaching out with both hands to pull the heavy steel case off its mounting cradle. But the moment the heavy crate left the shelf, a hidden weight-pressure sensor built into the steel frame triggered an automated internal security protocol.
Above the vault door, a harsh yellow strobe light began to flash silently, and a digital terminal screen on the wall flickered to life, displaying a bright red countdown timer: 04:00.
"Silent internal alarm!" Lin Qing called out sharply, her posture immediately locking into high alert.
"It’s running a local weight-check verification protocol! When that timer hits zero, an un-jammed satellite distress ping will be broadcasted!"
"Four minutes," Han Zheng said, his eyes instantly locking onto the high-value crates lining the vault shelves. "We move now."
"Song Yan, Han Zheng—get these heavy crates to the truck!" Lin Qing ordered crisply. "I’m checking the command desk!"
Rather than taking precious time to carry crates one by one, Han Zheng stepped up to the heavy lithium power cores—each weighing over two hundred pounds of solid metal and dense casing.
He gripped the steel transport handles, his broad, muscular frame tensing as his kinetic aura subtly flared around his shoulders like a faint ripple of compressed air. With immense physical force, he effortlessly hoisted two massive power cores onto his shoulders at once, turning on his heel and sprinting toward the open loading bay door where their truck was idling.
"Song Yan!" Han Zheng shouted back over his shoulder. "Sweep the outer shelves! Don’t leave a single crate behind!"
"On it!" Song Yan replied, his eyes flashing with sharp focus as he extended both hands toward the outer storage shelves.
Activating his gravitational energy, a heavy invisible force rippled through the air around him, bending the dim ambient light slightly. The surrounding crates of high-grade armor-piercing ammunition, field rations, spare rifle components, medical dressings, and tactical gear instantly lost their weight, floating several inches off the metal shelves as if suspended in zero gravity.

With a decisive, sweeping motion of his arms, Song Yan guided a floating swarm of a dozen heavy supply crates through the air, ushering them out of the vault and directing them straight into the open flatbed of the transport truck.
While Han Zheng hauled the heaviest structural components and power cores, and Song Yan swept the remaining supply racks completely clean using his gravitational control, Lin Qing darted toward the primary administrative desk tucked in the corner of the vault.
On the metal desk lay several thick, waterproof binders stamped with the Apex emblem, alongside a stack of encrypted hard-copy dispatch logs and regional patrol manifests.
Knowing that intel on anything related to Apex was worth its weight in gold, Lin Qing didn’t bother sorting through them. She swept the entire pile of physical files directly into her waterproof pack, zip-fastening it tight across her chest.
She then spun toward the wall terminal. Pulling her knife, she jammed the carbon-steel blade between the terminal casing and forcefully pulled a cluster of diagnostic wires free. She manually short-circuited the main logic board, stalling the software clock and forcing the timer to glitch and freeze erratically at 00:45.
"I bought us a few extra seconds, but the logic board is going to fry and trigger the distress ping anyway!" Lin Qing called out, pulling her sidearm as she backed out of the vault toward the truck. "Wrap it up!"
Song Yan shoved the final cluster of floating ration crates and ammo boxes deep into the truck bed, securing them with a heavy ratchet tie-down strap, while Han Zheng slammed the last hydraulic seal kit into place beside the power cores.
"Truck is fully loaded!" Song Yan yelled, jumping into the rear flatbed alongside the towering mountains of looted gear. "Every last box is packed!"
Lin Qing vaulted into the front passenger seat just as Han Zheng slammed into the driver’s seat, turning the ignition key. The transport truck’s engine roared fiercely to life, its heavy four-wheel-drive tires spinning against the smooth concrete floor before gripping the surface with explosive power.
Han Zheng slammed his foot onto the accelerator. The truck surged forward like a charging beast, smashing straight through the depot’s lowered steel perimeter gate in a shower of brilliant blue sparks and twisted, tearing metal.
As the truck roared out of the ravine and onto the muddy valley road, the terminal inside the depot finally shorted out completely, firing its silent beacon into a dead frequency as the strike team sped away, laden with high-grade supplies and critical intel to reinforce the Research Center for the coming war.
