Chapter 225: The Echo of a Name
The darkness inside Lin Qing’s room was absolute, a heavy, suffocating blanket of shadow that isolated her from the quiet hum of the Research Center. Yet, despite the complete stillness of the room, her mind offered no quiet rest, no true escape from the overwhelming weight of the waking world.
The moment her eyes closed and her breathing slowed to a rhythmic, steady hum, her consciousness dissolved into a chaotic, fragmented haze of tangled memories once more.
Disjointed images flashed rapidly behind her eyelids in a violent, disorienting montage that offered no coherent narrative. She saw fractured visions of muddy military trenches slick with dark, torrential rain, metallic corridors, distant alarms blaring through red-lit emergency bays, the deafening, bone-rattling roar of heavy artillery explosions.
And visions of a past that felt entirely foreign—as if belonging to someone else’s life, someone else’s stolen past. Phantom sensations pressed heavily against her chest, a suffocating mix of visceral panic, grief, and sensory static that felt scrambled, mismatched, and impossibly heavy to carry.
Then, the chaotic noise and violent flashes abruptly faded into a suffocating, unnatural quiet.
In the dream, the chaotic, burning battlefield vanished in an instant, replaced by a towering, unbroken wall of solid, oppressive gray stone that blocked her path entirely. It stretched infinitely into the dark void above and around her, cold, seamless, and completely unyielding.
Lin Qing stood entirely alone before the barrier, her breath coming in ragged, white gasps against the freezing air. She pressed her bare hands flat against the rough, freezing surface of the stone, leaning her entire body weight forward as she pushed with all her strength.
The stone resisted her efforts, heavy and threatening to trap her in the suffocating dark forever. She grit her teeth, her muscles straining against the friction, forcing her shoulder deep into the rough barrier. She struggled blindly against the immense, crushing pressure until the stone finally yielded with a deep, grinding shudder, crumbling away into nothingness beneath her touch.
Stepping through the shattered wall, the oppressive darkness instantly melted away, swallowed by a sudden, brilliant flash of golden light.
A cheerful girl stood in the center of a sunlit training courtyard, her dark eyes sparkling with vibrant, unbothered warmth. She was laughing—a bright, clear, musical sound that seemed to chase away the cold—as she tossed a heavy practice target toward Lin Qing, playfully mocking her rigid defensive stance during a high-tempo training drill.
The scene shifted seamlessly, time and space melting away like wax in a flame. The same girl was now sneaking through a quiet, dark corridor at night, sliding a hidden stash of sweet biscuits into Lin Qing’s palm with a mischievous wink before pulling her into a quick, warm embrace.
The girl radiated an overwhelming, unconditional sense of safety, a steady warmth that made Lin Qing’s chest ache with an overwhelming sense of comfort, belonging, and home.
Suddenly, the girl turned away, her bright smile fading as she began to run toward the far edge of the courtyard.
"Wait!" Lin Qing tried to call out, her lungs expanding, but her throat tightened violently, producing no sound whatsoever.
She gave chase instantly, her heavy boots pounding against a landscape that was rapidly decaying around them with every step she took.
The bright, sunlit courtyard dissolved into barren dirt and frost, the warm air turning frigid and bitter. The girl’s running figure began to stumble in the distance, her silhouette flickering like a dying flame in a winter gale, until she collapsed onto the dirt far ahead.
Lin Qing sprinted faster, her heart hammering violently against her ribs as she fought through the biting wind, but by the time her boots skidded to a halt in the frost, the cheerful girl was nowhere to be seen.
Everything in the world melted away into a vast, silent void of cold gray ash. The sky above was dead and featureless, devoid of sun or stars, while the ground beneath her feet was composed entirely of soft, pulverized cinders that drifted around her boots like gray snow. Lying face down in the deep ash directly in front of her was a single, motionless body.
Lin Qing’s breath hitched violently in her throat. She slowly dropped to her knees in the cold cinders, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she reached out toward the still form. The suffocating weight of heartbreak pressed down on her chest, heavy, agonizing, and raw. She reached out, her pale fingers brushing past the ash-stained fabric of the dark uniform, and gently flipped the heavy, lifeless body over.
The face staring blankly up at the gray, lifeless sky belonged to the woman from the holding cell.
A blinding, searing spike of pure pain exploded behind Lin Qing’s eyes, as if a white-hot iron needle had been driven directly into the center of her skull, piercing straight through her brain.
Lin Qing’s eyes snapped open. She sat bolt upright on her bed, gasping frantically for air as cold sweat drenched her forehead and soaked through her undershirt. Her head throbbed with an agonizing, rhythmic pulse that made her vision swim violently in the pitch-black room. She pressed the heels of her palms hard against her temples, squeezing her eyes shut as the unbearable headache slowly, excruciatingly receded into a dull, lingering ache behind her eyes.
She sat completely motionless on the edge of the mattress in the dark room for a long time, staring blankly at the floor as a profound, agonizing sadness settled deep, dark, and heavy inside her chest.
Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling hot down her cold, pale cheeks in the pitch blackness, silent and unbidden. She wrapped her arms around her knees, shivering not from the cold, but from an ancient, resurfaced sorrow that tore at her ribs, leaving her feeling hollowed out and completely fragile.
The quiet clatter of utensils echoed softly through the concrete corridors as the Research Center began its early morning cycle. Auxiliary lights along the ceiling flickered from their dim night-mode to a pale, cool daylight frequency, signaling the start of another shift beneath the mountain.
Lin Qing stood directly outside the door of the lower holding block, holding a heavy metal tray lined with a bowl of hot, fresh steamed rice, preserved vegetables, and a steaming cup of dark tea. Her hands trembled slightly against the cold metal rim of the tray, her knuckles white.
She stopped near the threshold, taking a deep, ragged, steadying breath of the cool subterranean air, trying desperately to swallow down the lump in her throat and force the suffocating grief back into the dark depths of her mind.
She raised her security clearance card, swiping it across the scanner. The heavy locking mechanism released its pressure seal with a sharp pneumatic hiss, and the steel slider door groaned open, smooth and mechanical, into the wall frame.
Lin Qing stepped into the quiet cell. She didn’t offer a greeting, nor did she make eye contact with the inhabitant. Her eyes were red-rimmed, heavy with unspoken pain. Without uttering a single word to break the thick stillness of the room, she walked straight over to the small steel table fixed against the far wall and set the food tray down with a quiet, deliberate clink.

The woman was sitting quietly on the edge of her cot, watching Lin Qing’s silent, methodical movements with a touch of quiet curiosity in her eyes. Seeing the hot, steaming meal resting on the table, a faint, amused smile touched her lips, but before she could utter a lighthearted joke about the breakfast service or tease her about her promptness, Lin Qing turned around and stepped directly up to the side of the cot.
Lin Qing reached down and unlocked the physical restraints binding the woman’s wrists to the iron frame. The heavy steel cuffs released with a metallic click, falling loosely onto the dark blanket below.
The woman let out a low, comfortable sigh, slowly standing up to stretch her stiff, sore limbs after the long, cold night. She raised her arms overhead, rolling her shoulders back to work out the lingering tension from sleeping in the restricted quarters.
Before she could lower her arms back to her sides, Lin Qing took a sudden, deliberate step forward.
Without a word of warning, Lin Qing closed the remaining distance between them, reaching out and pulling the woman into a tight, desperate embrace. She wrapped her arms securely around the woman’s shoulders, burying her face into the crook of her neck, holding her with a silent, fierce, and utterly heartbroken intensity that shattered all her usual composure. A tear escaped Lin Qing’s closed eyes, dampening the fabric of the woman’s clothes as her shoulders trembled silently against her.
The woman froze instantly, her raised arms hovering in the air, completely caught off guard by the sudden, overwhelming physical contact and the silent, trembling grief radiating from Lin Qing.
The quiet room fell entirely silent, save for the faint, distant hum of the facility’s primary ventilation unit operating overhead and the ragged, shallow sound of Lin Qing’s breathing.
Over the woman’s shoulder, Lin Qing closed her eyes tight, her chest heaving as she choked back a sob, her voice barely a breath of sound in the cold air—carrying a raw, agonizing heartbreak that sliced cleanly through the quiet room.
"Su Yun..."
