Chapter 22 : Physical World
The thick layer of gray ash coating the southern approach to the citadel did not deform under the footsteps of the three approaching figures. They moved with the eerie, weightless precision of veteran stalkers who had already figured out how to calibrate their agility stats against the friction of the physical world.
Leon Graves stood completely motionless inside the hollow shell of a collapsed brick archway, his charcoal-black duster coat bleeding into the heavy curtains of the surrounding fog. His twin rings of deep violet pupils glowed with a faint, starlight-swallowing light in the dark recesses of his hood. Through the sensory matrix of his Level 2 Ashen Fog, every minor shift in the wind, every vibration of the broken glass beneath their boots, and every spike of their internal mana pools was mapped directly onto the back of his brain.
They were not local survivors.
The man in the lead wore a long, deep crimson trench coat over a vest of reinforced obsidian-scale armor that radiated a dense, physical defensive pressure. His stance was wide, his fingers resting casually on the hilt of a heavy, two-handed broadsword that hummed with a sharp, kinetic flame attribute. According to the system interface hovering at the edge of Leon’s Perception, the man’s tag read Garrison—a Level 12 Blazing Vanguard who currently held the rank of chief enforcer for the southern district’s dominant faction, the Crimson Fist.
To his left and right moved his personal scouts—a lean woman wielding twin recurve mechanical bows that hummed with wind magic, and a gaunt tracker whose fingers were constantly tapping against a floating leather compass container that mapped localized mana fluctuations.
"Hold up," Garrison said, raising a single, heavy leather-gloved hand to halt the line. His voice was a low, gravelly rasp that cut through the quiet hum of the fog. He squinted through the thick gray mist, his eyes darting toward the pristine, monster-free asphalt of the avenue. "The tracking stones are turning blue. The atmospheric density here is double what it was two blocks back. My fire core is struggling to breathe."
The gaunt tracker checked his leather compass, his fingers shaking slightly as the needle spun in erratic, frantic circles. "The ambient spiritual pressure isn’t coming from a dungeon gate, Chief. It’s an active territorial boundary dome. Look at the concrete beneath the ash. There’s zero signs of orc tracks or goblin blood for half a mile. Something has completely sterilized these three blocks."
"It’s not an area," the woman with the bows whispered, her fingers tightening around the mechanical frame of her weapon as she looked up at the silent, looming skyscrapers. "It’s a graveyard. Can you smell that? It tastes like old bone dust and cold metal. My tracking passives are warning me that if we step another ten feet into this mist, our physical attributes will trigger a hard penalty check."
Leon watched them from the deep shadow of the archway, his hand resting loosely inside his sleeve, bare fingers touching the cold, textured grip of his black blade. A cold, razor-sharp smile tugged at the corner of his pale lips beneath his hood.
He knew exactly who the Crimson Fist faction was from his memories of the future timeline. In the original script before his regression, they were a corporate-funded syndicate that had locked down the massive warehouses near the shipping docks, using their early hoard of military weapons and fire-attribute combat classes to extort the weaker survivor camps in the lower boroughs. They were brutal, highly organized, and treated the system apocalypse strictly as a hostile corporate takeover.
They had seen his anonymous level 15 spike on the global leaderboards after the fall of the Void-Stalker Remnant. They had come to investigate, assuming they could corner the mysterious lone player before he could solidify his hold on the central district’s resources.
"Step out," Garrison called out into the fog, his hand sliding up to grip the leather-wrapped hilt of his heavy broadsword, a sharp ripple of orange fire flaring along the steel blade. "We know you’re tracking us through the mist, friend. We’re not here to fight for your sandbags. I’m the chief enforcer for the Crimson Fist. Our director wants to offer the shadow commander of Sector 12 a seat at our central table."
Leon Graves didn’t answer with words. He didn’t waste seconds on corporate introductory dialogue.
He activated his passive trait, allowing his full fifty-foot Calamity Domain to violently expand across the empty crossroads like ink spilled across a clean sheet of paper.
BOOM.
The transition was instantaneous and brutal. The ambient temperature inside the intersection plummeted by twenty degrees in a fraction of a millisecond, turning the damp moisture in the air into falling needles of black frost that hissed as they hit the hot steel of Garrison’s broadsword.
Garrison’s knees violently buckled, his heavy iron boots cracking the concrete beneath his feet as an invisible, ten-ton weight slammed straight down onto his shoulder blades. His Level 12 physical stats were systematically slashed by a brutal forty percent under the passive weight of the domain, his lungs burning as the gray Ashen Fog entered his throat, triggering the passive 15 HP per second decay damage check.
"What... what is this pressure?" the woman with the bows shrieked, dropping her mechanical weapon as she fell straight onto her hands and knees, her nose bleeding onto the dark asphalt as her vitality pool began to leak away into the stone.
The gaunt tracker didn’t even manage to scream. His Constitution stat was too low to handle the sudden, massive spiritual compression of an SSS-rank monarch class. His eyes rolled back into his skull, his physical form slumping onto the concrete tracks like a broken sack of wet leather as his health bar dropped straight to zero within three breaths.

Leon Graves stepped out from the swirling gray mist, the charcoal fabric of his Cloak of the End-Game rippling silently around his leather boots. His new Pauldrons of Finality glowed with a faint, starlight-absorbing black sheen on his shoulders, making his physical frame look immense, heavy, and completely disconnected from the physics of the ordinary world. The twin rings of deep violet light in his eyes flared violently beneath the rim of his dark hood.
Garrison stared up through the dark frost, his teeth chattering violently as his fire-infused steel blade slowly turned dull and gray, the iron turning into brittle, orange rust before his eyes.
"You... you’re Leon Graves," Garrison gasped out, his fingers slipping from his ruined weapon as he realized the true scale of the horror standing in front of him. The leaderboard didn’t lie; the gap between them wasn’t a hurdle—it was a bottomless abyss. "The... the director... we just wanted to negotiate a trade treaty for the central gate core..."
"Your director doesn’t have the currency to buy my time, enforcer," Leon said, his voice flat, carrying a chilling, metallic resonance that caused the metal panels of the surrounding abandoned cars to vibrate with high-frequency tension. "And you stepped across my wire with your steel drawn."
"Wait! We have three hundred armed hunters at the docks!" Garrison shrieked, his manicured hands scraping against the rough asphalt as he tried to drag his heavy body backward out of the fifty-foot circle of absolute darkness. "If you clear our scouting team, the Crimson Fist will blast this entire complex into dust!"
"Let them try," Leon Graves murmured, his expression dead calm in the shadows. "Their iron will turn to rust before their fingers can even find the triggers."
He raised his right foot, his leather boot pulsing with a dense, violet manifestation of his advanced Strength attribute, and brought his heel straight down onto the enforcer’s chest plate with the force of an industrial hydraulic press.
CRUNCH.
The obsidian-scale armor shattered into liquid shards, and the Calamity Domain finished the work, turning the chief enforcer and his remaining archer into two massive mountains of gray sand that blew away into the Manhattan winter wind.

Leon stood alone in the quiet intersection, his duster coat slowly settling around his legs as the raw, stolen energy integrated deep into his marrow. He didn’t look back at the empty gear scattered across the road. His Perception stat had already locked onto the southern horizon, where the distant rumble of the third wave was beginning to rattle the clouds. The human syndicates were nothing more than early delivery trucks bringing him attributes, and he intended to harvest them all before the first night could find its end.
