Apocalypse Regression: I Am the SSS-Rank Nightmare

Chapter 11: The Three-Day Siege

Three days inside a dead world changed a man’s perspective on silence.

The three-block perimeter surrounding the sapphire pillar had become an eerie pocket of absolute quiet in the middle of a burning city. Outside the reinforced steel gates of the apartment complex, Manhattan was a chaotic meat grinder of sirens, collapsing masonry, and the distant, wet screeches of things that shouldn’t exist. Inside, the only sound was the rhythmic, exhausting scrape-scrape of iron shovels clearing the brick courtyard.

Leon Graves sat on the top step of the central concrete lobby, his dark Cloak of the End-Game draped over his shoulders like a heavy shadow that refused to dissipate in the morning light. He was twirling a small, sharp piece of gray stone between his knuckles—a leftover fragment from his fight on the library steps.

His eyes were fixed on the two former street thugs, Miller and Davies, who were currently hauling a heavy crate of scavenged canned goods across the yard. In seventy-two hours, both men had lost all their facial fat, their skin caked in dark grime and sweat. Yet, their movements were sharp, efficient, and fueled by a very healthy, primal fear of the lone man sitting in the shade.

"Put those in the basement locker," Leon said. His voice wasn’t loud, but it cut through the crisp morning air like a cold blade, instantly making the two workers freeze. "And check the reinforced welds on the western barricade again. The system chime is going to drop soon."

"Right away, boss," Miller muttered, wiping his brow and dragging the heavy crate down the concrete stairs without a single second of hesitation.

Leon leaned his head back against the brick wall, closing his eyes to inspect his internal status. Three days of micro-managing a fortified safe zone hadn’t slowed down his personal progression. Every night, low-level stray monsters would wander near the border of his three-block sanctuary, drawn by the residual warmth of human life. Leon would slip into the pitch-black alleys alone, activate his dark circle, and harvest them for raw attributes before they could even choke out a scream.

"Status," he breathed under his breath.

He had manually dumped every single attribute point he gained from leveling up into his Agility and Mana pools. In the early weeks of a system apocalypse, survival was entirely a game of lethal positioning and absolute resource management. If a player was too slow to dodge a conceptual spell, a massive health pool didn’t mean damn thing. If a caster ran out of energy mid-fight, they simply became meat.

A sharp, violent tremor suddenly rattled the concrete beneath his leather boots, breaking his concentration.

Leon snapped his eyes open, his rings of dark violet pupils contracting. The sky above Manhattan, which had remained a dull, bruised violet for the last three days, suddenly turned a dark, oily shade of pitch-black. The atmospheric pressure dropped so fast that the windows of the apartment complex vibrated with a low, threatening hum.

Right on cue, the high-pitched, crystal-clear chime of the global system rang inside the skull of every surviving human on the continent, accompanied by a heavy stream of blood-red text unrolling across the horizon.

"Here it comes," Leon muttered, standing up and letting the heavy fabric of his duster coat fall straight around his calves. He reached into his sleeve, his fingers wrapping around the cold, textured grip of his matte-black dagger.

From the reinforced metal gates at the edge of the courtyard, a frantic, frantic pounding began to echo, breaking the heavy silence."Open the gate! Please, for the love of god, open the gate!" a man’s voice shrieked from the street outside. "They’re right behind us! There’s hundreds of them coming out of the fog!"

Leon walked down the stone steps, his footsteps completely silent as he approached the front entrance. Miller and Davies had already dropped their crates, standing near the iron bars with pale faces, their hands gripping rusted iron pipes like makeshift clubs. Through the narrow gaps in the barricade of flipped yellow taxis and concrete blocks, a panicked crowd of about twenty civilians was pressing against the iron structure, their faces twisted in absolute terror.

Behind them, less than two blocks down the wide avenue, a massive cloud of dust and debris was rolling toward the courtyard. Inside the cloud were the glowing red eyes of a Scourge Pack—a frantic mixture of Level 5 feral direwolves and armored orc scouts wielding heavy wooden bludgeons.

"Boss?" Miller turned his head, his teeth chattering as he looked at Leon’s approach. "Do we let ’em in? The outer wall won’t hold if those massive wolves hit the iron at full speed.

"The fleeing civilians saw Leon approaching from the shadows of the courtyard, his hood pulled low, his dark cloak radiating a faint, chilling pressure that felt heavier than the approaching monsters.

"Please! We saw the blue light from the highway! The system said this area is a sanctuary!" an older woman in a torn business suit cried, her bleeding fingers clawing through the iron slats. "We’ll give you whatever resources we have! Just let us across the line!"

Leon stood five feet from the gate, his expression completely swallowed by the deep shadow of his hood. In his past life—before the regression—he had been exactly where those people were standing, screaming at the locked gates of a billionaire’s private fortress, only to be left outside as live bait for the horde. He knew exactly how cold, brutal, and transactional this new world was.

But he also knew that allowing twenty untrained, screaming civilians inside his base during an active system siege was a recipe for a structural collapse. They would steal rations, hoard space, block his lines of movement, and panic at the first sight of blood.

"Miller, Davies, pull the secondary locking pins on the gate," Leon commanded, his voice dead calm.

"Sir?" Davies blinked, his hands shaking on his pipe. "You’re opening it?"

"No," Leon said, stepping right past them, his hand gripping the cold iron handle of the side pedestrian door. "I’m going out alone. You two lock the deadbolts the second the door closes behind my back. If a single monster or human touches this iron while I’m on the tarmac, I’ll turn both of you into dust before the wolves can climb the wire."

The two guards swallowed hard and immediately grabbed the locking mechanisms, their muscles straining as they prepared to seal the perimeter.

Leon stepped through the narrow side door, slipping out onto the ruined asphalt of the open avenue. The crowd of civilians fell back in shock, staring at the lone, hooded figure who had just locked himself outside with them in the face of an incoming wall of monsters.

"Are you crazy?" a young man in a shredded college sweater yelled, his face slick with sweat as he tried to grab Leon’s shoulder to force his way toward the door. "We need to get inside! Move out of the way!"

Leon didn’t answer with words. He didn’t even turn his head to look at the guy. He simply flicked his left shoulder, the heavy, reinforced fabric of his cloak whipping through the air like a solid whip. The kinetic force struck the college student’s chest with a dull thud, breaking his grip and sending him tumbling backward onto the hard concrete road.

The red-eyed direwolves had reached the crossroads, their massive claws throwing up chunks of broken pavement as they caught the fresh scent of human blood. The lead wolf, a scarred beast the size of a horse, let out a wet snarl, its leg muscles bunching as it launched its entire bulk through the air, its jaws wide enough to snap a man’s torso in half.

Leon took a single, controlled step forward, his eyes flashing with a cold, abyssal purple light beneath the rim of his dark hood.

"[Sovereign’s Domain: Wither]"

The thirty-foot circle of absolute, starlight-swallowing darkness exploded outward from his leather boots, instantly blanketing the entire width of the avenue.

The mid-air direwolf crossed the threshold of the domain.

In less than a fraction of a second, the beast’s forward momentum died out completely. Its thick gray fur rotted away into greasy, lifeless patches, the heavy muscle tissue around its front shoulders instantly shrinking as the level 2 Wither effect drained twenty percent of its biological life force. The creature hit the asphalt with a pathetic, heavy thud, sliding to a halt right at Leon’s feet like a broken sack of wet leather.

Leon didn’t waste a look. He drove his matte-black blade straight down into the back of the wolf’s neck, twisting the steel into the spine with an efficient, cold precision.

SPLAT.

The beast didn’t even have time to whimper. Its massive body instantly dissolved into a mountain of dark gray sand, and a bright, concentrated stream of blue mana rushed through the air, pouring directly back into the silver ring on Leon’s finger.

[Target destroyed. You have restored 1% of your maximum Mana.]

The twenty civilians behind the gate went completely stone-cold silent. The college student who had tried to grab Leon was still on the floor, his mouth wide open, his breath catching in his throat as he watched a level 5 apex predator turn into a pile of dirt in less than two seconds.

Leon raised his head slowly, his gaze piercing through the rolling dust cloud at the remaining thirty monsters charging down the street. The dark duster rippled around his legs as he slipped the black dagger back into his sleeve, his bare hands pulsing with a cold, necrotic mist.

"Stay behind the wire," Leon said to the crowd behind him, his voice echoing with the heavy, unyielding authority of a monarch. "And watch how a kingdom is built.

"With a single blur of motion, Leon Graves launched himself straight into the middle of the roaring horde.
