Chapter 14 - 13: The Unyielding Blade
The Lecture Hall of the Third-Year Command Division sat at the highest point of the Northern Spire. Constructed from dark basalt and reinforced with heavy ironwood, the amphitheater was designed for strategy, grand arcana theory, and high-tier military tactics.
Tangled deep within the heavy silk sheets of the master bed just hours ago, Lyra and Aria had lay fast asleep in the quiet afterglow of a long, possessive night. Sitting on the edge of the mattress, I had summoned my dark-violet status panel to review my progress before looking back on how I arrived here.
I hadn’t always been Victor Vance. Reincarnated into a novel’s world as an arrogant, doomed antagonist destined to be crushed by the Church’s golden hero, Lucas von Radiant, I refused to play the sacrificial lamb. I used my knowledge of future events to build my strength, yet "fate" constantly tried to drag me down. When I scored top marks in my first year, Archbishop Varos poisoned my core with a mana-binding parasite and framed my decline as dark corruption. For two agonizing years my entire first and second years I survived with a shattered core through cold intellect and shadow operations, watching Lucas steal my spotlight. It was only at the end of my second year that my broken core finally consumed the parasite’s energy, awakening the Dark Sovereign System and forging my [True Sovereign Core].
Now, as I walked down the central aisle toward the upper tiers of the Northern Spire lecture hall, the heavy chatter among the senior students died down to a strained, uneasy silence.
Whispers rippled through the rows of high-ranking noble scions and veteran mages:
"Is that... Victor Vance?"
"I thought his core was shattered after the southern expedition... How is he standing here?"
"Look at his eyes... His mana isn’t broken at all. It feels like... a suffocating lead weight."
I ignored them, taking a seat near the back row and resting my arm casually over the back of the leather bench. I opened my system panel in the corner of my vision, letting the dark-violet interface overlay the room.
[ FATE-SHATTERING PERCEPTION - ACTIVE SCAN ]
[Location: Northern Spire - Command Division]
[Key Narrative Anomaly Detected]
[Target:Seraphina von Eisenwald (3rd Year - Senior Student Instructor & Chief Marshal)]
[Original Destiny: The Hero’s Ultimate Sword. Destined to instruct Lucas von Radiant in divine swordsmanship and lead the Imperial Vanguard against the "Dark Sovereign."]
[Current Narrative Vulnerability:High]. Her family’s noble house is being covertly coerced by Archbishop Varos.
My gaze drifted down toward the front of the hall, where a single figure stood apart from the rest of the third-year cliques.
Lady Seraphina von Eisenwald.
At twenty years old, she was a third-year prodigy, but her martial perfection was so absolute that the Academy Senate had appointed her as a Senior Student Instructor and Chief Marshal of Campus Security. She wore the pristine, silver-trimmed white uniform of the Disciplinary Corps over a tailored dark tunic. Her brilliant scarlet hair was pulled back into a sharp, flawless braid, and a longsword forged from dark meteorite steel hung at her hip. She exuded an air of unyielding, absolute discipline a living embodiment of martial law.
In the original web novel, Seraphina was an untouchable paragon. Her family, House Eisenwald, controlled the Imperial Forges and commanded the northern border legions. She was designed to be Lucas’s unyielding guardian, the sword that cleared his path.
Except her rigid honor is her greatest weakness, I thought, a cold, calculating smile touching my lips. And Varos knows it.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed from the elevated podium as the Senior Faculty Advisor, Commander Vane, stepped into the hall. He slammed a heavy leather-bound ledger onto the desk, his sharp eyes sweeping over the assembled third-years.
"Silence," Vane barked, his voice carrying the rough, gravelly edge of a veteran commander. "Welcome back to the Third-Year Command Division. The summer break is over. As upperclassmen, you are no longer here to merely learn how to throw fireballs or swing swords. You are here to command."
Vane leaned over his desk, his gaze locking onto mine for a brief, tense second before shifting toward Seraphina.
"To ensure order during the upcoming Open Rank Tournament, the Academy Senate has appointed Senior Student Instructor Seraphina as Chief Marshal of Campus Security and Assistant Combat Evaluator for the second-year cohorts. Her authority on disciplinary and tactical matters is absolute. Any student regardless of noble standing, family lineage, or past reputation who disrupts the peace will answer to her steel."
A low murmur of approval spread among the noble scions. Seraphina did not bow or acknowledge the praise; she simply stood with her hands folded behind her back, her sharp, hazel eyes fixed straight ahead.
"Class dismissed for practical assessment preparation," Vane announced. "Report to your tactical squads."
As the students began filing out of the grand hall, I remained seated, calmly waiting for the crowd to thin.
Seraphina turned to leave, her long cloak sweeping behind her, when her hazel eyes met mine across the empty rows of benches. She paused, her brow furrowing slightly. The sheer pressure of my [True Sovereign] aura, though carefully suppressed, was something a master swordswoman of her caliber couldn’t completely ignore.
She adjusted the scabbard at her waist and turned, walking up the steps toward my row. Her boots struck the basalt floor with rhythmic, precise clicks.
"Lord Victor," Seraphina spoke, her voice clear, smooth, and laced with an icy, professional distance. "It has been two years since you last stepped into the Northern Spire."
"Senior Instructor Seraphina," I replied smoothly, leaning back and meeting her gaze without a hint of flinching. "You look as rigid and unbending as ever. House Eisenwald must be proud."
Seraphina’s eyes narrowed slightly at the mention of her family name. "There were rumors that your mana foundation was permanently severed by dark corruption during your second year. Yet standing before you now... your core feels neither broken nor corrupt. It feels... heavy."
"Rumors in this academy are spun by people who profit from lies," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying a subtle, magnetic resonance that made the air between us tighten. "You, of all people, should know how easily the truth is manipulated by those wearing holy robes."
A subtle, nearly imperceptible flinch passed through Seraphina’s shoulders. It lasted for less than a fraction of a second, but my system’s analytical perception caught it instantly.
[ TARGET ANOMALY CONFIRMED ]
[Emotional State:Suppressed Distress / Internal Conflict]
[System Insight:Target’s younger sister, Elora von Eisenwald, was quietly moved to the Church’s Sanctuary Precinct three weeks ago under the guise of "mana purification." Seraphina believes her sister is being treated; in reality, she is a hostage to keep House Eisenwald’s military power obedient to Archbishop Varos.]
"Watch your tongue, Lord Victor," Seraphina warned, her tone sharpening into an official reprimand, though her knuckles turned slightly pale against the hilt of her sword. "Slandering the Grand Church within academy grounds is a violation of Imperial code. As Chief Marshal, I am obligated to enforce the law."
"Is it law, Seraphina?" I stood up slowly, closing the physical distance between us until I was looking down at her. The dark, intoxicating pressure of my aura expanded slightly, wrapping around her like an invisible, suffocating cloak. "Or is it just a leash? You stand here acting as the iron blade of justice, while the Church holds the chain wrapped tightly around your neck."
Seraphina’s breath caught in her throat. Her hand instinctively tightened on the hilt of her meteorite blade, her hazel eyes flashing with a sudden, dangerous intensity. "You know nothing of my affairs."
"I know that a sword without a true master is just a tool waiting to be shattered," I whispered, leaning in closer so my breath brushed against the shell of her ear. "You think you’re protecting your house by remaining obedient, Seraphina. But when the time comes, Archbishop Varos will discard your family the moment you cease to be useful. Just as he tried to do to me."
She stepped back sharply, her boots clicking against the stone, her chest heaving slightly as she stared at me with a mix of shock, anger, and hidden dread. "If you attempt to incite rebellion or break academy regulations, Victor... I will draw my blade against you. Regardless of what power you think you’ve regained."
I chuckled softly, a smooth, dark sound that echoed through the empty hall as I straightened my coat.
"I look forward to seeing you try, Instructor," I said, walking past her toward the exit. "When your holy blindfold finally tears open, remember where to find me. Sovereign Residence Nine is always open to those seeking the truth."
Seraphina remained standing in the middle of the empty amphitheater, her hand still gripping her sword hilt, her hazel eyes locked onto my departing back.
The first crack in the Hero’s Ultimate Sword had just been formed..
