Chapter 229: War Room Assembly
The doors of the Command Hub slid open with a sharp, echoing hiss, letting in the biting mountain chill that still clung heavy to the tactical gear of the returning ridge team.
Lin Qing led the way into the warm, brightly lit nerve center of the Research Center, flanked closely by Su Yun, Old Wang, and Sun Hao.
The central hub was humming with suppressed tension, bathed in the cool light emitted by the primary holographic strategy table situated in the middle of the room. Gathered around the detailed terrain display were the key operational leaders of the sanctuary base: Han Zheng, Lieutenant Chen, Lu Feng, and Song Yan.
As the boots of the ridge team clicked against the flooring, the quiet chatter circulating through the hub instantly died down into total silence.
"Report," Han Zheng ordered immediately, his deep voice cutting through the ambient hum of the terminal cooling fans. His eyes swept over the group, taking in their clothes and their steady, unruffled composure.
Sun Hao stepped forward without delay, pulling a compact data drive from his utility belt and sliding it directly into the main terminal slot on the edge of the console. "We successfully deployed all three low-frequency decoy beacons across the northern crags, locked at four-point-two megahertz. Exactly twenty minutes after Beacon Two went live, our diagnostic receivers picked up an active directional sweep coming directly out of Sector 7."
The central holographic projection shifted smoothly, displaying a high-resolution, three-dimensional topographical map of the surrounding mountain range. A bright red radar arc flickered methodically over Peak Seven, three miles across the canyon.
"It was an Apex vanguard scout," Lin Qing added, her voice smooth, measured, and authoritative as she leaned her hands against the edge of the map table. "Equipped with specialized long-range optical gear and active energy-tracing sensors. They logged the fake high-density signature resting on the upper ridge and fell back under thermal camouflage to transmit those exact coordinates directly to their command."
Lieutenant Chen crossed his arms over his chest, a grim, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "So the bastards bit the hook."
"They bit it clean," Su Yun confirmed, her tone exceptionally calm and analytical as she stepped up directly beside Lin Qing. "Apex tactical doctrine dictates that when an advance scout locates an isolated, high-tier energy signature in rough terrain, they don’t waste time launching a frontal assault against a static, subterranean bunker. They send specialized strike teams—their hounds—to pincer the isolated signature, clear the high ground, and cut off potential retreat routes before ever moving on the primary structure."
Han Zheng stared intently at the glowing holographic terrain map, his mind rapidly calculating approach vectors, sightlines, and response times. "Which means we have a brief, highly critical operational window before their main strike element moves into the pass. They firmly believe our strongest power-holders are scattered, exposed, and completely unprepared on the upper crags."
"And that is precisely where we turn these mountains into a meat grinder," Lin Qing said, her slender fingers sweeping across the interface to highlight three specific, narrow choke points along the steep canyon trail. "We don’t sit inside the blast gates waiting to be besieged. We restructure our interior and exterior defense lines right now to take full advantage of their mistake."
Song Yan stepped closer to the console, his hands resting on the rim as he examined the highlighted cliffside terrain. "What do you need from us, Vice-Commander?"

"Your gravity manipulation, Song Yan, combined with Xiao Li’s stone hardening," Lin Qing replied without a moment’s hesitation. "I want you two stationed on the upper western ridge within thirty minutes. You are going to construct concealed, heavy stone barricades directly along the choke points above the decoy sites. If their hounds attempt to flush out Beacon Two, you drop the cliffside directly onto their advance vector."
Song Yan nodded firmly, his expression turning iron-clad. "Consider it done. We’ll anchor the rock faces so tightly that even a direct explosive blast won’t dislodge them until we manually release the gravitational weight."
Lin Qing turned her focus smoothly toward Lieutenant Chen. "Chen, take Guo Jian and Da Yong to the narrow goat paths along the eastern approach. I want high-heat incendiary traps concealed inside the natural rock crevices. Work directly with Da Yong to set up remote detonators using spare high-grade fuel cells."
Lieutenant Chen’s hands sparked with a brief, intense micro-burst of thermal flame that flickered brightly over his knuckles before vanishing into thin air. "If any of those modified freaks step onto that eastern ledge, I’ll cook them inside their own armored suits."
"Keep the traps fully concealed," Su Yun interjected sharply, her eyes locking with Lieutenant Chen’s. "Apex hounds carry specialized thermal-damping gear. Don’t detonate on the very first shadow or point-element you see—wait until the entire squad enters the narrow funnel, then hit the rear guard first to cut off their escape vector."
Lieutenant Chen looked at Su Yun, recognizing the weight behind her instruction, and offered a short, approving nod. "Understood. We’ll let the front line walk deep into the pocket before we light it up."
"What about the base interior?" Lu Feng asked, leaning his upper body over the holographic console. "If a secondary element bypasses the ridge traps entirely and pushes straight down the valley road toward the main blast gate?"
"That’s where your unit and the remaining guards hold the line," Han Zheng answered, seamlessly taking over the distribution with practiced authority. "Lu Feng, deploy your squad at the entry ramp immediately. Set up heavy turrets behind the secondary blast doors. If anything breaks through the valley approach, they will hit a solid wall of overlapping crossfire before they ever reach the living quarters."
"Copy that, Commander," Lu Feng said, turning on his heel to signal Zhao Lei and his squad members to begin transferring heavy ordnance from the central armory into position.
While the primary squad leaders moved out of the hub to execute their respective orders, Lin Qing, Han Zheng, and Su Yun walked swiftly towards the bank of monitors which were flickering with real-time telemetry coming in from every active sector of the Research Center.
Sitting at the primary diagnostic console alongside Sun Hao and Zhao Lei was Chen Yan, the energy-tracker recruit recently brought in from Block C.
Chen Yan looked up as the Vice-Commander entered the room, her face pale with absolute concentration as a faint, translucent aura of soft, shimmering energy hovered lightly around her temples.
"Status on the perimeter grid, Chen Yan?" Lin Qing asked, stepping up to stand directly behind her operator seat.
"The decoy signals are holding perfectly steady, Vice-Commander," Chen Yan reported, pointing a slender, trembling finger at three distinct blue pulses glowing on her main monitor screen. "My energy-tracing perception is linked directly with Sun Hao’s primary sensor array. Right now, the northern pass appears quiet to basic radar, but the ambient energy readings are fluctuating wildly. The atmospheric pressure across the upper ridge is dropping rapidly—classic signs of high-density, artificially compressed energy signatures gathering in the upper tree line."
"How many individual signatures can you pick up?" Han Zheng asked, his deep voice low and heavy in the small room.
Chen Yan closed her eyes for a brief second, extending her sensory reach through the outdoor relay beacons. "I can’t pinpoint individual headcounts yet due to the heavy mountain fog and their active dampening field, but there are at least four distinct, extremely dense energy clusters hovering just outside our long-range perimeter line. They’re moving in a tight, synchronized formation...disciplined, and dangerously fast."
"The Apex hounds," Su Yun murmured, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Lin Qing. "They’re forming up their primary assault squads to sweep the ridge."
"Sun Hao," Lin Qing ordered smoothly, "keep the decoy beacon frequencies rotating every ten minutes on the mark so their scanners don’t detect the automated loop. Chen Yan, the moment any of those energy clusters cross the designated red line, broadcast a silent, high-priority ping directly to my HUD and Old Wang’s rifle optics."
"Understood, Vice-Commander," Chen Yan replied, her fingers flying across the terminal keys as she locked the precise tracking parameters into place.
With every squad assignment delivered and every sector transitioning into maximum operational alert, a profound, heavy silence settled over the vast underground facility.
In the living sectors, the non-combat survivors, the medical staff, and the children were locked securely behind thick doors. On the upper crags, the squad leaders were taking their positions in the freezing, swirling mist, hidden silently among the rocks behind stone barricades and concealed incendiary lines.
Lin Qing, Han Zheng, and Su Yun stepped back out onto the high observation ramp overlooking the main subterranean transit tunnel.
Han Zheng checked the kinetic charge meter built into his heavy wrist gauntlet, the blue indicator light glowing brightly at absolute maximum capacity. He turned his head to look at his wife, his posture rigid and ready for immediate war, yet his eyes holding a quiet, unwavering warmth that only she could see.
"Every squad is in position," Han Zheng said quietly, his voice echoing softly against the concrete walls. "The net is fully cast."
Lin Qing adjusted the sling of her rifle, checking the optics one last time before locking a fresh magazine into place with a clean, crisp, metallic click. Beside her, Su Yun stood ready, her face calm and completely devoid of fear.
"They came into these mountains hunting easy prey," Lin Qing said, her voice dropping into an iron, unyielding register as she looked out into the dark, misty pass. "Let’s show them what happens when they step into our domain."
