The cold mountain drizzle had turned the valley floor into a churned sea of dark mud, melting slush, and thick, infected blood. Surrounded on all sides by the shrieking red-cores and fast-moving yellow-cores, the six Apex Hounds were losing their tactical cohesion.

Up on the high observation ramp, Lu Feng rested his thumbs against the firing switches of the twin kinetic turrets, his eyes fixed on the heavy ballistic shield below. Beside him, Lin Qing, Old Wang and Su Yun stood like statues behind their rifles, their scopes tracking every shift in the Hounds’ formation.

Down in the mud, the heavy assault Hound grunted as another yellow-core slammed its clawed hands into his cracked tower shield. The bright yellow energy stone in the mutant’s sternum flared violently, sending a wave of kinetic pressure through the metal that forced the heavy Hound’s boots deeper into the earth.

"Commander! Our perimeter is collapsing!" the heavy Hound roared over their comms, his voice distorted by suit static. "The left flank is dry on primary ammo! If we stay pinned in this mud, these freaks will drown us in numbers!"

At the center of the formation, the Apex Commander—a tall, lean figure wearing body armor scarred from countless black-ops engagements—evaded a lunging red-core with a swift, mechanical sidestep. In one fluid motion, he drew a high-caliber sidearm and put two heavy rounds through the red stone in its chest, shattering it in a burst of crimson sparks.

The Commander’s crimson visor swept across the valley. More red-cores were already sliding down the muddy banks from the upper karst caves, drawn by the endless gunfire. The Research Center’s blast gates stood just eighty meters away, completely intact, while his squad was getting ground down in an unholy crossfire.

"We aren’t dying in a trench for wasteland mutants," the Apex Commander declared, his voice cold, ruthless, and entirely devoid of hesitation. He turned his visor toward the Hound on his far left flank—a younger operative whose leg had been shredded and whose kinetic energy reservoir was wildly unstable. "Vanguard Four. Execute Clearance Protocol Alpha."

Vanguard Four froze for a fraction of a second. Underneath his goggles, his eyes widened slightly, but the indoctrination runs deep in the modified soldiers. He offered a single, rigid nod.

"Understood, Commander."

"Everyone else, anchor behind the heavy shield!" the Commander barked.

Vanguard Four stepped out from the defensive ring, deliberately exposing himself to the oncoming horde. He tossed his rifle aside and ripped open the seals on his chest harness, exposing the modified power core embedded directly over his sternum.

He dropped his lower-face respirator, taking one last deep breath of the mountain air as dozens of red-cores and two yellow-cores swarmed toward him, sensing the sudden surge of massive energy.

"For the Apex", Vanguard Four spat through bloodied teeth.

He forcibly overloaded his internal energy core.

The power stone over his chest turned from a faint crimson into a blinding, white-hot glare. Arc light danced across his skin, his muscles swelling and veins turning jet-black as the unstable energy reached critical mass.

BOOM!

A shockwave of compressed kinetic force and superheated plasma exploded outward from Vanguard Four’s body.

The blast tore through the valley like a localized bomb. A blinding ring of white and orange fire expanded in a 360-degree arc, instantly incinerating the front line of red-core runners and vaporizing the muddy slush into a thick, towering cloud of blinding white steam. The sheer concussive pressure shattered the yellow energy stones of the nearby yellow-cores, blasting their mutated bodies fifty feet through the air like ragdolls.

The blast didn’t just wipe out the infected—it tore through the Hounds’ own ranks.

The two Hounds standing closest to Vanguard Four’s flank were caught in the immediate secondary shockwave. Their shields buckled instantly under the massive overcharge; one was thrown violently into the granite canyon wall, his skull cracking against the stone, while the second was engulfed in the white-hot plasma blast, his armor melting into his flesh as he collapsed lifeless into the burning mud.

Behind the shield, the Apex Commander and the unit braced with everything they had. The heavy unit slammed his boots deep into the dirt, channeling his remaining power to anchor the shield, but the kinetic wave was too massive. The shield snapped at its primary weld point, shattering into twisted metal shrapnel and hurling both him and the Commander backward through the mud.

When the deafening roar finally faded, the valley fell into a eerie, terrifying silence.

The thick cloud of white steam and black smoke slowly drifted away on the icy mountain wind. The horde of mutated infected that had choked the approach road just moments ago was completely gone—turned to ash, charred bone, and scattered embers across a scorched crater of baked mud.

Up on the high observation ramp, the shockwave rattled the steel parapets. Lu Feng instinctively shielded his eyes, while Lin Qing and Su Yun held their ground, their scopes immediately cutting through the dissipating steam to assess the carnage below.

"What a psycho..." Lu Feng muttered, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at the smoking crater. "He blew himself up just to clear the road!"

"That’s Apex conditioning," Su Yun said grimly, her voice tight as her crosshairs swept the wreckage. "They don’t value life—not even their own. They view themselves as disposable weapons."

"Count the bodies!" Lin Qing commanded, her voice slicing through the shock.

"Three down!" Su Yun reported rapidly. "Vanguard Four vaporized himself. Two caught in the collateral blast on the left flank—both dead. That leaves three!"

Through the thinning steam, three figures slowly pulled themselves up from the scorched mud.

The Apex Commander stood first, his armor cracked and smoking, his visor shattered on one side to reveal a cold, scarred face bleeding from the temple. Beside him, the heavy assault Hound dragged himself up, his shield destroyed, leaving him holding only his heavy automatic cannon with a scorched forearm.

The third survivor—a agile combat specialist with blood dripping from his vest—drew a long vibro-blade, his breathing ragged but his stance remaining deathly lethal.

They were battered, bruised, and bleeding, their ranks cut in half, but the three remaining Apex Hounds were far from defeated. Their eyes burned with pure, unadulterated malice as they locked onto the main blast gates of the Research Center, just forty meters away.

"No more games," the Apex Commander growled, spitting a mouthful of dark blood into the mud. He raised his sidearm and pointed it directly at the heavy steel gates. "Breach that door!"

The heavy Hound raised his automatic cannon, unleashing a brutal, heavy barrage of armor-piercing rounds directly against the primary hydraulic seals of the blast gate.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Sparks erupted across the heavy steel doors as the high-caliber rounds impacted, denting the outer reinforced plating and causing the heavy locking pins inside the wall to groan under the violent kinetic transfer.

"They’re targeting the hydraulic seals!" Captain Lu Feng shouted from the ramp, slamming his hands onto the turret controls. "Opening fire!"

Lu Feng pressed the triggers, and the twin kinetic turrets atop the ramp roared to life, sending a stream of heavy tracer fire cascading down into the valley floor.

The Apex Commander reacted with terrifying speed. Despite his injuries, he raised his palm toward the sky, unleashing a dense, localized barrier that deflected the incoming turret rounds, sending them ricocheting harmlessly off into the canyon walls.

"The turrets can’t get a clean angle through his barrier while they’re tucked right under the gate overhang!" Lu Feng gritted his teeth, sweat dripping down his nose. "They’re in our blind spot!"

BOOM!

The third Hound threw a specialized shaped-breaching charge directly against the center seam of the blast gate, triggering a localized explosion that warped the heavy steel, causing thick gray smoke to pour into the outer entry corridor inside the base.

Inside the command channel, Sun Hao’s voice panicked. "Commander! The outer blast gate seal is down to sixty percent! If they detonate another shaped charge on those warped pins, the hydraulic locks might shear completely!"

Lin Qing looked down at the three remaining Hounds. They were weak, battered, and low on energy, but their combat experience and sheer desperation made them more dangerous than ever. Static defenses and high-angle turret fire weren’t going to finish this.

Han Zheng stepped up to the edge of the observation ramp. His energy flared to life, a aura swirling around his body and causing his coat to snap in the wind. His expression was absolute steel.

"We go down there," Han Zheng said, his deep voice resonating with calm, undeniable authority. "We put an end to this on the ground."

Song Yan stepped up beside Han Zheng, his hands already glowing with a soft, translucent gravitational aura. "I’ll lower us down directly behind their advance line."

Lin Qing turned to her husband, her sharp eyes locking with his. There was no hesitation or fear between them—only the unspoken trust of two warriors who had survived the end of the world together.

"Su Yun, Old Wang and I will stay up here on the catwalks," Lin Qing said, her fingers resting firmly on her assault rifle. "We’ll cover your blind spots, call out their power charges, and pick off any openings in their armor the second you break their guard."

"Keep Lu Feng and the heavy gunners focused on the pass," Han Zheng nodded to her, his eyes fixed on his wife. "Don’t let anything else creep up from the valley."

"Go," Lin Qing said softly, a sharp, confident smile touching her lips. "Bring them down."

Song Yan slammed his palms together, extending a wide, controlled gravitational field around himself and Han Zheng. The air around them shimmered as gravity inverted, floating both heavy power-holders smoothly over the high railing of the observation ramp.

Down below, the three remaining Apex Hounds were prepping their second heavy breaching charge against the warped blast gates, unaware that the true strength of the Research Center was descending directly behind them.
