Chapter 130. The Hunt in the mountain range
Aiden went through a different route.
He rounded a mountain and calibrated back towards the central path.
"According to the map, I should be arriving at the Ashen Wastelands after passing through this mountain range," Aiden thought.
As he moved through the mountain range, he scanned across the place.
Eventually, he came across another group of assassins again.
Aiden listened to their conversation.
"Boss, what do we do?"
"We kill anyone on sight, whether it’s him or not. We cannot afford to be careless. Aiden Vhorn is not stupid. Face altering creams are very expensive. But I won’t be surprised if he managed to secure some for himself."
"As expected of the boss. You are very wise."
"Stop trying to lick my feet. You are still getting a tiny cut of the bounty in case we kill him."
Aiden realised he had miscalculated. Just because he had a different appearance now did not mean that every assassin would be stupid enough to let any stranger passing through the mountain range pass freely because they don’t have Aiden Vhorn’s face.
Some would be willing to be extremely careful and smart, just like the group whose conversation he had just listened to.
"I need to ensure that I don’t let rank 3 assassins discover me at all," Aiden thought. "I should buy rank 3 poisons for my next mission," Aiden made a mental note. He was currently struggling because he had underestimated the enemy even with how careful he had been. He would not let something like this happen again.
"Those guys are legendary rank 2 assassins so handling them won’t be a problem."
Several blobs of blood appeared before Aiden and transformed into crimson conical arrows.
The conical arrows drilled through the air with unnatural speed. They created whipping sounds as they broke through the air.
The assassins did not even know how they died.
Never would they have thought that someone several several kilometers from their current location could see them and kill them.
The conical arrows drilled through the back of their heads simultaneously. The arrows appeared on their forehead, after crushing through their brains and their skulls, leaving gaping holes that went all the way to the back of their heads.
Dull thuds resounded as their dead bodies fell on the ground.
The conical arrows turned into blobs of blood and returned into Aiden.
Aiden moved forward. When he was in a three kilometer range from where their dead bodies were, he absorbed their blood essence. After that, he tapped on his storage bracelet and equipped it. Their corpses disappeared into it. He didn’t want to leave behind any trails that pointed to him.
He was swift, covert, and efficient.
He made sure to utilize covert routes that helped him escape from beginner rank 3 assassins.
When he came across legendary rank 2 assassins, he would covertly kill them, absorb their blood essence, and store their corpses in his storage bracelet to avoid leaving any traces behind.
Very soon, the group of assassins lurking in the mountain range contacted some of their colleagues in the mountain range.
Their signals were down.
Was some chaotic beast slaughtering them?
Or was the target hunting them down?
Some of them knew the locations where some of their colleagues were hiding. They visited those locations. But they found nothing. No corpses, no trails of blood.
They were confused. Could it be that their colleagues had abandoned the mission?
That was the only logical conclusion they could come to.
If a man or beast had killed them and had even taken their corpses away with them, there would have been at least trails of blood left behind for them to follow.
But this time, nothing was left behind.
But why were their signals off?
Somewhere in the mountain range, a group of beginner rank 3 assassins were having a meeting.
"I don’t think they abandoned the mission," one of them said. "Even if they have abandoned the mission, they won’t turn their signals off."
"Someone is meticulously targeting the rank 2 assassins," another nodded. "The person is killing them covertly and getting rid of their corpses. They are being so surgical and clinical that if you don’t access the situation well, you’ll draw a conclusion that they abandoned the mission."
"Indeed," someone added. "I think it’s Aiden Vhorn."
Everyone nodded. He was the most likely person to pull something as crazy as this off. Hundreds of assassins were lurking across the mountain range to hunt him. Yet, he was hunting some of them with such clinical efficiency.
No wonder the bounty on his head was so high. He was a very troublesome person to deal with.
"If it’s him, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we are not coming across him after searching all across the mountain range."
"That’s true. He’s known to have extremely high scouting abilities. He may have seen us from afar, and navigated a different route before we even got the chance to see him!"
"That’s terrifying. This fellow has been playing us all this time. Shit!"
"Relax. I have a solution. The only location ahead of this mountain range is the Ashen Wastelands. That’s most likely where he’s headed!"
"Are you crazy! The Ashen Wasteland is a dead zone. Do you want us to go there and get ourselves killed?"
"Yeah. What the fuck are you talking about?"
"Look. Just because the bounty on Aiden Vhorn’s head is large does not mean we should let greed cloud our judgement. I’m out of here!"
"Yeah me too. I’m leaving. Another opportunity will present itself for us to kill him!"
"Wait. You guys should hear me out. No risk no reward okay?"
Contemplative glints flashed through the eyes of the group of assassins.
The fellow who came up with the crazy idea to enter the Ashen Wasteland realized he had earned their ear. He continued, "We will just have to be extremely careful. Military operatives are sent there all the time and some of them manage to return. What’s the possibility that we can’t make it back? We only need to search for him and kill him. After that, we will leave. This is a large bounty. It’s not an opportunity we can pass up."
Everyone sighed.
"Alright. We will listen to you this time because what you are saying makes a lot of sense."
"Alright let’s move."
The group of beginner rank 3 assassins turned into streaks of silhouettes and bolted across the mountain range.
