Chapter 1621 - 908
It wasn’t just Ju Tianrui—everyone who had just helped sawed down the trees and carried the corpses over was just as furious.
After all, they were all men who’d come out of the army. Even though they’d now joined the Big Camphor Tree Base, facing something like this was still a bit beyond what they could accept.
In the Doomsday, humanity really has been ground into the dirt.
But that doesn’t mean those fraudsters can just cross the border, kidnap people over here, and do something like this to them.
Ju Tianrui’s face was dark as he walked to Li Yu’s RV, then climbed aboard.
"Director Li, all those corpses are our own people. You can go down and take a look yourself."
On hearing that, Li Yu’s brows drew tight together. Without a word, he got out of the RV.
He slowly walked to those few corpses. After squatting down and examining them for a while, his gaze grew even colder.
He stood up and tilted his head back to look at the bodies hanging overhead.
In his heart, a vague guess began to form.
In the Doomsday, there are always all kinds of ways to fight Zombies.
And using human corpses to lure Zombies is one such method.
On this stretch of highway, with this many corpses hanging up, it’s very likely they were meant to draw Zombies here, to protect the base.
Only, this method was too fucking deranged—Li Yu had never seen it before.
He’d seen his share of horrors, but this was the first time he’d ever witnessed a scene like this.
After checking the corpses, he realized every single one of them had been hanged alive—in other words, they were still alive before they were strung up in the trees.
"Who the hell is this twisted, doing shit like this?!" Li Tie ground his teeth in hatred, rage burning in his eyes.
Li Yu checked the time, then asked Li Tie, "How far is it from here to that Yue Country Fraud Group?"
Li Tie looked at the map and said, "Should be less than forty kilometers. Also, Third Uncle just sent word—they’ve found the place. He says if we keep straight along this road, we’ll get there."
Forty kilometers.
In that case...
A glint of thought flashed in Li Yu’s eyes. This matter should have a great chance of being connected to the people in that Yue Country Fraudster Park.
Thinking that, Li Yu said, "Keep moving. We’ll go link up with Third Uncle’s team."
Ju Tianrui glanced at the corpses on the ground and let out a sigh.
Time was tight, so they could only lay the bodies down by the roadside, then cover them with some dirt.
"Wait." Li Yu looked at the corpses hanging in the trees, suddenly stopped in his tracks, and spoke to Ju Tianrui.
"Light it up. Burn this whole mountainside, as fast as you can—it’s getting late." Li Yu said.
There wasn’t much he could do. Setting it all ablaze was at least a way to let the dead rest.
"But if we do that, won’t it draw the attention of those fraudsters forty kilometers away?" Li Tie asked when he heard Li Yu’s order.
Li Yu waved his hand. "Two more hours and it’ll be dark. Even if they notice, there’s nothing they can do. Hurry up and burn it. Once it’s done, we link up with Third Uncle’s team."
"Got it." Li Tie nodded.
To make the burn more thorough, they took a little fuel and splashed it around the base of the trees.
It took them only a few minutes to finish splashing the fuel.
Then Li Yu climbed back into the vehicle. Looking at the dense ranks of corpses hanging behind them, he let out a sigh.
He fished a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket, along with a box of matches—the matches were manufactured by their own base.
Scratch!
Li Yu struck a match; the flame was small and weak.
He lit his cigarette.
The match still burned, so Li Yu pinched it between thumb and forefinger and flicked it toward the trees.
Whoosh!
In an instant, the match touched the gasoline at the base of the trees and ignited it.
A gust of wind swept through; the fire rode the wind and exploded into roaring flames.
Watching the blaze grow larger and larger, Li Yu finally said to the others, "Let’s move out!"
It was midsummer. After a whole day of scorching sun, the forest was bone-dry. Now the flames were burning and the wind was strong; in just a moment, the entire mountainside was set alight.
Luo followed behind and lit the forest on the other side as well.
Flames roared on both flanks, crackling nonstop.
The convoy looked as if it was charging out from between two fire dragons.
Watching the burning woods recede farther and farther away, Li Yu took a drag on his cigarette, his chest tight with suffocation.
Hoo——
Kill.
Right now, he only wanted to kill whoever did this.
Thick smoke rolled up, shrouding the evening glow in a gray haze, giving the whole scene a desolate vastness.
The clouds in the sky were dyed red and purple, looking both eerie and—against reason—strangely beautiful.
.....
The forest lay silent; the setting sun cast its last rays.
Li Yu’s group drove through the dense mountain woods, smoke billowing behind them.
They drove for about half an hour.
Suddenly, a fork in the road appeared ahead.
This fork was a dirt track.
Ju Tianrui hurriedly had the vehicles stop. According to what Li Yu had just passed on, Captain and the others had said their spot was reached by turning off at a fork like this.
As soon as they stopped, two figures crawled out from the brush.
It was Dapao and Ant, who had gone ahead with Third Uncle.
"Finally, you’re here. The Captain was worried you’d go past the turn, so he had us wait here for you," Ant said to Ju Tianrui as he walked up.
Ju Tianrui was in a foul mood. He gave a brief nod, then picked up the radio to inform Li Yu that they’d met up with Dapao and Ant.
After that, Dapao and Ant boarded the IFV and headed down the fork.
Though the fork was a dirt road, the weather had been dry recently, so the missile trucks and other vehicles could drive through without getting bogged down.
Once Dapao was in the vehicle, he noticed how grim everyone looked, and asked curiously, "What’s up with you guys? Why are all your faces hanging down—what happened?"
