Chapter 234: Shadows from the Dark
The cold steel bar of the high observation railing bit painfully into Lin Qing’s back.
Above her, the agile Hound pressed his forearm directly against her sternum, pinning her firmly against the forty-foot drop down into the muddy valley. With his other hand, he held the high-frequency vibro-blade angled downward—its energetic, humming edge hovering less than half an inch from her skin.
"Move a single muscle," the Hound whispered again, his raspy voice distorted by the comms static inside his lower mask, "and I’ll bleed you before your Commander even turns around."
Lin Qing didn’t flinch. Her breathing remained rhythmic, deep, and measured. Even with the lethal blade humming near her throat, her instincts honed from years of elite special ops combat took complete control over her body.
She didn’t panic, nor did she make a desperate, reckless struggle that would force him to drive the blade home. Instead, her eyes locked straight onto the dark, sensor-lined lens of his shattered visor, analyzing every subtle shift in his stance, weight distribution, and grip.
"You’re out of options," Lin Qing said, her voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register that didn’t hold a single tremor of fear. "Your team is dying in the mud below. You think holding a knife to my neck changes the outcome of this fight?"
"It changes everything," the Hound growled, his gloved fingers tightening on the hilt of the vibro-blade. "One shout, and they drop their guard. You’re my ticket out of this canyon."
Down on the valley floor below, the brutal clash continued unabated. Heavy kinetic shockwaves exploded through the thick gray steam as Han Zheng traded crushing, high-speed strikes with the Apex Commander.
Twenty yards away, Song Yan’s gravitational field groaned under immense pressure, locking the heavy assault Hound against the jagged granite cliff face while mud and melting ice splashed in every direction. Neither of them knew what was happening forty feet above their heads on the blind edge of the catwalk.
Lu Feng, Old Wang and Su Yun remained focused on the ground fight, their rifles rested on the forward railing, calling out directional cues into their headsets.
"Lu Feng, watch the Commander’s left flank!" Su Yun called out over the radio, completely unaware that behind her, the ramp guard lay dead in a pool of blood near the open secondary access door.
The agile Hound leaned in closer, his weight pressing Lin Qing harder against the cold steel railing. "Call off your Commander," he demanded, his blade inching dangerously close to her collarbone. "Now!"
Lin Qing subtly shifted her stance, anchoring her boots against the metal grating to prepare for a split-second counter-strike. But as the Hound began to press the humming blade downward, her mysterious, intangible luck—that unexplainable phenomenon that always seemed to tip the odds in her favor during critical life-or-death emergencies—triggered.
As the Hound applied pressure, the vibrating frequency of the blade caught on the edge of a loose steel rivet protruding from Lin Qing’s tactical vest buckle.
Instead of slicing forward, the high-frequency energy discharged violently against the metal rivet with a sharp, blinding spark. The unexpected energy feedback pulsed back into the weapon’s hilt, momentarily numbing the Hound’s fingers and causing his hand to jerk upward for a fraction of a second.
The blade missed her throat completely.
In that exact microsecond of stuttered momentum, the heavy steel secondary access door swung open another inch.
Standing in the dark threshold of the doorway was Han Ye. His small hands were clenched into tight fists at his sides, his boots covered in slight dust. He had slipped past the residential security posts, guided by the dark energy fluctuations echoing through the facility.
When Han Ye’s eyes locked onto the scene before him—seeing his mother pinned against the high drop with a weapon drawn—his small face turned dead cold.
No fear touched the boy’s eyes. An unholy, pitch-black energy surged up from the soles of his boots.
The dark corners of the steel doorway instantly warped. Deep, ink-black shadow tendrils—thick, fluid, and entirely devoid of light—erupted out from the threshold like living whips. They shot across the cold steel grating of the catwalk at blinding speed, completely silent against the metal floor.
Just as the Hound tried to recover his grip from the electrical shock, the ink-black tendrils lashed around his ankles.
WHIP!
Two more thick shadow tendrils shot up from the floorboards, wrapping violently around his right wrist and forearm. The black tendrils constricted with impossible, crushing force, yanking the Hound’s arm backward with a sharp, violent snap.
The vibro-blade was yanked a full foot away from Lin Qing’s body.
The Hound gasped in utter shock, his head snapping back as the shadows bound his limbs, pinning him against the railing. "What the—?!"
Lin Qing didn’t waste a second questioning the timing or the shadows. The moment the pressure left her chest and the blade was yanked back, her reflexes fired instantly.
Lin Qing drove a sharp elbow straight into the side of the Hound’s neck, shattering his lower mask filter. As he stumbled backward under the combined force of her blow and the pulling shadows, Lin Qing reached down to her holster, drawing her sidearm in one fluid, practiced motion.
She pressed the muzzle of the heavy handgun directly under the unarmored gap beneath the Hound’s jawline.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three rapid, point-blank heavy rounds tore through the Hound’s throat and lower skull.
Sparks, dark blood, and shattered composite armor burst out the back of his helmet. The force of the close-range gunshot, combined with the sudden release of Han Ye’s shadows, sent the Hound’s lifeless body tumbling backward straight over the high steel railing.
The Hound plummeted forty feet down through the steam, crashing with a loud, wet thud into the deep mud of the valley floor below, motionless.
The sudden, loud gunshots echoing right behind them made Lu Feng, Old Wang and Su Yun spin around in sheer shock, their rifles raised instantly.
"What the hell?!" Lu Feng yelled, his eyes widening as he saw the blood-slicked grating and the dead guard by the door. "Where did he come from?!"
"Lin Qing!" Su Yun shouted, stepping forward to check on her, before her eyes drifted down to the doorway.
Little Han Ye stood near the threshold, the dark ink-black shadows slowly receding back into his small boots like melting ink. His face was slightly pale, but his posture remained calm as he looked up at Lin Qing.
Lin Qing re-holstered her sidearm, stepping over the puddle of blood on the grating and kneeling directly in front of the five-year-old. She placed a warm, steady hand on his small shoulder, looking him over to ensure he wasn’t hurt.
"Good job, Han Ye," Lin Qing said softly, her voice steady and full of genuine, quiet praise. "You timed that perfectly."
Han Ye offered a tiny, almost imperceptible nod, stepping closer to her side. Su Yun immediately stepped up to the door, pulling Han Ye behind the reinforced steel entrance into safe cover while Lu Feng secured the doorway.
Down on the valley floor, the sudden, heavy thud of the third Hound’s body crashing into the mud, followed by the gunshot from the high ramp, shattered the Apex Commander’s absolute focus for a fraction of a second.
His eyes flicked toward the fallen corpse of his agile specialist lying in the black sludge, realization slamming into him that his flank maneuver had completely failed.
"Distracted," Han Zheng’s deep voice cut through the cold air.
Han Zheng didn’t miss the opening for a single second.
As the Commander’s head turned, Han Zheng slammed his boots into the mud and stepped directly into the Commander’s guard. His dual-awakened kinetic energy surged to its absolute maximum capacity. A blinding, radiant aura wrapped around Han Zheng’s right fist, the air around his arm warping violently under the compressed kinetic pressure.

Han Zheng drove a kinetic shockwave punch dead center into the Apex Commander’s chest.
BOOM!
The concussive impact sounded like a cannon going off inside the narrow valley. The kinetic energy tore straight through the Commander’s reinforced chest armor, shattering the composite plates and sending a devastating shockwave through his internal organs.
The Apex Commander let out a choked gasp of blood as he was blasted thirty feet backward through the air, crashing hard into the granite cliff face before sliding limply into the freezing mud, completely neutralized.
Twenty yards away, seeing his Commander fall, the heavy assault Hound let out a desperate, enraged roar. He tried to force his heavy cannon upward against the gravitational field, but Song Yan was already finishing the fight.
"Crush!" Song Yan roared, slamming both hands downward toward the earth with everything he had.
The gravitational field expanded fivefold. The sheer, impossible weight of several tons of pressure slammed down onto the heavy unit like a falling mountain. The granite floor cracked beneath his boots, his knees buckled, and his heavy cannon was flattened into the mud.
With a sickening crunch of breaking composite metal and crushed bone, the heavy assault Hound collapsed into the slurry, motionless.
The heavy wind gradually swept through the canyon, carrying away the thick clouds of white steam and black smoke.
The approach road fell into a deep, absolute quiet, save for the steady drip of water cascading down from the thawing crags above. All six Apex Hounds lay dead, their broken armor smoking against the dark mud and melting ice.
Down in the valley, Han Zheng lowered his fists, his breathing steady as he wiped a smear of mud from his jaw. He looked up toward the high observation ramp, where Lin Qing stood at the railing, looking back down at him with a calm smile.
The siege at the blast gates was over. The Research Center had held the line.
