Chapter 149: Officially Duchess. Technically Still Pending.

The ring lay warm in Mirabelle’s palm.

For a moment, she simply stared down at it.

Then her fingers slowly closed around the heavy gold. Tightly.

Far tighter than necessary, as though there were somehow a chance she might lose it if she loosened her grip even slightly.

Her mother leaned closer.

"I’m proud of you," she whispered, so quietly that the words were meant for Mirabelle alone.

Mirabelle’s throat tightened.

Before she could answer —

DING!

A familiar sound chimed inside her head.

Blue light flickered at the edge of her vision.

And directly between Mirabelle and her mother, a translucent system window unfolded in the air.

Awaiting recognition by the Territory Core...]

As if she could have forgotten about the Territory Core...

Mirabelle had no idea why Pebbles, or rather the system, had felt the need to remind her of that particular detail now. She dismissed the window with a thought.

Her mother, meanwhile, had already turned away from her. The Duchess stepped toward the edge of the platform and spread her arms wide.

"Let the celebrations begin!"

The reaction was immediate.

The hall erupted.

Hundreds of voices rose at once, blending into one enormous wave of sound that rolled between the columns and climbed toward the high ceiling.

Mirabelle’s ears flattened instinctively.

Applause joined the noise. Feet moved against stone. Laughter broke out somewhere behind her, then somewhere else, until the solemn silence of only moments before had completely disappeared.

And Mirabelle... just stood there.

The signet ring was still enclosed tightly within her hand. She could feel its edges pressing into her palm.

Around her, the ceremony dissolved into celebration, but her thoughts had already moved ahead.

Toward the forest.

Toward the Territory Core.

Toward something ancient that apparently had the final say in whether any of what had just happened actually counted.

Slowly, the hall began to empty.

The gathered Beastmen and Beastwomen streamed toward the exits between the enormous columns, their voices following them as they went. The dense crowd gradually thinned, revealing more and more of the golden carpet beneath their feet.

Mirabelle remained where she was.

Then a familiar hand settled firmly on her shoulder.

She turned. Her grandmother stood beside her. The older lynx female gave her shoulder a brief squeeze before looking toward the rapidly emptying hall.

Mirabelle’s mother stepped up to them a moment later.

"Come with me."

_____

Mirabelle stood at the edge of the forest.

Before her lay the familiar path leading toward the temple, disappearing beneath the ancient trees whose branches formed a dense green canopy overhead.

Beside her stood her mother and grandmother.

Somewhere behind them, Steinstein was celebrating.

Music drifted toward them on the warm summer air, faint but unmistakable. Every now and then, laughter carried all the way from the city, rising above the distant rhythm of instruments before fading again.

The breeze carried the distant scents toward her in faint waves.

Roasted meat, warm bread, something glazed with honey.

For a moment, her stomach responded with an embarrassingly hopeful little growl.

Beneath it all, however, lingered the cooler scent of the forest. Damp soil and moss, untouched by smoke or cooking fires.

The contrast was strangely fitting.

Celebration behind her.

Something ancient waiting ahead.

Her fingers curled unconsciously. The heavy signet ring sat on her little finger now. And she could feel it constantly.

It almost seemed to burn against her skin.

Not painfully.

Just... Present.

Heavy and warm and unfamiliar, as though the gold itself refused to let her forget what she now carried.

Her mother looked toward the forest.

"Follow the path to the Territory Core."

Mirabelle stared at her.

Then at the path.

Then back at her mother.

"What path?"

Her grandmother’s mouth twitched.

"That one."

"That’s the path to the temple." Mirabelle pointed toward it. "I’ve walked it dozens of times. There isn’t another path."

No fork.

No hidden turn.

Nothing that had ever suggested there was some ancient magical Territory Core hiding somewhere deeper within Luchsenstein.

Her grandmother’s gaze dropped toward Mirabelle’s hand.

"Before today, you weren’t wearing that."

Mirabelle followed her gaze.

The ring.

"With Luchsenstein’s seal upon your hand, you’ll find the way."

Mirabelle frowned.

That was precisely the sort of cryptic statement she’d begun to deeply distrust since arriving in this world.

Her mother stepped closer.

"Kaelith and Lucien will follow you."

Mirabelle glanced over her shoulder.

Both males were waiting several steps away.

Unlike her, they were dressed normally, while Mirabelle had been instructed to remove her shoes and change out of the ceremonial clothing she’d worn earlier.

Now she wore nothing but a simple green garment that fell loosely around her body.

No jewelry.

No shoes.

Nothing except the signet ring.

She rubbed her thumb over its surface without thinking. The gold had already absorbed the warmth of her skin, yet the engraved seal felt strangely cool beneath her fingertip.

Its weight was unfamiliar. Every small movement of her hand reminded her that it was there.

"They’ll remain some distance behind you," her mother continued. "But they will follow."

"Why some distance?"

"Because this path is yours." Miranda looked back toward the forest. "And eventually, they’ll reach a point beyond which they cannot follow."

Her ears immediately twitched.

Her mother must have noticed.

"Don’t worry." She placed a hand against Mirabelle’s arm. "You are safe where you’re going."

Somehow, being explicitly told she was safe made the entire thing feel considerably more ominous.

Mirabelle looked between her mother and grandmother. Neither appeared worried.

Her grandmother actually looked almost amused by her suspicion.

’Alright.’

Mystical forest path.

Ancient Territory Core.

Blood offering.

Mates who would eventually be magically prevented from following her.

Perfectly normal Duchess activities.

Mirabelle exhaled.

Then she stepped forward.

Her bare foot met the forest floor. Cool earth against her sole. A tiny pebble pressed into the skin beneath her heel, followed by the soft tickle of grass against her ankle.

Mirabelle curled her toes instinctively.

She couldn’t remember the last time she’d walked barefoot through a forest. Without shoes separating her from the ground, every step felt strangely intimate.

She noticed every change beneath her feet: packed earth, brittle leaves, springy moss, the occasional root polished smooth by countless years of rain.

Another step.

The sounds of Steinstein immediately seemed a little farther away.

Then another.

Shade swallowed her as she passed beneath the first enormous branches. The temperature dropped pleasantly against her skin.

Dry soil gave way to softer ground beneath her feet, scattered with leaves, moss, and tiny roots that pressed against her soles as she walked.

The forest smelled alive.

Damp earth.

Bark.

Green leaves warmed by summer.

Something faintly sweet flowering somewhere beyond her sight.

Mirabelle breathed it in.

Behind her, Kaelith and Lucien followed.

And the moment Mirabelle passed fully beneath the ancient trees...

Something changed.

Kaelith slowed.

Lucien did too.

Mirabelle was still there. They could feel her through their mate bonds. Yet their eyes suddenly struggled to hold on to her.

Green seemed to gather around her.

The color of her simple dress blended with leaves and moss. Shadows shifted across her body where sunlight filtered through the canopy. One moment the outline of her shoulder was perfectly clear, and the next it seemed to disappear against the trunk of a tree behind her.

It wasn’t invisibility.

It was stranger than that.

The forest simply seemed to accept her into itself.

As though their eyes had suddenly forgotten how to distinguish Mirabelle from everything growing around her.

Even the sounds she made seemed to change.

Kaelith could hear the quiet rustle of leaves beneath her bare feet, yet somehow struggled to determine exactly where it came from. Her scent remained unmistakable through the bond, warm and familiar, but the forest layered itself over it with damp bark, moss, crushed greenery, and summer earth.

Lucien’s ears twitched.

He could feel her.

Smell her. Hear her. And still his eyes kept losing her.

Neither male liked that in the slightest.

Through the mate bonds, a brief pulse of surprise reached her.

Mirabelle stopped.

She turned around. Kaelith and Lucien were still there. She could see them perfectly well.

Both stood several meters behind her on the path.

Kaelith’s brow was furrowed.

Lucien was staring at her with an expression she couldn’t quite interpret.

Mirabelle raised her eyebrows.

They continued walking. So she shrugged and turned around again. Whatever that had been, apparently it wasn’t important.

At least not yet.

She continued deeper into the forest.

For now, the path beneath her feet remained exactly the one she knew.

The same path she had walked countless times before.

The path to the temple.
