Chapter 577 - 499: Not a Single Egg Intact Under an Overturned Nest
The scattered zombies did not pose much of a shock to people; both psychologically and physically, they could still bear it. But when faced with hundreds, even several hundred zombies charging at them, the momentum was terrifying!
"Holster your guns, engage in close combat!"
Wu Baokang swung his gun behind him and swiftly grabbed a makeshift countertop from the side to use as a shield, preparing to meet the enemy.
The battle was imminent. Even if they wanted to avoid it, there was nowhere to go. Once it turned into a melee, firearms became almost useless.
"We should defend, we should be defending..."
Yuwen mumbled as he looked at the situation ahead, then shouted loudly, "Retreat to the stairwell, quickly!"
As the saying goes, holding a pass allows one to block ten thousand enemies. Facing such a fierce enemy, the primary task is to crush their momentum. Zombies strengthened to a terrifying degree; ordinary obstacles couldn't hold them back, but a narrow passageway could. No matter how many or how fierce the zombies, if they could only face three or five at a time, the crisis might be defused!
"No way, Teacher Yu, there's no way out, the back is blocked!"
Lu Yubo glanced back to see quite a few people packed in behind, along with zombies skimming along the walls attacking the crowd. The scene was chaotic.
If he ran back alone, it would be no problem, but now the front line was already engaged in battle with a massive horde, and the flanks and rear were also constrained by zombies. If he forcibly led the people behind into the stairwell, the defensive formation would be ripped apart, and there would be a risk of trampling!
Unless everyone moved in unison, but there were several different groups present, making coordination impossible. If they split up, the zombies would overwhelm them.
No retreat, only to fight to the death!
Yuwen, though not tall, could see the situation in the distance while standing among the crowd. The bright searchlights couldn't illuminate the distant entrance, but the faint scattered light allowed him to gauge the size of the zombie horde.
When that dark mass loomed before his eyes, he shrank back into the crowd and hurriedly pulled out his walkie-talkie from his pocket. He knew very well that the crisis at Lego Mall was beyond what they could handle. A mistake could lead to total annihilation!
Thud, clatter...
But just as Yuwen pulled out his walkie-talkie from his pouch, someone bumped into him. He lost his grip, and it dropped to the ground, only to be kicked away by someone else in the chaos.
"The walkie-talkie! Damn it, does anyone else have a walkie-talkie?"
Yuwen felt a chill in his heart, like the last straw of salvation had blown away.
Heard Yuwen's cry, Liu Tianji and a few others looked at each other. In the rush to come downstairs to kill zombies, they just grabbed their weapons, forgetting their bags upstairs.
"We didn't bring any..."
"I didn't bring one either..."
Thankfully, the team members' tacit understanding made up for their oversight. From the fourth floor, Tan Huajun, who was doing some sniper shots, saw a large group of zombies pour into the mall. She immediately stopped shooting, took out a walkie-talkie from her pocket, and pressed the talk button: "Brother Su, Brother Su, Lego Mall is under zombie attack, the situation is urgent, repeat..."
After the message was sent, Tan Huajun set the walkie-talkie aside and resumed her firing, each zombie she took down gave her companions a better chance at survival and brought them a step closer to resolving the crisis!
"We can't rely on Brother Su for everything. Protect Teacher Yu; I'll go kill zombies! They can't hold out any longer!"
Lu Yubo felt the heat of his blood coursing through him. He knew he shouldn't retreat into the crowd but charge into the outer perimeter. He slapped Liu Tianji and Jia Shiqin on the shoulders, grabbed a grain sampler, and charged forward with a roar.
Roar!
"Damn you!"
"Hack you to death, hack you to death!"
The zombie howls and the fighters' angry shouts intertwined. Fortunately, the front-line fighters were highly disciplined and managed to withstand the first wave of impact. Although they were in danger, no one suffered fatal injuries.
In the initial encounter, about a dozen zombies were hacked down, typically allowing a brief respite since the zombies coming up from behind would be blocked by the corpses. But things were different today; there was no pause between the first and second waves...
The zombies behind leaped over the dead bodies of their comrades, their ghastly faces looming in mid-air as their fearsome eyes peered down unexpectedly, a scene no one had anticipated.
Bang!
Having grown accustomed to horizontal combat with zombies, facing the high-jumping zombies caught them off guard, and four or five fighters were knocked down on the spot.
"Ah, save me, damn it!"
Zhang Xin was on the ground, throwing wild punches and kicks. Just as he was getting his bearings, someone grabbed him by the back of his neck and yanked him up, narrowly saving his life. Turning to see, it was Lu Yubo.
"Ah... help me."
"Get off, urgh, ah..."
Unfortunately, not all the fighters who fell were as lucky as Zhang Xin!
After being knocked down, two people had no time to act before zombies "kissed" their faces. Even though someone next to them fought with all their might, it was useless. The rabid zombies were relentless; even in death, a bite was a gain!
"Watch out, damn it!"
Lu Yubo took a deep breath, tossing Zhang Xin to the side and charging forward again. Every second of rest for him added pressure on others, and as the fighting force at the moment, he had no time to pause.
